Great rebuild update Mark. You lost me about half way down the page. A gearbox seems such a simple concept, but by heck that looks complicated.

Mini update. The blog will get updated when I finish this part of the build. Engine is out of the lorry chassis and on the stand. First I removed the gearbox which was a case of undoing the bellhousing bolts, gearbox mounting bolts and sliding it back. I removed the clutch from the flywheel. The pressure plate is seized. There is virtually no wear on the friction plate which figures with the low miles of about 112k. I am not able to use the lorry clutch in any case as they slip in the Land Rover application apparently. I also removed the hefty flywheel and will take that to the machine shop to get resurfaced. Most of the manifold bolts came out OK with an extractor. I need to weld a nut on four of them and one is snapped so far. Shouldn't be too much of a bother to get it out. I've ordered a new fuel and oil filter, new rocker cover with oil filler (the engine mount covers the DAF oil filler point) and a core plug set - they are very thin and I need one to plug the DAF oil fill point and relocate the dipstick - I need to turn the sump around to clear the front diff pumpkin and fit a reverse oil pickup which I bought with Reece's kit. I'm hoping I can save the crusty injector pipes as they are quite expensive. I've also ordered some traffic red VHT paint for the block and some black for the rockers, sump, exhaust manifold and injector pipes.

That reminds me of a car I hired in Malta 30 odd years ago.

The engine looks a bit like it got dredged up from Malta harbour after 30 years!

I thought it came out of a Sherman DD the Septics lost at D-Day and are still there.

That will be all painted and de rusted in no time at all and will look as good as it is going to go when it's finished.

That's one heck of a lump of an engine. Do you have to beef up the front suspension!

Yes. I've got normal 110 HD springs on the rear and 90 HD rear springs on the front to compensate for the extra 200kg or so. It's the standard go to setup on the Cummins Land Rover group.
I could have gone air ride, but that adds complexity and cost. No reason why I couldn't at some point in the future if I don't like the ride as I am running the engine compressor to assist the clutch.

When you pull up will it make that air compressor sound trucks make?

It will make a hiss when the govenor unloads the compressor, but not when I brake - I'm running normal hydraulic brakes.
I may run a spring brake chamber to operate the parking brake which will hiss when engaged as handbrake lever room is limited due to increase in tunnel size.

Exhaust manifold is off. The 4 bolts that were stripped came off by welding a nut to 3 of them. One snapped and the other that snapped needed drilling and tapping.
Ive been in touch with the 12v starter and alternator supplier and the guy who modifies the DAF PAS pump to stop it splitting the Land Rover steering box in half.
Waiting to hear from the clutch man.

Flywheel is now with Cleasbys in Durham to be machined - should be ready in a day or two. There is no lip to speak of, but someone had overheated the clutch in the past.
I've ordered and paid for the clutch which will be good for 250bhp, although I'm not seeking that much power. The kit comprises of a stronger pressure plate with greater clamping force, organic friction plate and heavy duty release bearing. I've also ordered a new spigot bearing as the one in the flywheel is noisy.
Power steering pump has gone off to Steg's 4x4 to be recalibrated for the Land Rover steering box and the starter and alternator are on back order.
Paint and engine bits have arrived, so I have plenty to be getting on with.

Now that my garage is back to normal having got rid of the Lexus parts, I managed to get some work done on the Cummins.

More done today. Rocker covers and gearbox in etch primer and the compressor and bellhousing in VHT enamel. The rocker covers are getting black VHT and the gearbox will be in satin black.

It'll be shame to put that in the chassis and then proceed to get it all dirty.

More progress over the last week. Engine starting to be built back up. I've got the fuel pump, compressor, new sump and injector pipes installed and the flywheel housing back on. I've also managed to get the transfer box mated to the ZF gearbox from the lorry. I just need some hardware and then I can mount the engine, install the flywheel and clutch and get the gearbox and transfer box installed.

Gearbox and transfer box are installed. I am just waiting on a later gearbox crossmember. The 200Tdi style that came with the chassis is too big. The later TD5 version is much lower profile and bolts straight in. I've found a galvanised new old stock one on eBay for under £50. UPS seem scared of a little snow though so it has been stuck at the depot.
Once I have that, I can install the engine and adjust and weld up the mounts.

Massive milestone today. Got the clutch in and gearbox bolted up and new clutch servo adjusted and fitted. Engine mounts tacked in place and gearbox mounts fully welded. I need to tweak the engine position slightly for clearance to the steering box and then I can fully weld those. I've ordered a disc handbrake as the drum will be too close to the floor crossmember. I need to sort some props and then I can move onto bodywork.
