It's a keeper! New car incoming shortly then A friend gave me a short passenger trip in one of these recently. It's pretty rapid in 1st and 2nd. His has the 18 inch alloys which look pretty awful It also has the big glass roof which is nice except he's on his 2nd one as it split at one of the corners. He had a battle with the dealership to get them to sort it - on an 18 month old, 5k mile car!

It often works out like that, but there isn't anything suitable in budget (£55-60k max) that I'm interested in, even looking at the used market so I do think we'll be keeping it another year. The sunroof cracking is a common issue on Golfs/Passats as is creaking, which might be part of the same issue. We didn't add it, as there were other higher priorities when I was trying to get it under £40k on principle and I'd read about the issues which they don't seem to have sorted over the last few years.

Perhaps the combo of the tight fitting roof and the former suspension of the R doesn't go down well with the lunar-surface-like roads we have in this country.
Glad you still like it though. The mk8 doesn't feel like a step on from the 7 to be honest so you're probably going to want to look elsewhere if you eventually decide to move on. I know a Boxster doesn't have rear seats but a toddler could fit in the back of a 911...

A 911 and a fast estate is my ideal 2 car garage, just need to get the eldest past his test and into a car so I only have 2 kids to move around.

Mats all in, no more than 1mm different at any one point to the originals. The ‘R’ blue stitching does mess with me a bit as the seats have white stitching, but it’s my fault for giving Lindsay the choice!

Gave the car a quick wash just now and impresses with how long Wetcoat has lasted, bear in mind the car wasn’t polished beforehand (was in need of it)and I’ve not topped it up in 10 weeks. OK, it’s garaged and it’s not winter, but it will have done about 3,000 miles.

I just saw a mk8 R estate and I must say it doesn't look as good as the previous generation estate. They appear to have made it slightly longer but its given it slightly too long a rear overhang. Didn't help that the one I saw hadn't been painted. For some reason VW just put on the primer and forgot the top coat.

I’ve seen pictures of the 8R estate and it does look better than the more basic models. Longer wheelbase than the hatch and despite a sloping tailgate it’s got the same capacity as the MK7 estate, thanks to the overhang…. But it’s not for me, especially not when you can a lightly used M340i estate for a similar cost.

Mind you I walked past two M340d Tourings parked within 20ft of each other yesterday (one in Tanzanite Blue and the other in an odd slightly beige-y light grey, and both with the black pack) and just thought they look a bit rubbish - really a car you would buy despite the styling.

You refer to it as ‘my poor car’, so clearly you don’t see it as being clean and well kept either! I don’t spend as much time cleaning cars as I used to and I’ve never been a ‘detailed’. I do like to look after my cars and try to find products that make that as quick and easy as possible. Neither cars have been cleared in 5 weeks and tonight was just a quick wash and DI water rinse as we are going away for the weekend. I cleaned the Golf as it wasn’t going to take a huge amount longer to do both, it was only an extra 15 mins.

I just haven't had time lately at a moment when the weather was also conducive to washing a car. It was last washed about four weeks ago, after which we promptly went to Suffolk and got it duly very dusty (that part of Suffolk is not known as the Sandlings for nothing) and re-decorated with dead flies, and several weeks of use and rain since has just condensed that into a generally grubby look.
Might wash it on Sunday if the weather is dry, before the day's sport-watching marathon kicks in.

It's resin that goes into a water filter, so no drying required as you don't get water spots/streaks from the water. I've got this one, but buy the DI resin from window cleaning companies as it's much cheaper, they put a premium on when it's linked to car cleaning and you have more choice on the types so can get a resin that lasts longer in hard water areas. www.raceglaze.co.uk/car-care-exterior/rinsing-water-filters/race-glaze-small-domestic-7L-water-filter/

Martin have you seen the way Evo have eviscerated the new Golf R in the latest mag? The whole thing basically - engine note, enjoyment, handling, the interface and controls. Absolutely slated it in a group test vs the A45 and Civic R. It won't hurt owners of your version, with which they had an ongoing love-in...

Interesting. I really miss the Flash car wash system, I do still use it but the filters are shot now and they stopped making them ages ago. When you live in hard water areas, anything that can soften the water is a good thing, I've always wanted a jet wash to do it but not sure they exist....

You can connect your pressure washer to the filter, but it does work better if you 'flood' water over the car. The Golf has a lot of gloss black trim low down, even when I dry the car off it's great not to have to dry off those small parts.

Not only that but the car they tested was at £49k (?) including a few driving related options. Maybe the boggo version on passive suspension is better but at that optioned-up price you'd clearly be better off in the Merc (minus the Halfords pack that their test car had) or save a huge wad of cash and get the Honda.

The only other review I've read on the Golf R was on Pistonheads by Dan P formally of this parish. He was saying pretty much the same thing that it was a very dull car until you gave it 10/10ths and only then did it come alive. Which 10/10ths in a new R is going to be too fast on our roads to enjoy. One thing that does seem to be very un-VW like is messing up the interior with poor controls and interface. Its an area they usually lead and quite rightly need pulling up on it.

Most are more complementary, but it does seem that you have to be completely 'on it' to get the most out of the car which isn't the case with the 7.5. So other than in pointless YouTube drag races, I don't see it as a step forward from ours. I don't think it looks as good and the infotainment is a mess (both the way it works and the many issues that owners are having), so I have no interest in getting one at all. The only positives vs ours for me are you can have ventilated seats and HUD.

Is the A35 not a more natural competitor to the Golf R than the A45? There is a silver A35 round my way which looks great and from what I have seen of it, goes very well indeed. The problem with the UK though is that people only want the top of the range so some very good cars tend to get overlooked. I'd take either of the Mercs over the Golf any day but at top end money the new 240i might be the best of the lot if you can do without a hatchback.

Yes, the A35 is the natural competitor, it's slightly slower in a straight line but I think that's because the 8R has great initial traction and it is a bit cheaper like for like. The new 240i interests me much more than the 8R/A35/A45/M135i, but it won't have enough space in the back. It will be interesting to see what the new RS3 is like and whether they've been able to make it better to drive, but it's a shame there isn't a 6 cylinder hatchback any more as I don't like the 5 cylinder any more than the engine in our R. I know I'm pretty much on my own when it comes to my disappointment with 3 and 5 cylinder engines, but I did show Lindsay a short clip of the current RS3 accelerating, asked her what she thought and she didn't like it. So I'm not completely on my own.
