Amazing. It looks like one of these warplane restorations - where they've fished it out from the bottom of a lake after 70 years and rebuild it to flying condition using as much original metal as possible. The 2nd photo in your 90 thread - of it sitting on a small ford - is fantastic. To be fair I think that would be easier!

It seems a shame to (largely) cover it up.

It's getting a couple of coats of chassis satin black.

Chassis paint is complete. I have spent the last few days removing and stripping the axles and assessing them.

I've seen it on the blog. Looks a proper professional job.

Cheers, I'm going to upgrade the spray gun for the bodywork, but the cheap one is fine for the chassis and axles.

As a layman, there's something I've always wondered about painting galvanised steel. As you have etch the galvanisation to get the paint to stick (as you've done), doesn't that mean that if the paint does get chipped off, there is less galvanisation (or at least a partially damaged and etched galvanisation) to protect the metal - i.e it is more likely to rust?

The zinc is a sacrificial coating. Over the years it will wear down in any case, leaving bare steel, but the paint slows the process.

Love your reaction to it firing up +1! It makes an interesting noise.....closer to the trucks I have at work than a LR!

That's kind of the whole idea. I haven't seen this engine run so was taking a big punt when I bought it. Turns out it is a really lovely runner with no smoke or strange noises. It's only done 180k kms so not a lot for this sort of engine.

That's a shame, you had your heart set on it. Is that chap the only one who does the kit or could you get it fabricated by someone else?

I’d stick to the Cummings plan. You were obviously inspired by the specialness of those you saw at the LR show. Surely you can fabricate the parts you’re struggling to source yourself ?

It is just a case of getting it fabricated, but my enthusiasm is waning somewhat. The cost will be lot higher than buying it off someone who has all the necessary details too and budget is pushed as it is.

That's just not possible - it requires an engineering shop to make bits and without having done it before it would be expensive. I just don't know why the guy who sells them won't answer messages yet had the cheek to try and sell me an alternator for my build. It's infuriating.

A shame. I was just wondering what was happening with this project, not having seen an update for a while. Not tempted to go down the V8 route again?

Yes, but V8 manuals are hard to find.

Electric conversion. That'll give you torque.

Electric conversion. That'll give you torque. Just watched the Johnny Smith Car Pervert video about the electric Defender conversion for Selfridges. They start at £50k and go up to £150k. The Twisted version is £70k. Way out of my league!

It might not be as exciting a project as the conversion plan, but putting a Td5 in sounds the most practical option as all the bits are readily available. Then you can concentrate on the galvanised bulkhead and all the others bits and pieces that will make it a long lasting success.
