The new motah is going to become Mrs Tim's daily driver once we ship the Micra off to her mum so I'm going to get some season-appropriate footwear for the mighty 530.
The only question is should I go for full winters (e.g. Goodyear Ultragrip Performance G1s at £126 each) or the Michelin Crossclimate+ at £111 each?

I’d go for CrossClimate+

Anyone know if those would be accepted by the police in places where winter tyres are obligatory?

Anyone know if those would be accepted by the police in places where winter tyres are obligatory? I believe they have the winter snowflake symbol and therefore meet the requirements of winter tyres.

The next question then is - Should I get a set of winter wheels?
There's a set of 5 on ebay for £250+shipping. Thing is the car has done 190k miles and the MOT is up in December, although there's no obcious reason why it would fail (nasty exhaust smell notwithstanding). I think it only makes sense if the wheels would fit the 320 but not sure how I'd go about finding that out. Any (sensible or helpful) suggestions?

^ IIRC there are basically 2 things to check: Diameter of circle for the fixing bolts, and offset
always presuming that you have the same number of fixing bolts on both cars......

All BMW 5 stud wheels will fit other BMWs. They're all 5x120 with a 68mm centre. I've been looking for a cheeky set of 17s for mine so I can refurbish the 18s and paint them a darker shade. I have a brand new set of Kumho winters sat on the shelf at work just waiting for a car to fit them to. www.wheelfitment.euIt also transpires that Range Rover, Discovery and some Rolls Royce wheels also fit, if you're that way inclined. And also Mini 5 studs

Don't you also need to be wary of the offsets (ie the ET figure)?

You do, but only if you're planning on putting X5 wheels on a 3 Series, or M5 wheels on a 1 Series, etc. I found the wheelfitment website very handy for that.

Ideal compromise as the grip won't go off above 8 deg like full winters and you can leave them on all year if you want. I think they suite our variable climate well. Mine will go on next month.

Thanks everyone.
I might have to swap one over at the weekend because my 320 has the blue painted BMW Performance calipers which are 4 piston rather than single piston like the standard ones (and fitted onto, for example, standard 335ds so proving that the fancy calipers are a worthless upgrade apart from for looks) so there might be clearance issues.

I've been looking at winter wheels and tyres too. Some of the used German dealers have a section at the bottom of their ads which tell you if the wheels fit your car.
My choice seems to be about £2,200 used from Germany or £3,400 new and at a discount from a dealer! Gulp!

That's how I got the winter wheels for both my M135i and the 440i. Think the M135i ones were £900 and the 440i ones were £750, or there or thereabouts. In each case in minty condition with nearly new Pirelli PZeros.

I’m pretty sure they’ve got the snowflake symbol, can check when I’m back home as we’ve got them on the Golfs winter wheels. They get excellent reviews and there are videos online showing how good they are in the snow. With the U.K winters being so variable in temperature, I think they’re the best option as you don’t have to keep hanging on to fit them and then rush to take them off.

The residual value if you keep them immaculate (as you will) is pretty good and the wear rate is probably better than the summers to you can take a set of summer tyres off the cost. The man maths on mine came to a saving!

I said to myself last winter when I got the Q3 that I'd sort out a set of winter tyres (and wheels) by this winter. Guess what...

A few corners and roundabouts in the damp with temperatures below 10 degrees told me very quickly that a kerb or a hedge was a likelihood if I used the summer PZeros through the winter. More man maths - that saves me the excess on my insurance!

The Pirelli and Continentals that went before were more affected, though.

The Pirelli and Continentals that went before were more affected, though. The PS4S is known for having a much wider range of abilities than the PZero and the PZero's low temperature behaviour is really bad whereas the PS4S will maintain a lot more composure in those conditions. My wife's old PZero's were like a set of skis when it snowed - no grip going forward and nearly unstoppable once some speed had been gained (in truth, totally unsafe). However the PZero is a great tyre when it is warmer with masses of grip.

Which is rather odd, because I find the PZeros on my car not marvellous when it is warmer in terms of grip, but extremely impressive on snow and ice.

Remember EVO pointed out the wear rating of the PZeros on the Alfa Giulia QF. I know the ones I put on my 370 were significantly different.

Mine is on P Zero rubber, too. I don't rate them very highly!
