Paddles look good, tempted to see if there's a similar set for the Ioniq. The paddles are really quite cheap feeling and also a bit small. I only use them to quickly drop it into sport for overtaking, not that it has as many opportunities as your Golf R does!

Not a mod this time, a ‘Lifestyle Accessory’. The Golf gets 65% rear window tints as standard, with 95% as an option which I didn’t want. What I didn’t know is it’s just a tint, it’s not like the sun protection glass I’ve had in BMWs so it’s pretty useless when it comes to keeping the sun off the little ones face. I have a (irrational maybe as it’s very strong) hatred for stick on blinds, especially brightly coloured or character ones, so I needed to find a better solution. Didn’t take long, proper fitted blinds aren’t that expensive and they’re quick / easy to fit and take back off. It looks a bit darker from the outside, but it’s like a darker tint unless you’re very close which is what I wanted. They fit nicely And you can drop the windows when they’re fitted which is handy, as it’s good to be able to drop all the windows when the car has been left parked in the sun. My Skoda Superb had some rather neat sun roller blinds which retracted into the rear doors.

I have a set of fitted shades, similar to those, in the VRS. I also had them in the V60 and the V50 before that. They are excellent for keeping the interior cooler, shading kids in the back and also the dog when she is in the boot. The windows appear tinted from the outside but they are easily removed. The ideal solution.

I had a Vectra for a little while and that had blinds built into the rear doors. They never got used, just like the doors!

Do either of you have a link handy? I fear my googling skills aren't what they may once have been!

I've got the OEM ones in the Gorilla. The B10 had the integrated pull up ones which are the best solution if you get to spec the car yourself.

Included with the Comfort Plus pack on the X5 as I'm sure you'll know, although they're manual, you need to move up to an X7 to get electric ones which is the very best solution. The laminated privacy glass on the RR is sufficient. He's only been bothered by the sun coming through the roof, so I leave the blind 50% open when the sun it out.

I’ve got the pull up ones in the X5 along with tints that match the drug dealer metallic black paint. Though most cars come with tinted windows in California because you’d roast without them in the summer. Many dealerships will put them in for free if the cars don’t come with them as people will walk away from a deal because of it.

I've just realised that I've missed its second Birthday (21st July). Not a huge amount to say that hasn't already been said, it remains fault free and other than the usual fuel/insurance/tax hasn't cost much to run at all. It's needed one service so far which was back in November which cost £220 and there's plenty of life left in the tyres thanks to running a second set through the winter, but I wouldn't mind them wearing a bit more quickly as I'd like to fit a set of PS4S and I struggle to justify that when they've got about 5mm of tread left.
We both enjoy driving it as much as ever. I do a couple of 200 mile / 3.5 hour trips in it a month which shows off it's comfortable side plus how important good seats/stereo are to me and it's great fun on the right road.
Total mileage over the 24 months is less than expected at 19,000 but the average will start to rise as I use it more for work. Calculated MPG of 33.4 is very good considering how it's used, you have to really push it hard to get it below 30mpg other than on short journeys.
The original plan was to keep it 4 years. I might pull that forward by a year, but only if there's something that I really want. That might be difficult as I would like it to fit in the garage and I did tell Lindsay that the eventual replacement will be fairly small (no bigger than a 3 series anyway), which rules out a lot of what I like, even ignoring the budget question. Anyway, that's some way off and we're really happy with it so I won't spend any time thinking about that right now.

Another mod, but this takes it back to looking a bit more OEM, which is always my preference. I found out about someone in the US making good quality replacement paddles which are about double the size of the standard ones and feel nicer to the touch but retain the illuminated +/-. Not particularly cheap, but just fitted them and I’m happy.

Nothing is cheap from the States when you add duty and VAT on and factor in the current exchange rate. They look really good though and the illumination will make them feel OEM.

Yes, added nearly 50% to the cost, but I think they’ll be worth it. The standard paddles are way too small as I use them a lot, the MK8 R has larger paddles as standard.

I’ve used Autoglym Aquawax off and on for a few years and I did some research to see if there was anything better and settled on Gyeon Wetcoat. First go today and applied it with a wash mitt and rinsed rather than just spray and rinse as it’s supposed to give a more even coat (which makes sense and it’s amazing. I decided to try it on the Golf without waxing it first just to see what it did and the results are clear in the pictures but what you can see is that the paintwork feels just like you’ve spent hours waxing it. Will be interesting to see how long it lasts.

Autoglym have just introduced a rapid ceramic wax which is applied the same way aqua wax is (although even more effective if you apply to a dry panel)
Review on the forensic detailing channel is very good, but the reason I love aqua wax is because every time a car is washed, it needs drying off and AW lets you dry and wax in one move (less time and less swirls). Even if you have a super slick coating, you still need to dry the car off after washing it, so I am not personally seeing the benefit of protection over and above AW.

Aqua wax is very good, but I wanted to try something different and in theory Wetcoat should be even quicker so it will be interesting to see how long it lasts.

The Golf is 2 weeks away from its 3rd Birthday. It is booked in for a service/MOT next week, which will include a Haldex service and filter clean, you have to specifically ask for the filter to be cleaned as it's not part of the service but they need it, it's pretty easy to end up with a FWD car after 20-30k miles if you don't get it done. Nothing else to say about the car, still enjoy driving it and it does exactly what we need. I thought I'd be very keen to change it by now as I'm doing a lot more miles in it and even after a day like last Friday when I spend 7.5 hours behind the wheel and had a very long day overall, that's not the case. It needs a polish and I've been seriously considering getting it done professionally, but not decided yet, so in the meantime its Birthday treat is a new set of carpet mats. They fit perfectly and are a much higher quality than the standard mats, deeper pile with leather edging. I let Lindsay choose the stitching colour, the standard mats have white stitching (it's blue on the 8R) but she wanted blue as it's the R colour. I avoided a contrast colour for the edging, which thankfully she wasn't keen on either so have stuck with the OEM look and they look really good.
