Following on from our previous location....... Great day on Saturday with some Series owners. I had to do some running repairs to my side steps. One of the lanes was rutted and the brackets that clamp to the chassis were removed by the terrain. I have bent them back and re-clamped them, but it has confirmed that if I wish to continue using my Defender on the green lanes, I will need to do something about it as they have taken a severe battering. I have ordered a fuel tank guard and a pair of tree sliders from Paddocks. They are supposed to be good quality and they are galvanised so should be able to take some abuse. I don't want to run without either steps or sliders as it leaves the sills and the soft aluminium door skins vulnerable to car park damage. Found a tank guard that fits. It was a fair bit cheaper but still 5mm galvanised steel. IMG_1362 by Mark Lee, on Flickr

Today I fitted an alarm. It is in theory, a thatcham cat 1, but it won't be as I am not qualified. Not that it matters. Defenders are so easy to start without even trying to bypass the alarm and immobiliser it's pointless paying £150-200 for someone to fit. I just wanted something that will make a noise if a window is smashed and or someone tries to get in. The only reason I had to buy something reasonably sophisticated is that I wanted a microwave as opposed to an ultrasonic. Defenders are a touch draughty at the best of times and false alarms at 3am would be a pain.

Is it worth fitting a tracker? Or Smartwater marking the panels and major parts?

Is it worth fitting a tracker? Or Smartwater marking the panels and major parts? It has a Skytag already and I've done so with the smart water, although I've cancelled the subs for the smartwater as it was a ripoff.

I fancy getting my wheels refurbished. I am no longer keen on the gunmetal finish now that the gunmetal chequer plate sills have gone. They have been done cheaply (had a blow over) in the past and the paint is flaking off. I will get a new tyre for the spare at the same time so all of them match in both size and tread.
In the meantime, I have managed to bag a set of five alloys with mud tyres on for £200! Depending on how good the wheels are, I may just get my all terrains put on the new set and flog the tyres, or I may use the tyres for green laning.

Surely there has to come a point when you just can't physically add anything further to it?

There are no bits to add to it. Just tweaks. I removed the side steps to fit the new slider sills and underbody protection.
I just need someone to fabricate a couple of brackets so I can mount the hi-lift jack to the roof rack.

It's passed the MOT. Let's face it, it would have been disappointing had it not done! Just waiting for the 12k service to be completed.

I was sick of the slack in the wipers. Last year, I changed the wheel boxes, drive cable, motor and gearbox but the wipers, although much better, still flopped about. I remember that the drive cable was a pig to fit and was a Britpart item while the wheel boxes were Bearmach bits. I ordered a Bearmach cable. It fitted really easily and all the slack has disappeared. Shitpart for a reason then, although they are supposed to be getting better.
I took delivery of some chassis paint and have given my rear crossmember and towbar a couple of coats. They look much better. If we get a warm day then I may treat the rest of the chassis (it has been painted but it hasn't proved to be very durable).
Finally, I fitted a new panhard rod (stops lateral movement of the axle in relation to the chassis). I was advised at the service that there was some play in the bushes. £25 for a new rod with bushes attached and took half an hour to fit. Steering is now very firm with no slack and I hope it has stopped an occasional slight shimmy under braking.

What make is it and would it do for a TD5 chassis? Herself's is looking very sorry for itself, and we were going to de-rust it and slap some Hammerite on it. Proper stuff would be much more preferable I reckon, if not too expensive.

Painted crossmember - much better. Went and collected my wheels this morning. I am glad I decided to take the advice of the wheel place and stay with the dark colour. With the standard spare set on: - And with the refurbished set back on: - photo and image hostingI am really pleased with them.

The dark wheels do look a lot better. Interestingly, quite a decent number of forum cars have dark (or partially dark) coloured wheels.

The extended body panels would hide the scratches, for sure! It clicked over to 210k the other day. Caught this this morning.

I forgot to mention. I was having some issues changing gear so removed the gaiter to have a look. As it turned out, the gear selection turret was loose on the top of the gearbox and moving around side to side - that would certainly explain it. However, the selector pin is very badly worn where the bias springs rest (it has a deep groove on one side) so I have taken the opportunity to upgrade - as you do. Hopefully will be taking delivery of a Synchro Gearboxes Slickshift. I have tightened it up for the time being and there is a massive improvement so I am glad there isn't anything wrong with my year old gearbox! Took it laning yesterday. I shouldn't have bothered polishing all the scratches out a couple of weeks ago!

Fuck, arse and bollocks. I had to go to Darlington today to deal with an errant fire alarm. On arrival, the alarm on the Defender started doing odd things. It still allowed me to start it but the hazards would keep flashing beyond the usual single or double flash. Water has found its way into the control box which I placed behind a speaker. I've bypassed the immobiliser for the moment and removed the control box, dismantled it and sprayed it with contact cleaner. It is currently in the airing cupboard overnight. I'll try it in the morning. If not it means a new alarm. if it does work, I'll relocate the control box to a dryer location!
