I love how your non breakdown would be anyone else’s disastrous failure!
Looks like a good few days.

I love how your non breakdown would be anyone else’s disastrous failure! Looks like a good few days. If I hadn’t had a spare, I would have removed the offending prop, stuck the transfer in diff lock and ran it as RWD and got stuck lots until I could find a LR specialist to replace the joint. I’ve already repaired the dodgy prop so I have a working spare once again.

My Series IIa was front wheel drive for a couple of days after a rear half shaft went bang. Looks like a superb few days out.

My Series IIa was front wheel drive for a couple of days after a rear half shaft went bang. Looks like a superb few days out. Yes, the most common fault with the Defender is stripping a drive flange. Mine has welded flanges incorporated into the solid halfshafts ata the rear, so is unlikely to strip. The front does have removable flanges, but these don’t have any play. More than can be said for the front diff though. It has an MOT, but it needs a bush kit for the entire vehicle. I am having poly bushes fitted as the metalastic ones have only lasted 20k miles. Hopefully have it back on Monday. Meanwhile I am going red neck in the Toyota.

Changing a prop shaft in a muddy field. How very Land Rover enthusiast of you ;-)
Looks like a good few days was had by all. Judging by the current heatwave and how quickly all the mud has gone to solid ruts round here, you caught the last of the mud.

I think some of these companies are now starting to have some issues. There is a finite number of people willing to pay their inflated prices and the market is becoming saturated.

It's back and unsurprisingly drives a lot better. The bill was marginally eyewaterin, but a day's labour for MOT, service and re-bush (which is a PITA especially when bushes have to be cut out because they are seized) and the cost of the bush kit soon add up.
Bargain of the day was a free Land Rover roof rack ladder to fit my rack. The garage had been trying to sell it for ages without success, so decided to donate to me.

^ yes, but it's a long way up to reach the first step, even from an open tailgate..... so you probably need to carry a small stepladder anyway

Spent the best part of the afternoon replacing the shitty reconditioned steering box I installed last year, with a brand new genuine Adwest one. It’s like having a new car. The reconditioned one required adjusting as soon as it was installed and started leaking fairly shortly after fitting. The final straw was in the last few weeks when it started losing assistance with no warning. I did replace the pump, but it didn’t improve matters.
It was mucho £££ but I was sick of messing about with it.
it needs a set of rear pads (again) and a pair of rear calipers. I have the calipers, but need brake pipes making up as they are seized in the old calipers.

Managed to install the new calipers and rear pads. Good job too. The hub seal on the near side had failed and let all the bearing grease out to contaminate the brakes. I suspect I damaged it replacing the discs a while back as that side was a pain.
Luckily, I have a new hub seal as part of a wheel bearing kit I carry as spare so utilised that. If it fails again, it’s going to need a stub axle each side as they are pitted.

I bought a tracking tool. It only does total toe angle, but as that is the only adjustment that can be made on the Land Rover, I thought it was worth a punt at £70. I hadn’t had the tracking looked at since I installed HD drag link, track rod and ball joints back in December other that using an extendable pole to roughly set it straight ahead.
I set up the tool this morning and it was reading 10’ toe out. Specification is 0’-20’ toe out, so I am very pleased with that. Just goes to show that sometimes the old methods work perfectly well.

A heartwarming picture of 2 old friends meeting .Fred Bostock, 96, who worked on the Land Rover series 1 in 1948.Might be only survivor with 1948 land Rover connection?

Was there a big land rover series 1 event on Anglesey area this weekend. I must have spotted at least 30 very old Landys heading that way on Friday afternoon but can find little about it on the web

Not sure. There isn’t anything in any of my magazines about it, but it appears it was the Series 1 Owners Club National Rally.

And on that we have another blog. I noticed the hub seal I replaced a couple of weeks ago is pissing grease all over. I’ve ordered a new stub axle kit.
