I actually think the whole thing looks like a bad knock-off of the current Audi A5 coupe, just with a different corporate monster schnozz and less well-executed surfacing. That's kind-of my thinking too

Don’t the bloated rear arches make the rear wheel look small? You're right. The extra metal above the rear arches do not do the design any favours. Especially as they've taken metal away above the front wheels. I bet the rear feels a lot smaller to sit in with less glass too.

If we are comparing, somebody mocked this up:

The shape of the C pillar has reminded me for a while of something else and that picture has made me realise it’s the Nissan GTR.

The positives are hard to find. So I'll try. Great choice of engines and outputs, still the option of a petrol six and diesel sixes. Nice colours (that you have to pay more for). Probably great to drive. BMW should offer a traditional grille for those who want it. The F32 never sold well in China, Coupe's just don't. The bulk of sales are in Europe and America, and people buy a Coupe for the looks...good job with the 4!

I think the rear quarter looks a bit bloated (and the wheels look small) because the rear window line rises up. I think it will turn a proper 4 seater into an occasional 4 seater and I know my daughter wouldn't be too happy in the back for any length of time with such a small window.

It looks worse every time!
Ignoring the grille itself what the hell is going on with the vents below the headlights (vertical and horizontal lines everywhere) and the big slot below and around the bottom of the grille?

It has the makings of a drop dead gorgeous motor, all they have to do is drop the body and start again from scratch.

That JB Cars rendering looks so much better than the real thing Perhaps BMW should contract out their design work? Goodness knows, the in-house team are not exactly doing a good job at the moment.

They are probably controlled by a committee which guarantees you only end up with a solution that no-one really wants.

Perhaps BMW should contract out their design work? Goodness knows, the in-house team are not exactly doing a good job at the moment. They are probably controlled by a committee which guarantees you only end up with a solution that no-one really wants. Apparently that was the case in the pre-Bangle era but not since then. Before then the Manufacturing Engineers and accountants had the most sway over design and usually went for the easiest and cheapest option.

You're right. The extra metal above the rear arches do not do the design any favours. Especially as they've taken metal away above the front wheels. I bet the rear feels a lot smaller to sit in with less glass too. Aside from anything else the lack of a continuous waist line makes the design look unresolved compared to it's predecessor. Definitely a bit of a bloater in that respect but will probably mean the convertible looks great when the roof line is gone. I think we'll all think the high spec models look great when we see boggo-spec leased ones all over the place.

Not really doing themselves any favours. That green one in the other thread could just increase in price by £10k looking at this picture of its replacement.

The grey one from the Pistonheads story appears to have a deeper grille than the standard ones in this thread.

The M3 will have the deep grille. They've given the coupe face to the M3 for the last two generations, so the expectation is that the same will happen here.

That Pistonheads image looks Photoshopped to me. The right hand grille showing a bit too much use of the smudge tool.

The grille has no frame either, chrome or black bits both missing. Also, no flared rear arches, which seems odd.

So, almost 54k for an M440i. The M2 Competition almost looks like good value in comparison. A proper M car, and without that grille. Less depreciation as well.

The latest edition of CAR mag dropped on my mat this morning. I haven't opened it but according to the front cover the new M4 is going to be the 911s nemesis Give me a break. There's no way any car mag will favourably compare a saloon based, front engined coupe with the mighty 911, especially as the M4 will be half the price after discount. They're simply not in the same market and that's before you take looks into account.

That said when the E46 M3 came along it was compared to (favourably) the contemporary 996, but I agree: not really the same thing. A Golf R is as quick as a 911 in most situations but no one's ever oo-ing and err-ing over one or the other
