Who are these dash cam warriors?
I clearly don't drive enough in this country to have encountered one.
I was obviously asked by Vines whether I wanted a new 4-series and as soon as I mentioned that I didn't like the new grille, I could literally hear the salesman wince. H dropped it right away and moved on smoothly to see what else they made that I might prefer. He even asked if I'd like a last-of-the-line 440iGC to replace mine..

Go on YouTube and have a look for something like 'bad driving fails'. Most stuff appears to be from Eastern Europe but there might be some UK ones. They always seem tame after the Russki type ones because it's usually some dick getting really angry because somebody crossed a white line by 3 inches on a roundabout rather than some heroic overtake in a Lada in the face of oncoming HGVs on a snowy road with a 5 foot drop into a field either side

"Russian dash-cam" is a YouTube wormhole that can cost entire weekends if you're not careful. Some pretty grim deaths and miraculous escapes to be found.

Who are these dash cam warriors? I clearly don't drive enough in this country to have encountered one. I have met a few and I think have mentioned them on here - basically people who like to make you do something illegal so that they can film you being a lunatic - such as sitting in the outside lane of a dual carriageway at a good bit less than the speed limit, ignoring the fact that you have been behind them (possibly flashing headlights) for a mile or so waiting for them to pull over - they are just goading you to dare you to undertake and be the subject of their next upload or complaint to the Police. 30s of video seldom tells the whole story but with some descriptive commentary can be made to appear whatever you want it to be.

I didn't know people did that sort of thing. I am duly warned!

Hmmm Are the air outlet indentations at the front of the bonnet actually open or are they fakes?
Also all of the BMWs I've had and seen to date have vertical slats on the grille and these now don't and it looks pretty odd. Finally, what's the small black pimple halfway between the BMW badge and the number plate?

Even Racing-spec colours can't make me overlook that terrible front end. It's not growing on me.

It's not a good time to be a BMW salesman.

It looks to me as if the M division have seen just how horrible the 4 series front is and have done as much as they can to try and disguise the awfulness of the grille. There is no chrome or black surround to the grille - it is just an opening in the nose now. And those horizontal slats (if true) do take a slight edge of it as they match the lines of the number plate and make it look wider. But that really is damning it with faint praise. There was just no need for it in the first place.

Not as bad as the standard 4 series, but still terrible. It's one car that will look better in black, as that should disguise the grille further and hide the scoops in the bonnet.

Even if I won the lottery I cannot not see a BMW I would actually buy new.

It's one car that will look better in black on a moonless night with no artificial lighting available whilst wearing dark-shaded glasses and having cataracts, as that should disguise the grille further and hide the scoops in the bonnet. Fixed your post. These are truly revolting front ends but then we're all getting older so this kind of beaver-faced horror might appeal to the yoof of yesterday who are the aspirational buyers of today.

It reminds me of 70's Pontiac Catalina and lots of other unattractive American iron of the era.

The four door looks good from most angles, just not the front obviously.

There is nothing BMW can do to bring that nose back from ugly. It's camped so far into the ugly corner that they need to re-draw and re-tool to have even half a chance of rescuing this monstrosity.
If the M cars look so poor what chance does a non M 4 series have?

Meh.. I'm kind of over it now. The numberplate breaks it up, much the same way the huge Audi grille has the edge taken off it by a plate. I would have left the M3 with the current saloon's grille and just kept that grille for the 4 series. Apart from that I really like the new 4 series and the 2 door coupe is certainly an improvement of the very anodyne previous version.

You see I don't like the side profile of the new 4-series 2dr very much either. I dislike the door-handle treatment a lot (as I do on the saloon as well) and the rear side window treatment - for me the current 2dr 4-series is immeasurably better-looking. A touch dated these days but just a more elegant and cohesive design. Only the rear of the new car is quite nice but in a very generic way.

I don't think its just the grille, those headlights don't suit the G20. The bonnet looks like a complete mess. Saying that, I like the rest of the M3. Those exhaust tips look mean, and I like the diffuser.
I do wish BMW would produce a more discreet M3. Less tinsel, smaller wheels which are not diamond-cut, and the side grilles deleted. I'm sure BMW would say its all necessary for optimum performance. But nobody complained about the E46 M3, it looked slightly different without looking obvious. That is how M cars started. BMW might say that such a thing wouldn't sell. Which is exactly the same argument they made for years about an M3 Touring!
I think the M5 LCI looks great in its own right, and its so much more cohesive than the M3.

When you look at M Sport kitted 3 and 4 series then I don't think the M versions are much less discreet, which is why the M3 & 4 look so OTT.
I know its just a photoshop but the green M3 in the link looks as if it has 18 inch front wheels and 19s or 20s on the back and it clearly needs the bigger wheel for the visuals.
The M4 side window treatment is pure Nissan GT-R

The M4 side window treatment is pure Nissan GT-R Yes, I really like they've gone that way - it was a favourite part of the GT-R for me. It gives it a sporting aggression that the old 2 door coupe lacked, leaving it looking like something ageing retirees would drive when they couldn't bring themselves to buy the convertible they really wanted.

They're on the BMW configurator
I've just had pointed out to the treatment of the rear wheelarch where it meets the door on the M3. Oh dear!

The new M3 and M4 in person:
Like Racing I really dislike the rear quarters and side rear window design on the M4. It works on a GTR but not on the M4 in my opinion.
The M3 looks better than the M4 but it is far too busy a design to make it attractive to my eyes and nothing short of a transplant would change my view of the front end.

Carwow vid on the 440i now online. 0-60 in 3.8. They've probably cranked up the boost a bit to give it headline performance figures that might make some people overlook the atrocious design. There was a lot of dissent about the silver top lip on the grill on the early E90 3 series from around 2004. in the LCI changes the lip was removed and the car looked miles better. This one might need more than a bit of minor surgery.

My brother in law reckons there are aftermarket front ends available already. Can't remember who he said was doing them but I had definitely heard of them. However, I expect they'll cost an easy couple of thousand including paint and installation which adds straight to the purchase price (assuming they're not ALL on PCP) so a bit of applied man maths could probably get you into something a bit more expensive that isn't ugly in the first place.
