I’ve been running around like a looney. The in laws were here last night and this morning which has put paid to me setting off for Silverstone this afternoon, so I’ll be setting off early in the morning.
I had to go to Darlington this afternoon and halfway there the battery light came on, voltmeter dropped to 12.3V and the Rev counter stopped working. I tested the alternator when I got there and there was 12.3V so it wasn’t the fuse. Bugger!
Luckily my local LR specialist (not the one I actually use regularly) keeps a massive stock of parts and had the required 100amp unit in stock at £150. I thought they were half that, but after checking Paddock Spares, it seems that is a good price for a genuine Denso one.
Fitted in half an hour and voltage back to 14V at the alternator and battery. Phew.

I’m obviously not very happy about it, but it seems as though someone had put a shitty aftermarket alternator on previous to my ownership. It has also done quite a bit of wading.
I don’t think it is water that has killed it though. I think the brushes have disintegrated.

It’s painful, but nothing compared to depreciation.

Indeed, depreciation is effectively zero. A few hundred quid a year in maintenance is nothing in comparison. Had my first experience of Land Rover Death Wobble after hitting a pothole the other day. There were a couple of bolts that needed tightening on the steering tie bar, but I’ve put the OEM steering damper back on as the supposedly HD one wasn’t doing a lot. 🙄 Refund has come in on the aftermarket steering box too which is nice. What is annoying is the power steering pump relief valve appears to be sticking open randomly resulting in loss of assistance. It isn’t the end of the world, the car is still drivable without PAS, although it is incredibly heavy at parking speeds and I wouldn’t want to take it off road. I’ve flushed the fluid several times and wen out in it today and it has behaved, so hopefully that will be the end of the steering dramas. On a happier note, here it is doing a wedding.

Did a little investigation today. I have noticed that my boost gauge would boost up to 1.25 bar and drop to just below 1.0 bar. I have my gauge plumbed into the inlet manifold so it can show up any leaks. There was also a misting of oil in the engine bay. I had checked all hose clips but couldn’t find any leaks so I removed the intercooler. It looks as though the horns had been rubbing on the intercooler over time and have rubbed a hole it. 🙄. I’ve relocated the horns to the inner wing and have ordered a new uprated intercooler. I’ve also got a performance headlight loom on order as my headlights seem a little dim. The wiring is notoriously poor on Defenders and Discoveries of this era. For the cost of the loom, it would be more to make one up myself than buy one in.

New intercooler finally arrived today. Apparently Fedex had employed a new driver and he was not delivering.
Old one had clearly had it. It holds full boost at the manifold, doesn’t smoke as much under full load and EGTs are lower as a result.

Old one had clearly had it. Fedex driver or intercooler ? The guys probably knackered after spending years humping Land Rover spares into the back end of Northumberland. Apparently the life expectancy of a Fedex driver on that route is just 6 months now.

Well there's your problem - you think you live in Co. Durham. 😂 Lots get confused. The A68 from Allensford North is Northumberland. Co. Durham starts at the river Derwent.

Darlington is a borough (unitary authority) and technically part of Co. Durham.

Darlington is a borough (unitary authority) and technically part of Co. Durham. Why did they ever start fucking about with the old country boundaries? Everybody knew what was where. Now it is anybody's guess. When my grandfather was told he no longer lived in Yorkshire but was now in Humberside it nearly killed him. And inevitably Yorkshire got reinstated in the next round of re-organisations. I'm sure it is just to give local government employees good go's on the redundancy / re-employment merry go round.....

Goodies from he show have been fitted. New lights for the roof rack and some stainless steel door hinges.
The roof rack lights were letting in water so I saw some decent ones at a good price. Just need to wire them up, but I’m waiting for some higher rated cable as the new ones are more powerful.
The pins had gone in my old hinges resulting in droopy, hard to close doors and they were rusty. Matt look stainless won’t need painting and don’t look too in your face.
I’ve also fitted a better quality gauge pod - it has the advantage of an extra hole so I can reinstall the clock.

😂 Ouch!
I’ve been getting flashed rather a lot so took it to a friendly MOT place to get checked.
Passenger side was marginally high and driver’s side was way to high. All adjusted free of charge. I must have knocked the adjustment out while removing the bowls while fitting the headlight loom.

Service today and a couple of minor maintenance items.
Oil and filter change. I’ve changed oil from Millers 10W40 semi synthetic to the Land Rover recommenced 15W40 mineral. I was going to check the valves as I thought it was sounding a little noisy, but the oil change seems to have sorted it. I also repaired a bad connection on the oil light sender.
I’ve had a couple of instances of death wobble which really isn’t nice. I checked the swivel preload by hand and they seem OK so I changed the panhard rod bushes as there was some movement there. Took it out for a drive and went over a few potholes without issue, so hopefully that’s sorted once and for all.
Final couple of items was to add an earth from the main dash back to the battery as I’ve been noticing a few voltage fluctuations (could be bad fuse connection, but I’ll start with the obvious). I’ll see how that goes before checking the voltmeter and the fuse connections. Last but not least was to replace a rear mudflap. They are flimsy items and have to be treated as consumables as they tend to rip very easily.
That’s all sorted for another six months.
