Electric conversion. That'll give you torque. Just watched the Johnny Smith Car Pervert video about the electric Defender conversion for Selfridges. They start at £50k and go up to £150k. The Twisted version is £70k. Way out of my league! Dragons Den proposal?

Won't a TD5 conversation mean you just end up with a larger version of what you already have already? I'm probably missing something, but that seems like a huge amount of work for relatively little.

I’m sure 5th gear did a piece on an electric defender way back . Didn’t VBH take it off roading. She said the instant Torque was ideal

I suspect that the issue of not replying to messages is either lack of understanding of what construes good customer service or he can’t get the bits and doesn’t want to risk losing sales by admitting as much.
In your shoes I would go down the route of restoring it with a TD5 engine to as decent a standard as you can without losing the will to do so, then sell it on. By doing as much as you can yourself, the rising values of Defenders should see you make a small profit or at least wipe you face. No point keeping it as it won’t be what you wanted it to be and you’ll always be slightly resentful of it for not being all you hoped it would be. Equally selling it now as an unfinished project will only invite piss take offers.

TD5 conversion is a piece of piss compared to the Cummins conversion and 200bhp easily available. Knackered D2s are readily available, weld in new engine and gearbox mounts, a bit of wiring and plumbing and it is good to go.
Alternatively, I buy back the 200tdi engine and refit that and have a very nice 110. A 110 Station Wagon is a very different drive from a 90. I love my 90 as a workhorse and every day car, but something more practical for occasional use wouldn't go amiss. I like the idea of the grunt from a tuned TD5 and it's a lot less weight than the Cummins.
It's a moot point in any case - no bits, no project. I just want to move it forward and a TD5 conversion is an easy way of attaining what I want that isn't a Cummins.
Whether I keep it or not. I'll probably keep it and I certainly won't resent it for not having a Cummins in it! 😂 I'm not daft enough to try and sell an unfinished project either!

Massive coincidence, but I have received notification that all my bits to do the Cummins conversion are in stock.
The project is back on in its original format.

A bit of good news at least.

That's good news, hopefully they come soon and it's as straightforward to do the conversion as it was advertised as being.

Felt good to get out into the garage today and get something meaningful done on the 110. Transfer 'box partially stripped down. I'll get the rest of it stripped down tomorrow before cleaning the casings. It's missed a few oil changes over the years as it is a bit sludgy. It will be getting a rebuild kit from Ashcrofts with all new bearings. Input gear is getting replaced by the custom one to fit the DAF's ZF gearbox output shaft and the intermediate gear is getting replaced with a 1.003 as opposed to the 1.4 that's in there at the moment. This is to compensate for the low revving Cummins and short gearing of the ZF.

Final strip down and cleaning of parts today. It's a good job I did, the centre diff has had a hard time. It has been very hot at some point as it has some discolouration. The sun gear thrust washers had disintegrated totally and one of the planet gear thrust washers was mangled in the bottom of the front case. I've ordered new gears and a single 4 pin centre which is a lot stronger. All the parts I'm reusing got cleaned in a bucket of diesel along with the casings. They were really sludgy, so it has missed oil changes over the years.

Impressive home spannering there. I have done engines before, but never had a gearbox apart.

As much as this is an impressive build you're doing, I also found this E-Lander conversion equally clever

I’ll say well done but I gave no idea what those things are I’m looking at.

It looks bloody great, there is something about the process that is fascinating. I am sooooo glad I am watching it being done.

Bloody impressive work there Mark. I didn't have a clue what half you were writing meant but I admire your perseverance and ability to do it. Certainly a good way to keep busy whilst in quarantine!

As much as this is an impressive build you're doing, I also found this E-Lander conversion equally clever The Beetle in the background in the workshop has a power to weight ratio of 600hp/tonne and a sub 3s to 60. It also handles and holds the road like no Beetle has ever done. It has no boot space though!

You have made good use of your Covid isolation Mark. All the talk of pre loading, shims and end float takes me back years to my engine and gearbox building days. I envy you and the time and space you have to indulge yourself in something so satisfying.

I found it deeply therapeutic for the most part. Can't wait to get a move on with the build now.

It is amazing to see, great stuff. Not interested in doing air cooled VW's are you?

It was a proper beast of a thing, the engine was about the only thing he rescued from his 'Boss' Escort IIRC.

I did and I have some photos of it somewhere - those were the great days of Ingliston and my care free young adult days.
