Fish did this to me 2 days ago. Mums wheelchair car went up from £300 to £370. It’s a 14 year old Renault kangoo. We use it about once a month and 500 miles a year . When I ignored the renewal letter , they rang me and I said bollocks to it I will sell the car and just use taxis . He then magically came back and said £290 . I said out of principal I would normally tell you to do one and go with someone else , but there’s pretty much no one else that can get near the price so I’ve reluctantly gone with it . Mum doesn’t really like using taxis anyway and she was happy to pay £290

I just accept that most insurance companies give you a first year introductory discount and revert to their normal price for year 2. They accept some will stay through inertia and some (like me) will move again.

Aviva can naff off. £1000. Quite surprised at that - they've been there or thereabouts for me for a few years now, and were seriously cheaper for the Legacy than anyone else I found, even Admiral and some of the "specialist" insurers.

A haggling session on the phone netted me an £86 reduction - about 11% - which saw the 500 drop back down to pretty much what we paid last year, but the GC is still 16% up on last year.
Grumble.
I shall have to go and compare some meerkats, which is always a tedious exercise.

The girl on the phone also ran an extraordinary argument which fully failed to make any coherent sense to me:
1. For new insurance contracts, adding a named driver typically reduces the premium (particularly if you are a man adding a woman).
2. Whereas she claimed that for renewals, a named driver actually pushes the price up, because they assess on the risk of two drivers (how that distinction arises versus a new contract is anyone's guess) and so, for example, having my wife as named driver on the GC actually made the policy 15% more expensive!

Taken individually each of those statements make sense - put them together and your head explodes.

Well quite. And given my day job includes being paid to make sense of convoluted contractual provisions, it takes quite a lot to make my head explode.

That's less than I am paying for the Kuga! Just had renewals through last weekend and went in to discuss with the broker.... over £500 for the Kuga for the next 12 months. The Captur has gone up significantly from just over £300 to just over £400, mainly becasue it's my wife who is the main user and she now has 6 points that they take into account (3 are now over 3 years old but insurers "assess" them for 5 years).
Am no longer looking at an X1 if a new job offer materialises, but at something cheaper to insure IF I decide to change the Kuga

Just got my renewal through and I am very pleasantly surprised: Yup, you are paying less for the M5 than I pay for the 440i!
By about £100. Not pleased, but I just couldn't get it any lower unless I took my wife off the insurance.

Doesn't you wife on the insurance lower it? It certainly does for me.

I reckon so. Just paid it in case they change their mind.

As an aside, is it just me that hates the word "expiration"? Smacks far too much of an a Murcanism to me, I detest it! The word is, EXPIRY!!!

I just got my renewal through from Admiral and its £30 less than last year at £950. That doesn't seem unreasonable for 5 cars but I'll still try to reduce it a bit.

That does sound pretty good for 5 cars but I suppose you have to remember that you can only drive a maximum of 2 at any time between you, so it's really just fire and theft on the other 3 and that is normally about £100/£150 a year.

Watching Martin Lewis’ money show earlier, he was talking about car insurance and it was quite interesting what he was saying about what timeframe to start looking around for new quotes . Might help save a few quid.

Interesting. I am probably arranging mine a few days too early, but no real gripes otherwise!

Those nice people at Admiral have emailed to say that due to the lockdown and the significant reduction in road traffic they're issuing everyone a refund of £25 per car insured. That's a nice £125 heading my way then, I might go out for a drive just to spend some of it!

5 minutes on a comparison website should get you some numbers and then go back to them and let them price match.
