From the B Pillar back the new 4 looks like the Nissan GT-R, a 12 (?) year old design.

The old E92 isn't even an MSport which would make the contrast between the two more marked.
As Tim says the B pillar backwards is very GT-R. Maybe the designer has always had a soft spot for the GT-R and just wanted to get that into his design somewhere. Perhaps the grill is an attempt to distract attention from that fact. Either way, he failed.......Big Time.

It loses so much BMWness by dropping that crease along the side. It’s a desperate looking car.

Agreed. I noticed that the forthcoming 4GC/i4 looks like it will be improved by having flush door handles harking back to the sort last seen on the E36/39 and more weight/glazing around the 3/4s.
But that gopping snout remains.
