Never been one for making these New Years Resolutions (" NYR") but this year I did and have thus far kept to it. Last year I had an increasing number of Twitter ("X" ) interactions with cyclists who are clearly blameless in everything they do and need have no regard for their own personal safety whatsoever because that's someone else's responsibility. It culminated over the Christmas holidays with a hugely viewed video clip of a cyclist in the dark on an unlit NSL country road with no reflective clothes and no lights. Some of the comments from cyclists were "the car driver should be driving for the conditions" (it was a clear, warm, dry night) going on to suggest that the driver should be doing [12mph] a speed that enabled them to react to any surprising event. Then there was one twat that took the video, aligned the time of the clip against street furniture on the section of road and came to the conclusion that the car was over 60mph (refusing to acknowledge that the video might not be running in real time). In fact there were so many foaming lycra-army twats defending the cyclist and blaming the driver (who was a fully trained emergency response vehicle driver...) that it took a couple of cycle magazine journos to point out that the cyclist was absolutely undefendable and that the cyclists seeking to do so made all cyclists look like arseholes and they wanted to be disassociated from them. So, my NYR is to mute all posts on my X feed that are cyclists telling me how shit car drivers are as they show a cyclist refusing to accept their own vulnerability because they are "in the right". I have even not replied to a Surrey Police clip of four Sunday cyclists being pulled over for turning right on a red light in Cobham. [cyclist whinge voice] "but the clip you showed didn't show them going across the white line...."[/cyclist whinge voice]. Most lycra-clad, oh-so-righteous cyclists are car drivers and it would be really interesting to put a camera in all their cars to see what emanates from their behaviour. Many cyclists are just normal, get on with it and ride to protect their lives but this vociferous few are making cyclists a scourge when they needn't be. A bit like twats in supercars in London, loud exhausts in motorcycles - the few idiots mean that the rest of us suffer for their cuntishness. The upshot for me is that my "muted" list on X is very large..... except Jeremy Vine because he's a total cycling clown that attracts cyclists nutters that I use as a mute pool.

The morgue is full of people being in the right. As a cyclist your only job is to protect yourself as best you can. Seems a large number however would prefer to strap a go pro to their heads and actively put themselves in danger just so they can post something on social media. Jeremy Vine does seem to be encouraging this behavior judging by some of the nonsense I've seen him post.

I know the exact clip - and feel the same re: those that were defending the cyclist/blaming the driver - utterly absurd. Oh - and Surrey Police posted the full clip in response to similar idiots showing the blatant disregard for the red light which has shut up the pricks - albeit temporarily

I’d happily contribute to a crowdfunded ‘hit’ on Jeremy Vine.

This is precisely why I ride in forests and on exclusive trails - my only enemies there are gravity, trees and rocks. If I crash, it's my fault.
I'm also not a self-important fucknut, so no chance of me being a road cyclist. I've recently stealthily joined a couple of roadbike pages on Facebook, aided and abetted by a friendly insider, and it's no better on there.
The internet has done strange things to humanity - it now seems that we are being overtaken by a breed of people whose level of self belief is inversely proportional to their self awareness.

I have never been on Twitter. My wife tried to get me to sign up years ago but I ticked so many of the privacy settings whilst signing up that it decided I wasn’t human and got arsey. So I happily refused to engage any further.
We were talking in the car on Sunday night about getting a dash cam. This after a very tall man in dark clothes and a hoodie (they always are) on an e-scooter overtook us on the Earls Court Road doing I should think at least 25mph (it’s a 20mph limit, so the traffic tends to be doing 23ish). There was quite a lot of traffic, we were in the right hand lane and he overtook on my left between the car in the left hand lane and us, swerved in front of me and then swooped back across both lanes to pass another car, then back again and then shot off up a side street on the right, causing the car in front to brake quite hard. Insane.

How do you find the original clip you were talking about? I've found d the Surrey Police one and I'm on their side. I'd expect the car driver to be fined for that offense so no reason why the cyclists shouldn't be either as they have just as much responsibility to follow the rules of the road. Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to give their head a wobble.

I don't have Twitter or whatever it's called and I ditched Facebook due to the ever increasing number of idiots on groups that have an opinion without any basis.
The problem with these idiots is that they end up dragging you down to their level and then beating you with experience.
I've managed to avoid such nonsense on Instagram so far.
Jeremy Vine is a cunt of the highest order. Ashley Neal on YouTube tried to suggest to JV that perhaps he needed to modify how he rode and got blocked as a troll car driver. The irony being that he is also a cyclist.
I can't abide that Dutch twat Cycling Mikey either - he's a confrontational knob head and I'm amazed he hasn't been KOd before now.

I've never liked him, on TV or radio; he seems to enjoy winding people up simply to get a reaction, whatever the topic or situation. Even Jeremy Kyle wasn't as bad as that!

What I don’t understand is how come Tim, his brother, is so laid back and amusing. Both grew up local to me and Tim still lives in Cheam, goes to Sutton United regularly (poor bastard - they are shite) and is an all round decent chap.

I've seen Tim perform and he's one of the funniest comedians I've seen. His gags are mostly of the Christmas cracker variety but his delivery is spot on and you can't help but chuckle. Interesting about the others. I find Ashley Neil a bit condescending at times and his insistence that we should all now be stopping on roundabouts for pedestrians just because some dope put a badly written new rule into the highway code gets on my wick. Cycling Mikey I'm in two minds about. Those who he films these days are all phone users. I think his days of stopping people going round the bollards in Regents Park are over, likely because drivers stuck in traffic can't chase him down, but all the same nobody likes a grass.

Some of Ashley's analysis can be quite interesting, but I agree on the new Highway Code rules. They are just asking for trouble. I haven't see a Cycling Mikey video in ages as he got on my tits too much, but I am glad if he has stopped holding up traffic.

He now just scours traffic jams catching people scrolling through WhatsApp or Instagram before riding off before they can wallop him though it hasn't stopped a few getting out and trying!

Overall @big Blue you raise an interesting point about modern life. I'm fairly typical of many of us in that I posted a bit of political stuff around election times on social media in the distant past, then decided a long time ago it was not appropriate and stuck to photos, but then got annoyed that there was something of a general feeling (not from my friends necessarily) that holiday photos was some form of showing off (personally I like to see suggestions of places to visit, and I take more photos on holiday, its not meant that way even 1%). Also I got sick of seeing that friends were Trump supporters, conspiracy theorists, anti-vaxers etc, even a tiny % of vocal shites can hog your feed, and I gave up using FB except for specific groups (swingers, cross dressers, you know - the stuff I'm into). But overall I never try and get involved in any sort of disageement, I just do not see the point, and I don't think people engage in a remotely constructive way, so what's the point? It's just pissing in the wind - in a massive storm in fact. Recently I saw some (reputable) stats that around 20% of a cross section of american young people (18-29) think the Holocaust is a myth. That gave me pause for thought, as it shows that people are influenced by what they see regardless of its credibilty, and truth is not necessarily a surivor. As a successful minority Jews are always fighting sheer numbers of opinions. It made me wonder if I should get stuck in more online on big issues, I do feel very strongly pro-freedom/progress/science and I don't think people in the West generally (and ironically the conspiracy theorists in particular) realise just how far states like Russia and China go to sponsor conspiracy nonsense in the West, while utterly undermining any sense of their own people's freedom. What has happened in Turkey and Hungary and other places, in supposed functioning democracies, where a long term leader gets a grip of the press and suppresses opposition, is also very worrying. Maybe the world needs more of us lucky enough to have a lot, including freedom, to get stuck in. But it would not be over cycling, especially as - away from London - as a regular driver/walker/cyclist/runner I see so much more dangerous behaviour from drivers. I go though phases of nearly being run over on every other run or cycle, and I'm very cautious. Running across the entrances of side junctions in particular, I've been a hair's breadth from being run over many times, and I'm not foolishly pressing my right of way over trafic turning into a side road - if they are not indicating or slowing, how do I even know they are turning in? Some cars turning right into a side road nearly run me over when I was already crossing the first part of it when they turned - and running, you can't just stop on a sixpence. Half of them are texting as well. Drivers have a responsibility for the possible effect of the two tonnes of metal they are propelling, and while I hate some of the OTT "the pedestrian is always right" stuff from people like Brake, with my eyes I see drivers as a much more regular issue. So pick your battles BB - argue about something important, if you value your time Or you will send yourself to an early grave arguing with yoofs about something insignifcant in the greater scheme of things. www.economist.com/united-states/2023/12/07/one-in-five-young-americans-thinks-the-holocaust-is-a-myth

The conspiracy theorists are impressive in their delusional views with, often, absolute belief in their theory (or theories in the case of many) and when you look at discussions they get into even when presented with overwhelming evidence that their beliefs are utter shite they still choose to believe whatever they have been believing. So ultimately, engaging with them is a waste of time.
You just have to hope they never get into positions of power while still maintaining those beliefs.

Of relevance to this discussion, and according to Susie Dent from Countdown, there is a ye olde English word for people who insist they are right even when there is clear evidence that they are wrong, which is "mumpsimus"!
She also proffers up the relevant "ultracrepidarian" (also dating back to times of yore), which means someone who loves to talk about subjects they know nothing about...
So, for example, Donald Trump would seem to be an example of an ultracrepidarian mumpsimus...as would some Twitter-frequenting cyclists by the sounds of things.
