So that’s a full fat 5.0 Range Rover? Never been in one, but think they look fab.

Much as these days my view of full-fat RR has been coloured by the innumerable black ones charging around this part of London driven by horrible-looking people, I have to admit that they are nice things. My father had three of them in succession as company cars when we were kids and we always loved going in them. Not exaggerating too much to say that they turned car journeys into adventures. They do feel rather rather special on the move, a different sort of special to the 750 Simon - I thought a fast SUV would make having an SUV feel more acceptable, but as I've said, now I've tried one I really don't see the point. After spending a fortune on lessons, he took his test and didn't pass, not by much so he should have booked it quickly again. He didn't, left it 6 months as it was all about his girlfriend then CV19 came. I even offered to buy him a car (it will save me money and more importantly, time) but he still wasn't all that bothered so I eventually told him he'll have to pay for any lessons required to get him ready for his next test. There are other things he'd rather spend his money on and I'm not backing down! Chris - Not the case at all. It's not because we've got a baby, he is just the tipping point. Gary - Full Fat yes, but it's a diesel, a V8 one though and does suit the car really well.

I think it all started when some friends of my parents got a shitty old RR and they always referred to it as the Range Rover.
"Oh, Dougie, I left my handbag in the Range Rover. You couldn't pop out and get it for me, could you?"
Anyone less up themselves would just say car. Tossers!

I've been too busy this afternoon to notice this thread. Well done Martin, I am sure you will really enjoy the RR and the TDV8 is a wonderfully powerful unit.
My initial thought was to buy the boys rail tickets (at 6ft tall they can look after themselves) and then buy them a car(s). You are just at that stage where they won't want to come and see you as often, as girls, friends and parties start to become more important.

I think it's a lovely colour / wheel / trim combination. Both black and white were definitely out, Corris grey was my favourite when searching, but the Vogue SE was that colour with silver wheels and it didn't look as good. I also liked the idea of silver but they've all got the black pack and black wheels and Carpathian grey is nice, but also quite rare. There is more choice if you're looking for the V6 diesel, but I wanted the bigger engine and the anti roll system.
The interior is all black, which I prefer to the Ivory, I think Vintage Tan would suit it very well but nobody seems to spec that. It's not too dark inside thanks to the full length panoramic roof. It's got wood trim, the upgraded Black Burr Ash, which is nice as they either have the light wood which I really don't like or Grand Black which I do but is the same as is in the BMW.

Great Choice
Somehow a GLE , X7 etc just doesn’t Compete with a proper Range Rover
Interested to hear more on this v8 diesel engine

Totally unexpected thread ending revelation........
I was going to suggest one as an option, but didn't thinking you would dismiss it for reasons of plumpditude and " reputation "
The lion V8 diesel is a lovely old thing - it hasn't got the power and torque of the Audi/Porsche unit, but the refinement and sound quality are excellent and the frugality is impressive given the age of the design and the leather lined tower block it has to push.
Does the one you are buying have an OE/OY/OW/OV reg prefix ?

You’re embarrassing us slower moving forum members! I’ve not managed a test drive and you’ve already done a deal!! I think that’s a superb choice and one I feel a little bit envious of.

Does the one you are buying have an OE/OY/OW/OV reg prefix ? I knew people would be surprised, so was I. I've always really liked them, but have been nervous about their reputation, but we'll see how that goes and the Golf will be my commuting car. It's an OE reg, so a JLR car. I've done some great man maths on it. One of the benefits of getting a LR is the all season tyres, which means I wouldn't need to get a set of winter wheels and tyres. That would be £3-4k on an X5 or a Cayenne, even buying lightly used ones from Germany. Put that into the budget, great. One of the slight issues with them is despite them going down on their knees to let you in and the seat even lower when you open the door to help, it was still a bit of an effort for Lindsay to get in, without rubbing the edge of the seat anyway. So I thought about side steps, but the fixed ones don't look great and are expensive if you go for the genuine ones (list £1,259, they would do them for £1,000). The deployable ones are even more expensive, just over £3,300, but they would give me a similar discount. I decided that £3k is about what I'd have to pay for a set of winter wheels for another car, so it wasn't too bad and have ordered them......

Yes, nice wheels.
What is that colour called? I assume it hasn't been hand-applied by Bavarian monks using special tail-feathers from an endangered Madagascan tree-duck like your 750?

It’s Byron blue. No stressing this time, it’s one of the standard no extra cost metallics. I really like the wheels too, there is another style I like as much, but these will be easier to clean so I’m happy

Their mum cant wait for them to visit, there’s no chance of them not coming even if they didn’t want to, which thankfully they still do and even more now they’re a little brother. The train doesn’t really work as they have to go into London and change station, it take a lot longer than in the car.

Well that escalated quickly, wouldn't have expected you to go for a RR but given that you were inevitably going to be looking at an SUV the offerings from BMW/Merc/Audi/Porsche were never going to offer you any more room than you already enjoy in the 7 and were unlikely to be as nice to drive either. The full fat RR is designed to be more of a luxo-barge because those who want a sportier version can go for the Sport or Velar.
I understand the reservations regarding reliability and I know that older ones are notorious money pits, but this one will be under warranty so that at least gives some peace of mind. I like the colour, most I've seen are black or dark blue which makes them look like they belong to a drug dealer or an embassy!

Agree with all of that Alex.
It’s under the manufacturer warranty for a while yet and the extended warranty isn’t much more than half the cost of what I was quoted for the BMW.

Somehow a GLE , X7 etc just doesn’t Compete with a proper Range Rover Basically, from a 7 series, a full fat RR was the only way to go. And it all happened in a few hours whole I was away. Great choice and I'm sure you'll love it. Such that in a few years you're only decision will be to decide what colour and spec to order your next one in. As once you've had a full fat RR, nothing else automotively feels quite the same. It's that combination of imperiousness, class and innate style (in the right colour / spec combo) that the Germans can just never achieve.

I have to say that looks pretty bloody good, imho of course. Not a type three but that would not suit, Sir.

If you had been around, I know what you would have suggested! Sorry about the tinted windows but it’s near impossible to fine one without and they’re needed for the little one anyway. If it had clear glass then I would have had to buy fitted blinds which look the same from the outside. . At least the wheels are silver!

I'm in no position to complain about tinted windows any more as I ended up with them on the MINI. And the silver wheels and what looks like a real non-drug-dealer spec redeems them anyway.

I think it was me and nick sat in the back of a RR LWB at the Geneva show a few years ago and we both said something along the lines of ‘yeah, this is the bollocks’
