I recently read Apache by Ed Macey which lead me to Dressed to kill by Charlotte Madison. They were both exciting and thought provoking. I read both those last year - agreed they were very good. Ed Macey also has a second book - Hellfire, released a year after the first. Yes, I might get that one too.

Went to see the new Elvis film over the weekend and found it quite enjoyable especially as someone who never really knew the story of his fame and eventual downfall. He died some years before I was even born so he's always been a bit of a myth to me.

My dad was of the Elvis-fan-Generation and I had In the Ghetto played at his funeral. Mind you when he was retired he watched some Elvis movies of an afternoon and on a subsequent visit to his house he advised me he found them so bad he was blushing in his own house. Alone. Buddy Holly is the King, by the way.

Buddy Holly is the King, by the way. I saw it a few weeks ago when I decided to go to the movies and bring the kids. Only one decided to go and I was planning to see Top Gun, but then she wanted to see Elvis and I decided to go. It’s not every day that my 17 year old wants to go anywhere with me so I said yes. I really enjoyed the movie. I haven’t seen the Top Gun movie yet either.

I never really liked him but I do like a couple of songs including Latest Flame and Crying In The Chapple. I'll watch out for the picture.
We watched "Dog" (a film) recently and liked it.

Being something of a sucker for Tolkien, I am watching the new Amazon series The Rings of Power. Just watched the third episode. Anyone else watching it?

Fancied watching a horror film at the weekend so we watched the 20th anniversary/remake/sequel edition of Halloween (you know, Mike Myers). All entirely predictable but it took me a while to realise that the sub title 'H20' was meant to mean Halloween 'Twenty' rather than Halloween 'Water'! I can only blame several G&Ts for that

Looking forward to seeing the new Tolkien also. Haven’t got anything to watch it on yet, no tv, the projector is still in a box and it’ll be a few days before I have the flooring finished to get some order in the living room to see it.
I bought the 3 LOTR books on audible a few weeks ago when they were on sale. I have it already but this series is read by Andy Serkis and sounds really good. I’m currently listening to a Nick Offerman book.

Not heard it but reckon Andy Serkis will be a brilliant story teller/reader.

I haven’t seen the Top Gun movie yet either. The new Top Gun is the biggest load of rubbishy American schmultz, but quite an enjoyable watch. Not a patch on 'Elvis' though.

We watched "The English" and thought it was ok. It was interesting for me as an amateur photographer to see that they'd used lenses with a lot of flare and focus breathing. You quite often see flare in TV and cinema but I don't remember seeing such obvious (and imo quite bad) focus breathing before. I thought at first that they'd used cheap crappy cinema lenses or perhaps just lenses designed for stills shooting as they often exhibit focus breathing but googling told me that hey had indeed used high end cinema lenses. They had fed the results through software to create a more film like look and I do wonder if that was partly responsible. Sorry to be so geeky but anyone watching The English may spot what I'm on about

Maybe the new Avatar will be worse? I thought the original looked good but the script was just awful. Unobtainium I hope to Gosh I never see it. Oh, I watched The English and made it to the end.

Diversions of the cheap cheap variety.
Waiting for my new pc which will be some time after new year now. I wanted something to pass the time while waiting for the occasional render to 'cook' as the saying goes. I found a sliding blocks thing on Steam which was a not so expensive 53p. I spotted a better version with slicker graphics on the apple store but while they say it has a pc version, they MEAN install an emulator which I thought a faff too far.
Had this a day now and it is quite addicitive. I have also acquired some additional RAM so the 'old' machine can still be used for older gaming etc. One of my resolutions was to get back into sim racing, having acquired the GTL version for more modern hardware/software
I wonder if I will actually get to do this in 2023.

Been watching the Bernie Ecclestone Autobiography on Discovery+ and found it quite an interesting look back at the history of F1 and how he made it into a commercial venture. There's a lot of anecdotes I've heard over the years that he doesn't mention suggesting maybe there's an element of hearsay about them. Equally a lot of the story's he regales us with involve those who are no longer alive to tell their side of the story. Worth watching though if you have access to it. (If you're a Vodafone customer you can get a free 6m trial via their rewards app).

Being home alone this week, I binge-watched the final series of His Dark Materials, since I missed it by being away over Christmas and given that this sort of fantasy-esque stuff is absolutely not my wife’s cup of tea whereas I am quite partial to it.
Enjoyed it, even if some of the sequences in the Land of the Dead were far too long. Visually very impressive.

Just read Konstantin Kisin's "An immigrants love letter to the west" and found it an easy read and his humour came through well. If he's right about the state of and threat to the Anglosphere and wider west I fear for the future but as I'we don't have kids I'll leave the worry to others.
One thing he does mention is not ascribing malice to things which could equally be down to stupidity or words to that effect so maybe it's not a grand plot to bring down the west but instead is just a preponderance of useful idiots with the emphasis on idiots.

Thanks. I might seek that out.
I saw him on line speaking at a Uni (Oxford maybe) and by coincidence a couple of days later someone on TV mentioned his book so I thought I'd have a look. His views on Russia made me think of my time in Kazakhstan and the positives and negatives of Soviet rule v what can come after.

Just finished "Sniper One" by Sgt Dan Mills in which a British base in Iraq is under just about constant attack. It was an easy read and as with other books of this type it includes tragedy, bravery and humour.

I’ve just watched a How to build British programme about the Mono, which has been on the Sky box for a long time. I’m sure I recognise Ian the PDI guy from somewhere….

Well we’ve been avoiding Ted Lasso for long enough and have binge watched the first season this week. Aside from horror flashbacks seeing shots of the Whitehorse Road end at Selhurst Park it’s actually brilliant and worthy of its 11 Emmys.
Lately we’ve been mainly watching Apple TV (Slow Horses, Bad Sisters, Tehran) that some other platforms are being neglected. By the adults, anyway. Kids seem to only watch streamed stuff.
