Seems like this engine is no longer available in the 7-series. Had a quick look at the website and it's either diesel or petrol/electric hybrid. Doesn't look like you can get a big V-8 petrol in the 5-series estate either; the world is a poorer place :-( Let’s just hope they do an m5 touring

It could well be WLTP related and they’ll be available again later in the year. Every time I see those letters I think of "World Traffic Lights grand Prix" for the dyslexic... is it just me ??

The never ending roadworks on the M6 do help with mpg, but I can’t wait for them to be finished.

Yes the roadworks are tedious. It was heavy coming out of Manchester at 5pm as well. Saved some time by zipping down the M6 Toll and then over on to the M1 and in via Brent Cross and the North Circular.
It was showing a bit over 45mpg at an average speed of a little over 60mph just before we reached the bottom of the M1. Both figures then took a hit coming into London.

The M6 continues to provide good economy, new journey record today, which includes some enthusiastic exits from the various 50mph zone, so could have been better. All in Voodoo (Adaptive) mode as well, can’t be doing with Eco mode. Proof.... Tank average is 33.9, which is fairly normal and is roughly a real 32mpg. Range is 130 miles with 460 miles completed.....nice.

It’s not a fluke....fairly early start to get to Warrington this morning. 75-80mph when clear, lots of 50mph limits and queuing around Knutsford. Need fuel now, only 35 miles range, but it’s done 530 miles since the last fill up. I think 450 is achievable on a regular basis which I’m very happy with. I did exactly the same journey in the Golf today. It was only on 430 miles when I left so I expect it will improve further but I didn’t accelerate as hard / as much as in the 750 as it’s not run in. I used voodoo cruise a fair bit and think it will be better without, will find out on the way back tomorrow. Still not a voodoo cruise convert, but it was good in stop/start traffic as it works down to 0mph. Actual journey time was pretty much the same, I lost 5-6 mins getting it out of the garage and fiddling with my phone / Android auto. 2 miles less, which makes sense as the speedo is slightly more accurate.

So 450BHP of 4.4 V8 turbo is more economical than 300BHP of 2.0 4 pot turbo! Whodathunk it.

So 450BHP of 4.4 V8 turbo is more economical than 300BHP of 2.0 4 pot turbo! Whodathunk it. So much for downsizing! Well, downsizing worked for me! 245bhp of flat six petrol vs 150bhp 4-pot turbodiesel leaves the TD on average nearly two times more economical! (22mpg super-unleaded over 121000+ miles vs 41.81mpg over 2438 miles), with a last tank average of 45.24mpg.
Using an app now - can you tell?

Good stats! Not surprised you’ve seen such a saving when you’ve downsized to a diesel and the Subaru mpg was so shockingly bad!

Seems to be getting slightly more economical now it’s gone past 10k miles, makes the 20s mpg when really pressing on and enjoying the performance & sound much easier. It did 560 miles on the last tank but I couldn’t fill it back up properly as the pump cut off at £99! Lindsay took the Golf to a meeting in a Staines yesterday and it did 43.5mpg....who needs diesel? This run home was a mixture of slow traffic leaving Chester, roadworks, stationary traffic on the M6 and 80-85mph when the motorway cleared.

Also this thread has reminded me to book mine for an annual inspection service. That was meant to be a bit tongue in cheek. I still think it depends on the options you have eg I’d have a 740d over a 740i.

I suspect that Martin doesn't drive his 740 all the time, like he was in a mileage marathon! If you could get 40mpg out of a 'Stang whilst extracting a significant part of its performance on every journey, then .........

If you could get 40mpg out of a 'Stang whilst extracting a significant part of its performance on every journey, then ......... Errrr....750..... Despite the surprisingly good results, no, I definitely don’t drive like I’m in a mileage marathon, but there are long periods in average camera controlled 50mph zones on the M6 which is pretty much optimum for fuel consumption. If I drove like that all the time and put it in Eco (which I have tried but don’t use now) to get the coasting function, then it would be somewhere in the mid 50s.

To put in perspective how brilliant it is my 7500 mile average in my 1.0 125ps auto is 34.8mpg. Downsizing is definitely not working here.

I've managed to get the 320 uo to 50.0mpg (according to the trip computer, so more likely about 48 really) over the last 3k miles mainly by discovering the Journey Computer readout and using it as a challenge. I reckon that's poor even before I see what Martin gets!

My average over 9k miles is 31.4 (33.5 OBC), with a best full tank of 33.8 and worst of 27.7. The Golf has only done 1.5k miles, average of 33.8mpg (OBC 34.4, so more accurate).

Not mine...that would be too unbelievable. My Dad sent me this picture earlier, I think he’s trying to justify going for the 630d rather than 640i! Clearly a gentle run, somewhere in Northern Spain as they’re on route back from a couple of months touring around.

Bit of a gentle cruise today, speed set to 75mph on the motorway but it included a driving through the centre of Northampton, a fair few miles on A roads and a full bore exit from the M6 toll as well. Didn’t realise until I’d arrived and was surprised to see how much my average had gone up by.

I got almost exactly the same mpg (indicated) on the Kuga last week running from home to Higham Ferrers and back. I suspect that my average speed was a little bit less than yours though, and I didn't go over 70 (by GPS rather than the car speedo)

Why am I wasting my time in a 2 litre diesel! That's very impressive Martin. Overall average is around 32mpg, as it drops considerably when you use all the horses. It’s easy to have a 30mpg journey, but that’s just as impressive in its own way. You must be getting an average starting with a 5?

I'm getting an average staring with a 4.... a 7-series and even a 5-series are simply too big for me, even if I could afford one.
However the prospect of a Kuga powered by a BMW V-8 petrol engine is intriguing (shame that the X1 only seems to come with 4-cylinder engines and is somewhat less economical than your 7-series V-8 !)

Even my Eco Hugger Merc only gets 38-40MPG...... I can get 30mpg out of the 911 when driven on a run....save the planet and all switch to 750s
