That's essentially what most peoples company pension pots are invested in so you're right to suggest that if they go tits up there will be a lot of people in a right mess.

Just had the bill through - £400 or thereabouts and I've paid him immediately. Cant complain at that at all. Will definitely use again. For a supposed money pit that isn't bad at all really and you're right that as a 12 year old vehicle there's always the chance of bills for maintenance. A 12 year old X5 or ML would be no different in that respect.

Yes, I know prices have increased across the board, especially EVs and an i5 can easily be over £100k as a start point is too much imo. Completely agree with the comments about the i-Pace, it’s a massive wasted opportunity. They were in a clear lead when it was launched and should have developed the package plus spun off a couple of other variants. It's even more surprising that JLR didn't do a Range Rover version given how successful the sales of those are.

It feels sometimes like Jaguar just gets in the way of its owners other plans and is hamstrung by trying to be luxury enough that punters will pay a premium but not so luxury that it takes buyers from the more luxury brand of the same group. Maserati is almost always in the same predicament. It's meant to be a luxury performance brand but suffers from having to make sure it isn't to luxury or too performance in case buyers of Ferraris notice that they can get a Maserati for half the price that is just as good. What you end up with in both cases is a company trying to sell products at a premium that are just not worth the extra because buyers know they're holding back on them.
Interesting point about Hyundai. They've instead tried to make their own luxury brand in Genesis but in the UK market, at least, they have no historical brand awareness which is what buyers of the cars it offers need to be convinced.

You'll enjoy today's when you put in the name correctly spelt and it doesn't accept it. And don't think adding in the name of the smaller hatchback it was originally based on helps either.

The Golf was a great car in mk7 guise. Its the latest one that's the problem. The mk5 was a massive improvement on the mk4 and was the basis for your Scirocco so must have had something right about it.

What I don’t understand is how come Tim, his brother, is so laid back and amusing. Both grew up local to me and Tim still lives in Cheam, goes to Sutton United regularly (poor bastard - they are shite) and is an all round decent chap. I've seen Tim perform and he's one of the funniest comedians I've seen. His gags are mostly of the Christmas cracker variety but his delivery is spot on and you can't help but chuckle. Interesting about the others. I find Ashley Neil a bit condescending at times and his insistence that we should all now be stopping on roundabouts for pedestrians just because some dope put a badly written new rule into the highway code gets on my wick. Cycling Mikey I'm in two minds about. Those who he films these days are all phone users. I think his days of stopping people going round the bollards in Regents Park are over, likely because drivers stuck in traffic can't chase him down, but all the same nobody likes a grass.

Just doing a Google search for what will replace copper throws up aluminium as the obvious answer so I imagine that's where it'll go. Interesting though to see that carbon nanotubes are also being cited as a possibility. If that's the case it could be a useful way to deal with all the carbon that is supposed to be being harvested from carbon capture technologies in the future. That's the theory at least. But like with nuclear fusion, its getting it to work that's the problem. Just glad that it's a lot smarter people than me working on it.

How do you find the original clip you were talking about? I've found d the Surrey Police one and I'm on their side. I'd expect the car driver to be fined for that offense so no reason why the cyclists shouldn't be either as they have just as much responsibility to follow the rules of the road. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to give their head a wobble.

It's no wonder you can't leave copper lying about these days without it being half inched. I'm not surprised that it's becoming scarce. There's been talk of copper shortages for years.
I remember reading some years ago that the next big thing in charging devices / cars etc was going to be contactless wireless charging through induction loops. The theory was you would have a panel on your wall with the loop inside and anything in the room would be able to draw power from it wherever it was in the room. Not sure where they've got with that or whether it is actually safe but I'm guessing that in theory it would massively reduce how much electrical cables were needed. I suppose the issue is how long it would take to switch all our devices over and in the meantime existing kit would all need adapters that use more copper.

But its been on the cards so long because they got a long way down one path of development and ripped it up and restarted, hence my feeling that when they do start releasing or at least showing new models over the next year or so the iPace will look utterly ancient (and they really do need to as the current range is bloody ancient and given the raft of new models LR has enjoyed that is an utter travesty how far Jaguar has been allowed to lag behind - if I was a Jag salesman I'd almost be embarrassed by what I had on offer compared to my mates in the BMW/Merc/Audi showrooms).
Hard to get your head around the fact that a 63 plate is now over 10 years old and yours seems none the worse for it - seems like only yesterday that our 65 plate Mini Clubman was a nearly new car and already it's 8 years old.
Think that's difficult to fathom. Try getting your head around the fact that this year is the 20 year anniversary of the release of the mk5 Golf. Not the 4, the 5!

I dislike the look of them from the outside and that's stopped me even having a close look at the interior. Having said that I have seen the occasional picture of the steering wheel and for some reason it reminds me of BL (excluding the Allegro) circa 1974!! There is a lot about a Tesla that doesn't tick the quality box. The new Tesla 3 looks a lot better now at the front end but it still doesn't make the car one I would want. That's true I was just thinking about the other advantages it still holds over competitors such as the charging network and it certainly is fast in a straight line. I'd be worried about getting into a new iPace right now as I think JLR will go down a different path with their next generation of EVs and it will quickly become obsolete. I may be completely wrong of course but the way they binned the electric XJ and haven't developed the iPace doesn't suggest it is a line they plan to continue. Extending the current one for a year to see what the options are in another year could help as I think by the end of this year we should know a bit more about the next generation of Jaguar EVs.

I think it's the lack of repercussions that's the problem. With no traffic cops about they think that as long as they act like nice little old lady past the speed cameras they can do what they like elsewhere. A lot of YouTube channels are showing that I fact bad driving is being recorded by a lot of their fellow motorists and the Police will at least act upon footage if it is clear cut enough. Would be better if they just policed the roads occasionally mind!

Bit of a dilemma that and I'm not sure what the answer is other than to have a look at the options and see where the maths stack up. I suspect the iPace isn't going to be around much longer (the lack of updates doesn't suggest its in Jaguar's long term plans) and the issue with options being removed is likely a parts issue rather than them no longer wanting to offer some highly profitable optional extras. I think you bemoaned the lack of decent charging before so at the risk of suggesting an amorphous blob of a car, would a Tesla model Y be worth considering? They seem to have good lease deals, all have a full suite of cameras and benefits from the supercharger network. There's a new version which looks a bit better than the original in terms of styling and unlike the Jaguar it is a serious model line for the brand so will be regularly updated.

What makes the number plates 4D as opposed to just 3D? Am I missing something? Do they light up or move about? I think they’re only called that so there’s a difference between them and 3D gel plates. I'm still not getting which part is the fourth dimension but maybe that's why I'm not in the market for a set of my own!

Having started to look at possible destinations this lunchtime, I'm not sure I'll be going anywhere on holiday this year. Prices of travel and hotels have gone up significantly and most of the "deals" I looked at do not seem good value for money (and many are unaffordable) UK prices also seem to be a bit shocking. When we went to York in late November we had to pay a small fortune (to my eye) for what I considered to be a mid-range hotel. The 'staycation' trend of the Covid years has really seemed to have push up the price of domestic holiday accommodation. I'd look at overseas holidays but the wife hasn't got a passport so we'd need to sort all that out first. Bit of a shame as it would be nice to be a bit spontaneous about this.

I've seen a couple about and having not really read much about them I assumed they were a £100k plus car like some of the high end German EVs so it definitely looks good for the price it actually is.

If its your own decision you could look at second hand or salvage parts but insurers have to replace with new OEM parts. Not necessarily, when my wife worked for an official Audi bodyshop the cheaper insurance companies would pressurise them to use pattern or secondhand, salvaged parts to keep repair costs down. Maybe I'm experiencing it from the point of view of lease cars where it is a requirement of the lease that new OEM parts are needed.

It's not just JLR that are having these problems, supply chains are squeezed for most manufacturers. I know someone who had a minor ding in their Tesla and has been without its for almost 2 months just waiting for parts. Apparently they're using so many building cars at rates they probably never expected that there's precious few spare bits to be made available for maintenance and repairs.
The other complication you have with the I Pace is that it's one of the most unique models that JLR ever made so getting generic parts will be equally impossible. If its your own decision you could look at second hand or salvage parts but insurers have to replace with new OEM parts.

The emissions issue is why I also fail to understand why so many roundabouts have 24hr traffic lights on them. I totally understand why a lot of busy roundabouts need them during peak or daytime hours but what's the point in making cars have to come to a stop and then accelerate away at 2am when the bloody thing is empty? Why not just turn them off after 10pm and until 6am? If you think about how many traffic lights there are across the country it would save a shit load of electricity too.

I'm sure the Ioniq used to do something similar without actually telling me as it would always be in electric mode all the way down my street which it wouldn't do anywhere else. The Octavia may be able to do something similar but I'll need to play about with the settings.
