I met that guy from carwow on a flight to Dubai late last year. Good bloke. He’s got a 911 (996 I think) and some super fast mk2 mx5 and I seem to recall an original 500?

There was a time around the E36 and E46 M3s where they were frequently compared with 911s in the magazines. I wouldn't be surprised if the price difference was proportionally that much different even now but they do seem to have become more distant in markets.

Base trim and castors top left!

The boggo spec one look hilarious. I don't think that the grille will be accepted like Bangle's designs did. I mean, people still hate Bangle's designs! But one can't deny the influence he had in the industry. A coupe just isn't supposed to look like that. The grille might work on an X5 or X7, but not on a coupe. Interesting what Michael said about the E46 and E36 being compared to 911's. The M440i is quite a bit more than the M340i this time. I can see the M4 being a 70k car, which won't be that far off a base 992. The M4 Comp, CS and GTS really will push it into 911 territory.

The boggo spec one look hilarious. It really does, doesn't it? Goodness me what a monstrosity. I gather BMW's chief designer is called Domagoj Dukec. I may start calling him Dog's Dinner from now on.

That car looks so unbelievably bad. How could any designer think that was attractive.
The current M4 Comp is an easy £70K without adding much in extras so I reckon a reasonable spec new M4 will be £75K+. We will then have to add the 10% import duty taking it well over £80K. Whether there are enough people with that kind of money combined with sufficient deficiency of sight or taste to ignore that grill is something BMW's sales figures are going to find out very soon. Personally I think they have finally pushed the grill beyond acceptable: my daughter who always wanted a RWD 1 series thinks the new 1 series is a total joke, so in our household, both ends of the car buying age spectrum think BMW have turned up the wrong road design wise.

I know that people always say the poverty spec wheels are only there to encourage buyers to splash out on more expensive ones but if you have a look for used 5 series there are a surprising number of 520d SE saloons that have what appear to be exactly the same wheels as those above. People are still more attracted to the badge than the style.

They look so bloated and heavy. Before the brand hit the wall, Pontiac had regular falling-outs with BMW about grilles and now they're gone it seems it was BMW moving onto their territory all along.

None are nice but the base trim one in dark colour with chrome grille looks better than the others, but that's like saying which mouldy apple is most appetising on the morning after a big session.

It was one of the first E34s on an F-plate, and it was a 520i SE, back when 20i indicated a 2.0 straight six and SE meant more toys, not less. But it had steel wheels with hubcaps. Actually managed to find a picture of it, albeit not showing the wheels:

Has anyone looked at the BMW website?
Firstly, it says "The new 4 series coupe - an undeniable vision" (True, but not in a good way!)
Then in Highlights, Number 1 is a picture of the grille with the words "Sign of Greatness", click on that and you get "With the impressive new vertical grille, which features an elegant mesh design...etc"

But I bet writing nice stuff about the new 4 series was more than tough for a lot of the PR / marketing people at BMW. They'll all probably needs years off with PTSD after having to write that guff.

According to the designer, the 4 is about "showing off".

I usually dwell on BMW ads and maybe click through a few links but recently the 4 series ones just get deleted or passed by: it is a complete turn off for me and it is infecting the whole brand.

I found this quite interesting - a proper poke around the new car. There are some nice elements but overall I can’t see me moving onto one after my time with the 440i.

I'll wait till the disguise comes off to really go to town on it but that looks like a smaller M8 and that ain't a complement.

If it could be in that colour scheme so most of the horror is disguised it'll be a big seller.

The M4 looks okay, apart from the hideous grille.
Glad that BMW are moving back to effectively the 3-Series for their GT3 racing car. Its the 3 that has bought them so much success, either in DTM, BTCC or sportscars. The M6 and M8 were just too big and didn't have the heritage.

I have been bombarded with e-mails from BMW over the past couple of days re the new 4 Series so at lunchtime I relented and had a look, configuring a car to my liking (grill and rear quarters excepted) - "my" M440i is coming out at over £64K!
However slightly more worrying for everyone on the road is this built in feature which I have taken word for word from the product description:
BMW Drive Recorder
The Drive Recorder allows you to record a video from the vehicle environment and play it back on the central Control Display or via USB export also on your device. Important vehicle information such as speed and GPS position are stored synchronously with the video. The Drive Recorder consists of the Event recorder and the Crash recorder. The Event recorder enables the recording of special driving situations or special events. With the Crash recorder, if the sensors in the vehicle detect an accident, the recorder automatically triggers the recording to document the accident. In addition, you can also start a recording manually by pressing a button and thus record a specific traffic situation in the image. Up to ten videos of 40s length can be recorded (the time settings before and after triggering can be adjusted to a maximum of 20s). Heavy accidents with hard disc damages are owing to circumstances where videos may not be recorded or saved. Only available with Parking Assistant Plus.
I know if you f*** up on the road you are going to get punished but if this kind of thing goes in to every car we are really going to play in to the hands of the dashcam warriors who frequently do what they can to provoke a reaction from someone they have taken a dislike to. Big brother isn't just looking over your shoulder, he is now pulling your strings!

Isn’t the Drive Recorder just a built in dash cam? It makes sense as all the kit is there and if you want a dash cam then you don’t have to have something stuck to the windows? Although I think the dash cam warriors love having them on display.....
