I’m calling bullshit on the China situation, there is no way this has disappeared in China without a vaccine, none. I’m also getting more than a little titsed off with the blame game (oh, if only they would follow the rules). It seems to have escaped the attention of many that throughout every single restrictive period we have had ten million plus people going to work every day and at least one person from over half the households in the UK going to the same place as everyone else (the supermarkets). If this new strain is 70% more infectious than the existing strains that are apparently multiple times more infectious than flu, then it’s going to whip round the country in double quick time whether you fart about with your mask or not. I also detest the holier than thou attitude as I can guarantee that apart from a few hermits, everyone breaks the rules on their own terms - just read this thread. Boris is also an utter shit for not pulling the trigger when he found out about this strain days ago, instead of properly discussing in Parliament and giving people notice he bullshits his way through and then does another weekend flip flop when all the MPs have left for Christmas. Any credibility he had left, he has just pissed away. Agree entirely that this is just another example of Boris’ total and utter incompetence. He just hasn’t met a situation that he can’t fuck up and make worse by dithering and trying to defy gravity. Leadership is about tough decisions and also about sensible and well-judged one that show evidence of strategy and forward planning. This is a complete shitshow of a situation. But then again if you vote for lazy incompetent chancers, don’t be surprised when that’s what you get.

Support bubbles are for singles but childcare bubbles are the entire household. Ironically my dad buggered off to the Netherlands yesterday to have Christmas with my sister and her partner and arrived by car ferry this morning. Luckily he didn't fly as he wanted to take the dog with him. The childcare bubble is mildly preposterous in that case.

Government has to make a judgement trying to balance the obvious mental health benefit of a festive relaxation to the rules and the spread of the virus. The government were informed of the risks of the virus at the end of the week and a change was announced almost immediately.

What risks ?, the bit about the new mutation that’s actually been in circulation for over 3 months and in that time has not proven itself to be any more contagious ?

Is Waverley an administrative boundary outside Surrey? I can’t understand why that’d be subject to different rules. All the rules for Surrey specifically exclude Waverley. Mind you Godalming is a bit like the village of the damned.... Thank the Lord for Jeremy Hunt our MP for Waverley who is the chair of the Health and Social care commitee. It means the pubs been open all weekend and Ive taken advantage of that. Can't see us lasting much longer then this week in Tier 2 as our numbers are escalating.

To be honest, I have zero clue what the current status is right now. Not one bloody clue.

Professor Nick Loman of the COVID-19 Genomics UK (COG UK) consortium, identified the new set of mutations as VUI – 202012/0. He confirmed that it is not new, as COG UK identified it in September, and there is no proof that it is more infectious.
So this is not true then ?
This professor from this consortium did not say the above ? Or if he did he was lying?
What do the behaviourial scientists of SAGE have access to that COG UK don’t ?

Nearly everyone I've spoken to so far yesterday and today was strongly of the view that the government was over-egging the danger from a new strain to mask their late and screeching U-turn.
And I suspect that, unfortunately for Boris, whether that's actually true or not is almost certainly moot at this point in the court of public opinion.
Almost nobody who isn't a Tory party member trusts anything this PM or any of his hopeless and hapless ministers does any more.
And this isn't a left-wing or right-wing thing. I don't know many left-wingers. Most people I know are natural Tories. But they know incompetence when they see it.

We formed a childcare bubble with the family of one of Mini Eff's school friends, but my understanding was that it applied only to the children - ie the children can mix in either household, but not the adults.

Well, scaring us all by stating that the new strain was highly contageous and that thevirus is "out of control" has backfired totally: www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-55389505Port of Dover closed for min of 48 hours to France, Kent filling up with trucks that want to cross to France, possibility that no "foreign" truckers will want to come to the UK in case they get stranded here

Yes you wonder whether they forgot that what scares the UK population might also be heard outside these shores.
Still, good practice for Brexit.

Yep, will still be seeing the eldest and her family on Christmas day evening, she's Surrey (Waverley) but in tier 2, we are her support bubble. How does that work? One end of a support bubble is supposed to be a single person? Something to do with her having a child under 1 year of age.

I can't help but feel that France was overjoyed at the thought of cutting off the UK and they couldn't wait to be first. For a Govt Minister to state that the virus is out of control is total madness. It's the kind of statement that would/could/should end a Political career - unless of course this is similar to telling everyone that a huge asteroid is going to hit the earth in the next 24hrs and we are all doomed in any case. I certainly hope that isn't the case and this was just more incompetence. We should all worry though that all the political alternatives available to us in the UK are just as equally incompetent.
I see they are suggesting now that they might vaccinate all teenagers to stop them spreading the virus. Make up your mind boys! Maybe the SAGE scientists are just as clueless but I reckon you could come up with better policy around the average kitchen table.

Hancock isn’t backing down though is he, tier 4 until Easter (at least)
It’s worked though, it’s scared the trousers off my in laws and Christmas will now involve no hugging, no presents and lunch only (apparently).
My suggestion of cancelling completely and having a rational Christmas with a curry has fallen on deaf ears.

Has the anger from the Midlands started yet?
I remember seeing Andy Burnham and others on TV a few weeks ago complaining about being put into Tier 3 and asking for that to be reversed OR more support given. Meanwhile yesterday Andrew Marr interviewed the WHO lady mentioned earlier (Maria van der Kerkhoff or something) who said they'd been in conversation with UK virologists monitoring and researching the new faster spreading strain of Covid SINCE SEPTEMBER!
Oh dear. Looks like the midlamnders were sort of right in a way.
It's not, er, good optics (hateful phrase) for those in the regions who think that the South East and London get special treatment is it?

I am sure that who knew what when and who said what to whom when will no doubt carry on for days about this new strain that may or may not be more infectious and that may or may not be more dangerous. It appears that the new strain is already on other countries. Plus the fact we identified it does not mean t started here.
I'd really like somebody to stand up and have the courage to say that really, even after all these months, there is more that we don't know about Covid than we really do know. And that all decisions are based on some interpretation of possibilities rather than certainties. But I doubt that will happen - from ether the government (who can't appear to not know everything...) or the opposition (who just see the opportunity to grandstand any decision). Our trouble is that all western civilisations seem to suffer from "the Government must do something" disease. Which is far worse than Covid. Way too many people have come to expect the government to be able to "do something" about anything and everything. And that there is no problem that can't be solved by a combination of "do something" and large amounts of other people's money. And to misquote Thatcher, we will eventually run out of other people's money.
And people may rile against the UK government but tell me anywhere that is doing any better in Europe? They all suffer from the same disease. Lockdowns pretty much everywhere. Even Germany, heralded by the UK press as how it ought to be done, now have rising cases, lockdowns, curfwes and and rising internal argument about what to do.
My take after 9 months of this is that to admit the virus is out of control is a moment of rare lucidity from Matt Hancock. Probably purely by chance the truth has slipped out. He's not bright enough to have thought about it. We've had lockdown 1; lockdown 2; tiers 1-3 and now tier 4 etc etc. Yes we have vaccines now available but the logistics of rolling it out - and to whom - mean that it will be months (I fear) until we get any sense of a way ahead.
My take is that more and more of the country will be in tier 4 over the next two months. And as locking down does not really work I can't see anything being better until we vaccinated a lot of people.
Then the bill will arrive. And like a large party of diners who all thought that somebody else would pay, that will be when it gets really ugly......

Apart from Hancock's 'out of control' statement I think the 'Tier 4 until Easter' is the only sensible thing he's has managed to say. As you say we've had various lockdowns and it's clear to see that even if they work as soon as the rules are relaxed the spread increases. This isn't down to Government but simply many people presumably seeing only full lockdown or full freedom, whereas clearly what was required was a relaxation of the rules bit for everyone to still make an effort. Sadly though that does appear to be too much pf an effort for huge chunks of people, hence the next lockdown is always on the horizon. Last week I was startled to see a news report from Australia (a country that, surprisingly appears more than capable of following some rules, certainly more so than the UK) where they were explaining the near eradication of the virus and illustrated it with footage from inside a shopping mall. It appeared 99% of people weren't wearing a mask. Even with the virus almost gone that seems to me to be a bit optimistic. Good luck to them though.

I have to think, being pessimistic, that there's no way out of this if we continue to view hospitalizations and deaths as we do now. There is no evidence to suggest that the vaccines prevent transmissions and if so then (elderly) sick people with multiple health conditions will still be admitted to hospital with Covid and continue to die with Covid, but not necessarily of Covid. We could see a situation where the majority of the population test positive for Covid and the hundreds of deaths that occur daily as part of the natural process will all be recorded as Covid deaths. Which Government is going to say that it will no longer record a death within 28 days of a positive test as a Covid death? Cue press and opposition outrage. I think we'll see a natural fall in the deaths recorded through the summer and then they'll start to pick up next autumn and we'll be back on the cycle of lockdowns through to 2022 and beyond.

Bloody Neil Ferguson again – somehow he’s been re-hired on Nervtwang and he’s been identified as the driving force behind tier 4.
How does this man maintain any semblance of a positive reputation after the decades long catalogue of “ oopsie daisies “ ?.
Don’t forget – soon after using a commodore c64 to model an outcome that bounced us into lockdown, he was diagnosed with Covid. Obviously, so horrified was he at this largely unknown killer disease, he was slinging little Neil up his mistress the second his quarantine expired (a woman with still lived with her husband and two children).
You couldn’t write something as twisted as this.

AS much as I'm frustrated with Boris and his bunch of 'chancers', is there any other group in Westminster who'd do better? That ferrety-faced fuck in charge of the Labour party has been calling for lockdown again and calling for Christmas to be cancelled for weeks, is now saying the opposite!
