Try a BMW specialist for the brakes like NCB Autokraft. Pretty sure you’ll get it done a lot cheaper than that main dealer price

Agreed, but I wasn't going to use that to negotiate with 😉

Or buy the bits yourself and take it to a local garage

It'll be getting looked over by Gav the Lotus specialist who maintains most of my cars, with any luck they won't need doing until next year.
For London based people would you go through the centre from Croydon or round the M25?

Unless you’ve got all day to sit in town and take in the sites

School holidays should make it a slightly easier journey. As Ed says, M25 every time.

From Croydon you can do South Circular then A4 / M4 out to the M25, avoiding the M23 / A3 interchange roadworks. Or maybe that was what Ed and Martin meant by "M25"?

Or maybe that was what Ed and Martin meant by "M25"? While the South Circular is a nebulous concept not in the form of actual separate roads like most of the north, I would agree with this at the moment - the massive stretch of roadworks past the A3 is not much fun. Then again I just checked both out and the M25 way still shows as faster! Maybe that's the time of day. Glad you did it anyway Brian - enjoy it! One of the better engines of recent years I think....

I was thinking the A24 then aiming for the bottom of the M1. The roadworks by A3/Heathrow added an hour onto the journey, will use M25 but keep an eye on traffic I'm unusually apprehensive with this purchase, will be happier when I have keys and have put a few miles on it to confirm it lives upto expectations.... although there is no logical reason why it won't. Part of it is a feeling of unnecessary indulgence when we have a patio to complete!

More or less apprehensive buying a not that old BMW vs a 928 / Elan etc?! Would be great to get a fleet update when you have the time Bryan. Assuming the answer it they're all parked up/SORN, in which case it won't take you long at all!

Strangely more apprehensive than the others, dunno why, maybe large purchase privately , should probably use money to get others working. May lose 911 garage so much tidying and a light recommissioning there too!

Hope you enjoy it, it should be great! Shitty day for a cabriolet…. Just back from getting the tyres fitted to our BMW (which in cool weather is fine, all its battery nonsense seems to occur on sunny days). Weather for ducks!

Privately or off a dealer. Then that seems to pass, it does not blow up in the first weeks, and then that passes. Enjoy the trip back home.

Privately or off a dealer. Then that seems to pass, it does not blow up in the first weeks, and then that passes. Enjoy the trip back home. I'm back home now including taking Mrs M out for a spin (chocolate Milkshake at McD's - classy!) It passed her comfort approval and the wind deflector does make a huge difference to buffeting
Uneventful transfer of ownership and trip home, where I defied advice and went through London to the M1 (the M25 was solid red traffic) - I went up the A23/A205 through Clapham common, over Battersea bridge, through Earls Court/Shepherds Bush. A40 then north circular to the start of the M1. A steady 15-20mph run with no real traffic, enjoyable passing places I stay when in london (Hiltons Kensington/Olympia) but in a diffrent context. Buses don't half come close and lanes eg around clapham common just seem to have 2 vanish into 1 on a junction with no warning. Probably quicker sitting in traffic on the M25 but I enjoyed testing myself and my sympathies to those having to do it on a frequent basis! Hopefully I don't go into any congestion charging zones
The car behaved impeccably - over 40mpg on the raining/roadworks way home - went like stink on the occasions I got to partially open the taps, sounds lovely but refined on a cruise in comfort. I really rated the satnav and HUD which saw me through London without incident - I wasn't fussed about HUD prior to using it but am glad to have it now. Seats were very comfy and iDrive very intuitive to use - yet to try the voodoo lights
I shat myself when the iDrive flashed up over maps to tell me the Car was on fire - but then worked out it was a car was on fire on the M1 traffic alert!
Still learning various aspects of the car (auto wiper sensitivity) but I think we will get on famously.
Martin - what were the leather wipes you reccomended?

I used to use Dr Leather wipes, they’re great for a ‘maintenance’ clean/wipe over and leave a nice leather smell.
My leather is protected, so occasional use of a mild cleaner then re-protect every 6 months is all I need to do. It helps that it’s black leather.

All it needs is a pair of genuine MPerformance black front grilles (and definitely not the double-vane M sort) - they just look better - car looks more wider and lower and more modern.

Martin - what were the leather wipes you reccomended? I also use the Dr Leather wipes to clean my seats and then use the Dr Leather Dye Block to prevent any staining from jeans etc. My seats are smoked white and 5 years on still look the same colour as they did when new.

That long? Jeez .. .. I know! it's actually 5 1/2 years now but to be honest nothing else really interests me. I have a client who got a great deal on a 9mth old 850i but they do free fall in values. BMW's new prices are now so ridiculous I wouldn't consider them. Macan GTS possibly but nothing really has me looking up the road tests and feeling a sense of anticipation and excitement. Part of that is that I need something big enough to carry golf clubs because a Boxster or Cayman would otherwise be very acceptable. I will just wait until something sparks an interest.

One of the Evo guys used to get his road bike in the back of a Cayman... And he was tall IIRC, it will have been a big size! This was my attempt in the Boxster. I had to get my left leg under that seat post, and yes I've changed my bar tape since then It was one trip one time, not to be repeated...........

We did discuss it a while ago but Susan dismissed it after she realised how many times I would be taking her car! Surely she'd be delighted to have a Boxster/Cayman instead! That's OK though, we've moved on now it's clear practicality isn't really an issue.....I've already started looking on the Porsche used car finder for you
