The new Leon cupra wagon looks that good I wouldn’t even consider the R It does look good but clearly their marketing department haven't sold you on the idea the Cupra is the brand now not a trim level! The interior looks a bit better than the Golf but still gets the same touch bars for the temperature and volume controls. If Skoda can put the 300bhp engine in the Octavia vRS it would be a much better proposition to the Gokf R estate.

Is the A35 not a more natural competitor to the Golf R than the A45? There is a silver A35 round my way which looks great and from what I have seen of it, goes very well indeed. The problem with the UK though is that people only want the top of the range so some very good cars tend to get overlooked. I'd take either of the Mercs over the Golf any day but at top end money the new 240i might be the best of the lot if you can do without a hatchback. Yes, the A35 is the natural competitor, it's slightly slower in a straight line but I think that's because the 8R has great initial traction and it is a bit cheaper like for like. The new 240i interests me much more than the 8R/A35/A45/M135i, but it won't have enough space in the back. It will be interesting to see what the new RS3 is like and whether they've been able to make it better to drive, but it's a shame there isn't a 6 cylinder hatchback any more as I don't like the 5 cylinder any more than the engine in our R. I know I'm pretty much on my own when it comes to my disappointment with 3 and 5 cylinder engines, but I did show Lindsay a short clip of the current RS3 accelerating, asked her what she thought and she didn't like it. So I'm not completely on my own. Have you driven one? I've driven both previous generations and thought they sounded almost indecently good. A good friend of mine, whose weekend toy is a comprehensively fettled 360 Modena, got one for his wife and really rated it. Said it was a bit of an animal and he would know since his Ferrari is quite the beast.

It had a major service, brake fluid change, Haldex service inc filter clean and MOT yesterday. £504.65 all in, which feels like decent value to me. No issues other than a chip in the windscreen which has been there for over 2.5 years (below the swept area), plenty of life left in the pads (9mm front, 7mm rear) and tyres (4mm front, 5mm rear). So £750 total servicing costs in 3 years and 28k miles and partly thanks to running winter wheels, no other costs at all. Even without the current ridiculous used value (it's worth at least 75% of what we paid), total costs have been very good and lower than expected when we bought it.

Martin have you seen the way Evo have eviscerated the new Golf R in the latest mag? The whole thing basically - engine note, enjoyment, handling, the interface and controls. Absolutely slated it in a group test vs the A45 and Civic R. It won't hurt owners of your version, with which they had an ongoing love-in... The only other review I've read on the Golf R was on Pistonheads by Dan P formally of this parish. He was saying pretty much the same thing that it was a very dull car until you gave it 10/10ths and only then did it come alive. Which 10/10ths in a new R is going to be too fast on our roads to enjoy. One thing that does seem to be very un-VW like is messing up the interior with poor controls and interface. Its an area they usually lead and quite rightly need pulling up on it. So its basically exactly the opposite of what you want in a road car then (which I suspect is partially true of others in this cohort). For sure the appeal of the XFR is the combination of decent handling but - manageably - insufficient traction.... You need a well-sighted corner exit, g-loads pinning you to the side of the cabin, and a lot of revs on to bring the rear into play on the Boxster, which I need to explore more on track.

I've just had an email through from Listers about VWs 'All In' plan, which includes 2 years extended warranty (£0 excess), 2 years breakdown cover, 2 x services and 2 x MOTs.
All that for £25.08 a month, so £602. We paid just under £400 for 1 years Warranty last year and it's just under 50% of a years warranty/breakdown for my car.
Bit too long term for me, but that's a bargain.

Good thinking by VW really. If you can't provide the new cars that people want, try and lock them into the marque until the situation improves.

Very good value.
I have just reached the end of my warranty and took a year's extended warranty with BMW which cost £800 with a £250 excess but it is all inclusive incl hire car and recovery if required. Without the excess it was over £1,100 which seems a bit daft unless they expect more than one claim a year (in which case it will be sold!)

It was in for its 4 year service and MOT yesterday, for what I thought was a fairly reasonable £391 all in including VAT.
There were five advisories on the MOT! Two were for the front tyres being down to 3mm (I thought they were c4mm), which isn’t an issue as 3mm is the point I normally change them anyway and I’m happy to treat it to a new full set and try something else. One was because Lindsay left the car seat in so they couldn’t test one of the rear seatbelts and the last two were due to some scoring in the rear brake discs. It was noted that the pads are only 50% worn and the recommendation (on the documentation and video they sent) was only to replace the discs when the pads are replaced as performance is still good?! The repaired chip on the bottom of the windscreen (below the area the wipers clear) that was mentioned last time didn’t make the list.
So, all OK really, but it does really bug me that there are advisories on the MOT test report…..
Other than that, still very happy with it as it approaches its fourth birthday and (advisories aside!) we haven’t had a single problem. I never expected to keep it this long, but am happy to extend the warranty for another year.

5 years old today, the longest we've ever kept a car by 6 months. It had an minor service and MOT last week, £211 all in, so another cheap year as I didn't end up extending the warranty last year as I thought we were bound to change it.

Assuming it was a main dealer where you took it to service they clearly don't have very good salespeople if they couldn't tempt you to even looking at a mk8 R. Not that I think it's a better car and IMO not in any way an upgrade on a mk7.

The Motorway auction has finished, it only went on at 7pm yesterday and finished at 3:30 today.
It’s due a service and MOT in 2 weeks, it’s booked into the local dealer to get that done but rightly or wrongly we decided to sell it now. It’s also had a chip on the windscreen which has been there for 5 years but it’s really low down below the level of the dashboard meaning you can see it, so we were waiting for another one before replacing the screen. When we listed it; they reduced the estimated sale price from £18,279 to £17,970 because of the screen and how close it was to needing a service/MOT.
As the service/mot/screen excess would have been over £300 that seemed fair. As that was based on a more standard car (they pick up leather and upgraded sound system only), I was hopefully it would get up to around £18,500.
I was wrong, it sold for £19,690 to a dealer in High Wycombe!
If I add on what we’ve saved not getting the service done, that’s a total depreciation of £14.4k over 71 months or £204 a month. Will have a look at the other costs at some point, but that’s not a lot at all. It hasn’t had any issues at all in nearly £60k miles (not even a rattle) and thanks to running winter tyres, has only needed one new set. The brakes are original, so no costs other than fuel, servicing, insurance and tyres.
I’ll say it again. It’s a great car.

But you could only spec memory seats with leather.

Lindsay spoke to the dealer in High Wycombe who bought the car yesterday. I didn’t know this, but with Motorway it’s a blind auction, you just submit your best and final bid and have no idea what the other bids are or even if there are other bidders.
He’s really happy with the ‘win’ though and thinks it will sell easily / quickly.

Hopefully your experience with Mototrway will be painless, it was for me a few years ago when I used them. I got top dollar for my Focus ST which went to Fords of Winsford, bloke turned up gave it the once over, money was with me before I could make him a cup of tea and off he went. However, there do appear to be a number of horror stories of dealers coming along, trying to renegotiate on damage not reported, wanting test drives etc and then beating the seller down a grand. It appears there is no punishment for buyers pulling out after the auction.
