BMW will store the wheels but they don't want to, so I will take them home somehow. Most dealerships say they won't store anymore but a couple I spoke to say they will. It would worry me a bit leaving the wheels lying around at a dealership and hoping they were still there in 5 or 6 months. I have been sideways many times in recent weeks because the PZeros are so useless when it's cold. The car sorts itself out if you keep a bit of throttle on but I feel I am skirting with danger and it's not worth the risk. Most of my driving is done in the morning or towards the end of the day so it is nearly always cold at this time of year. The new house is also at the top of a hill - great for lack of flooding but a nightmare if it snows so I am just getting prepared. That's odd. Maybe it's a London thing but BMW Battersea have always stored mine for me.

Maybe it's a London thing but BMW Battersea have always stored mine for me. The Glasgow dealers both told me they don't store wheels anymore as did Grassicks in Perth and Eastern in Edinburgh. Fairbairns in Kirkcaldy will store the wheels and said they could get them sent through to Glasgow to the dealer who told me they don't store them! After the bad winters 7, 8 and 9 years ago there was a move towards winter wheels and tyres and dealers who would store the wheels but it is likely that the milder winters since have reduced demand significantly and it just isn't worth it. I would also expect a fair number of people who live in the SE also take their cars to Europe for business/skiing etc and therefore must have winter tyres, so demand may be higher.

Maybe. Or they recognise that in London few people will have anywhere to keep a spare set of wheels. I certainly don't.

If you're going to Fairbairns in Kirkcaldy you could probably get your existing wheels removed in seconds by parking 2 minutes away in the street across the dual carriageway from Asda.

I am and apart from driving through maybe 20 years ago I haven't been near the place before. I'll stay away from Asda and enjoy some dealership hospitality.

John, when you go there make sure you go to the roundabout at the end of the dual carriageway rather than coming off at Chapel where the John Smith Business Park is, it's a lot quicker. Beware the exit from the Gallatown roundabout though - they have a temporary sign advising that its slippy and they're not wrong!!

Tony Coton, the ex-Man City goalkeeper tells a good story about coming back from being away on England duty to find his car stolen. It was later found on bricks, but with everything else inside still there, including a boot load of tracksuits and freebies his sponsors had given him and a chequebook. A note on the steering wheel read "‘Sorry TC, we only wanted the wheels. Hope this hasn’t caused you too much trouble ‘cos we’re City fans, good luck mate".

Beware the exit from the Gallatown roundabout though - they have a temporary sign advising that its slippy and they're not wrong!! They certainly aren't wrong - what did they resurface that road with? New wheels and tyres are on and they have made a massive difference. Not only is the grip back near the summer confidence inspiring levels but there is less tyre roar especially at low speeds and the ride has become even more comfortable. On the summer 20" wheels and tyres, you could feel some of the coarseness of the surface at lower speeds and then it smoothed out over about 40mph. On the winter 19's the ride is just smooth full stop. No wonder they supply the car with these wheels as standard in Europe. They don't look as nice and the car looks slightly under-wheeled although that might just be because I am so used to seeing it with the 20's. However the important bit is the grip in low temperatures which is a huge improvement. I'm now looking forward to some snow.

The traction improvements at this time of year are pretty significant and although thankfully I’ve not had to test it, that will translate to much better grip if you have to make an emergency stop. That why it annoys me when people think they’re all about snow..... I don’t get any improvements in ride or road noise on the 19s, but it’s difficult to imagine how it could be better. It does look underwheeled initially, but you get used to it and the 20s look even better when they go back on.

Doesn't really look like an M5 anymore but it now goes, corners and stops like one: And not too much space left for the brake caliper!

I find they take the ever so slightly harsh edge off on the VRS, the big tread blocks slightly softening the ride. Slightly quieter, too. Perhaps it's an engineered in quality thing but my VRS on 18s has a noticeably harsher ride quality than a friend's similar age and mileage Golf GTD on 19s.

It does ride slightly better at low speeds on the 18s with Crossclimates, but there isn’t a noticeable difference on the motorway. The Golf has DCC, which is supposed to make a big difference when you’ve got 19s (I’ve not driven one without), so that’s probably helping. Switching from the Continentals to PS4S is supposed to improve ride quality and road noise even further, but it’s going to be a while before I can justify changing unfortunately.

They are big brakes on the M5, these are mine on 19s as a comparison. They don’t need to be as big, less performance, less weight to stop (slightly!) and it would never be taken on a track.

I've driven to work and it's dirty again! It looks pretty clean to me - I took my brother in law's 530d out for a 10 mile spin yesterday and it came back a lot dirtier than John's M5. That's the joy of country living! I like the new wheels.

And the braking performance is huge: the brakes just suck the car down into the ground without being savage in any way but the downside is I have to watch in my mirror to make sure the cars behind are able to slow down as quickly.

Bought myself some 17s off a 1 Series from good old EBay this morning, should arrive early next week, meaning I can finally dust off the set of Kumho winters I've had stored in the deepest reaches of the warehouse for 3 years and chuck them on. The added bonus being that the alloys already have tyres on and if any of them are any good, I can flog them on to offset the price.
Then I can refurb the 18s and paint them a different colour.
