The RWD R is such a handful because of the immense amount of torque that was being shovelled to the rear wheels at low rpm (those early cars were 502lbs ft from 2500 rpm to 5000 rpm).
My P450 “only” has 428 lbs ft, but the AWD makes a big difference because even on soaked country roads at 2 degrees centigrade, I can give it the berries through 2nd and 3rd.

I think you need to fiddle round with your new car budget and get your missus an old banger for her daily and a GR Yaris for your weekend car! They do look great for the money they're asking given that a regular Golf GTI or Focus ST will cost the some or probably more and not be anywhere near as fun. I think the reasonably limited production numbers will make it a much better investment longer term too.

I'd much rather be GTS 4.0 twins!
I think it's great that the GR Yaris exists, but my initial enthusiasm for it has pretty much gone. I'd love to borrow one for a week, but I can't see how it would fit into my life or be any better for the type of driving I do than what I have already and if I was going to get a fun weekend car for £30-£40k, it would be a Boxster.

Mine's going to be a B-road blaster, a go-anywhere in all weathers and wet trackday car. It'll get plenty of use and it can do things that my other cars cannot do very well.

Based on Harry’s review a trip to Litchfield will be a good idea then, as it didn’t appear to be great on a typical B Road and he said the modified car was a lot better.

It'll be absolutely fine as standard down a typical B road. I took it down B-roads for 20 minutes of my 30 minute test drive and I was overtaking several cars, rowing up and down the gears and grinning like a loon Seating position is a bit too high and the rear view mirror does get in the way. But the rest of the car is pretty fantastic out of the box.

Toyota could have made then lower but decided on high position because they wanted it to be as authentic a homologation special as possible. Think I heard that on Smith and Sniff.

The Litchfield dealt with bumps a bit better but that was about it

We must have been watching a different video! The grip, and the way he fired out of bends , and the giggling .. and that was the standard car ! It wasn’t that part, that did look good fun and it’s something I enjoy in the Golf, it was his comments on the way the Litchfield car ‘flowed” and dealt with bumps vs the standard car which you could see with how much movement there was in the steering wheel in a straight line. There aren’t many B roads which don’t have a lot of bumps! For what wants Dan and how he’ll use it, it sounds ideal, but it sounds like it would be even better with upgraded suspension. From what I’ve seen and read, the Golf is a much better option for me....I did 350 miles in it yesterday appreciating the comfort, voodoo cruise and decent stereo on the motorway, mixed with the way it fired out of roundabouts on the A50 which helped break up a dull journey. It can be a lot of fun on B roads as well, won’t be as good as the Yaris, but I don’t get to spend much time on them. That’s why I’m struggling to come up with something to replace it with, not that there’s any rush.

Makes sense if you commute in it as well. But if it was just a weekend toy then I think the Yaris would be top of my list.
Would you not change it for the new R ?

It would be behind a sports car as a weekend toy, but I can see the appeal and look forward to hearing how Dan gets in with it. Although he’s pretty useless when it comes to giving fleet updates! I have thought about the new R, but I’d want to drive one first. It does appear to be a step on in a number of area, but so it should be for another £10k and I wonder whether it’s different enough. I like the idea of an A45S, but have read mixed reviews on the ride in comfort mode and you can’t have adaptive suspension without the aerodynamic pack, I like the Q car look of the standard A45. It will be interesting to see what the new RS3 is like when that’s launched later this year. I was thinking about it driving home last night and even with an increase in budget, I struggled to think of anything that would be a better all rounder than the Golf.

Interesting comparison. He does say the A45 is decent in comfort mode . Yes, I watched that earlier and it seems better than I thought it would be. Also watched a Carfection (Henry Catchpole) video, he really liked it and said you can’t really compare it to hot hatches and it reminded him of a 911 Turbo. You can’t get a lightly used one for much less than £55k, which isn’t far off a brand new one, so that makes more sense. But I struggle to get my head around that being the same cost as an 18 month old M5, a ‘70’ plate facelift Guilia Quadrifoglio etc. I don’t want either as a 2nd car, but that doesn’t help the value issue, then you think you can get an almost identically specced A35 for nearly £15k less new..... I’m going to wait until things open up a bit and try one.

Interesting comparison. He does say the A45 is decent in comfort mode . I don't understand why the A45 is in this shootout given its £20k premium over the others. Surely an A35 or Golf R would have been more suitable. I can well imagine people in the market for a GR Yaris looking at a Type R, and vice versa - I would. I love the Yaris, but for me a hot hatch has to be a daily driver. The dinky proportions which help make it so brilliant on the road might scupper it on practicality grounds.

I watched it last night, hasn't dampened my enthusiasm....what a fantastic thing.
I have a real internal struggle with my new car thinking, which is most unlike me as I'm usually very decisive. There are a couple of issues, mainly around usage, but also where the compromise will sit as there is always a compromise.

Amazing car. Ridiculous that the steering wheel controls are not illuminated at night which he highlighted as being something of an oversight that does affect its general usability. It's a €3m car ffs and VW manage it on a £15k Polo.
Otherwise you just can't help but be impressed by the performance it offers even if the noise is nowhere near what you get from many supercars that are 10% the price or less.

I think it's one of those interiors that doesn't look particularly special until you experience it in real life and the quality of the materials blows you away. And for 3 million quid it bloody should do!
