TG last night. 72 grand for a Renault! Who is the target audience for a 5 door hot hatch with no need for rear doors (As there are no seats)? It's an odd spec as well - CC brakes, but only up front, and £12k worth of carbon wheels. I have a lot of experience with carbon wheels and they are a bloody nightmare. Not only do you have to be extra careful mounting tyres to them*, they are an absolute slag to repair and are very, very prone to chipping when faced with normal roads. Even on the track, they can be trouble - if you drop off the edge of a kerb or hit an apex badly, it's time for an expensive repair job. It's not like an alloy wheel where you can weld up a crack and heat the body to make it more malleable and force it back round - if you crack a carbon wheel it's goodnight Vienna. *You've all seen your average tyre fitter, they struggle to breathe and talk at the same time. Not a chance I'd want one mounting tyres to a set of wheels tht cost more than a supermini. Agree with you on the price, madness. If you order the carbon wheels, you get a set of normal ones that fit onto the shelf where the rear seats would be, so they can be for use on the track only. Or when it’s parked up somewhere.

I think we should applaud Renault for creating the car, imagine how hard a sell that was to the board. We bitch and moan about the current car scene and then when something different comes out we moan again. Yes the pricing is huge but then I and probably all of us here aren't the target market given the limited numbers.

Notice how there was no mention of how it was to drive on the road. Looking at how flat it cornered and the way the suspension moved, I would suggest it would be unbearable on anything other than smooth tarmac. £72k for what is pretty much a track only car is hard going, you could get all manner of Caterhams, Westfields, Atoms and even an early Mono for that and the Megane wouldn't see which way any of them went. A 5 door hatch is a very odd starting point for a track focussed machine, even with the weight loss (which could be more if they had used a 3 door shell, if it existed) - they're starting from a point of compromise.
But, the usual Nurburgerkingringsting weapons will be out in force to praise the lap time.

I don't think there is a 3 door Megane - hence the redundant rear doors. Hasn't the Golf gone the same way? I think all 3 door hatches are on the way out.

Fiesta is one of the few still hanging on. Funnily enough I was following one of them down the A19 this morning and it caught fire. By the time it pulled up it was well away. I would have stopped but Greggs opens at 8am and I wanted to be first in the queue.

I see your point Iain but would also concur with Ed that we can at least give Renault some praise for having the balls to make it so extreme. Bear in mind that that is the press car so it will have all the pricy options but a lot probably won’t and those that do will be much more of a collectors item in 20 years than a mk7 Golf R will be. It’s not going to sell huge numbers but that isn’t the point. It’s a halo car that as a daily driver is as pointless as the Ford RS200 or the Audi Quattro Sport were in their day. I’d say it’s a special car for all the special options rather than in spite of them.

I suspect that, even at £72k, they will not be making any money on them.

Renault UK took 250 of them and, according to EVO, had to hand 100 back because they couldn't sell them. Fast forward to now and they're in demand!

The RS200 and ur quattro were homologation specials and had to be built to satisfy Group B rules though. I mean, fair play to Renault for doing it, but I wonder about the mental state of anyone who pays for one with their own money.
Saying that, they'll likely be bought by members of the cocoon shiny car crew and bundled into an hermetically sealed garage, polished daily and have its paint depth measured fastidiously.

The David Baddiel programme about Holocaust deniers was very interesting.

Certainly was, and interesting do see someone like David Baddiel get so wound up by the denier he met.
I have a colleague whos a flat earther, is into every conspiracy going, the CIA was responsible for 9/11, we never went to the moon, theres no such thing as gravity and of course 6million were never murdered by the Nazis. Each one gets my blood boiling and I really struggle to have any sensible debate. What is it with these views that just makes you lose your cool.

What's infuriating about such people is that they seem to me to have a pre-formed view and cling to anything that they feel supports it, whilst disparaging any quantity of troublesome facts.

Great when the car is new, not so much when it's used and worth 5-6k and a single damper is £1500...

I have a colleague whos a flat earther, If they go to the coast where you can see the curvature of the earth across the horizon, how do they account for that and a whole load of other startlingly obvious matters?

How do they explain why everything else in space is spherical?

It's nonsense that the earth is flat.
It's well known that it's a flat disc carried on the backs of four elephants standing on the shell of a a giant turtle as it "swims" through space.

How do they explain why everything else in space is spherical? Apparently space doesn't exist, and the moon and sun are only 32 miles across.
No point in arguing with a dedicated and determined fuckwit. That said, I wouldn't deal with anyone in a professional capacity who held such a view.

Apparently the phenomenon I describe is 'motivated reasoning'. Waaay too polite a term!

There was a great documentary on Netflix about the flat earthers.
Apparently the earth is square, at the sides are massive ice floes that stop the oceans falling off the side and the sun and moon are on some sort of track that allows them to appear to circle the earth while being on a flat trajectory. I believe there was a scale model that they used to show it!
It really came across as a bunch of gullible idiots being misled by a charismatic (it's all relative) attention seeker.
I'd recommend it for watching as it was quite funny.

Nicely back on the TV track there, Tim! Apparently Freddie Flintstone off Top Gear is a flat earther, staying on topic for two posts in a row.

Anyone watched any of The Stranger on Netflix? There's something very familiar about parts of it so it was a surprise to see it's a 2020 production. Maybe it's just because I've read a few Harlan Coben books? I think there may have been some situations that were familiar from something like Luther as well. How's that for a hat-trick Simon?

Ah yes, the 182 Trophy, with the remote reservoir dampers that were exposed to the elements in the wheel well and rusted for fun. Oddly, I nearly bought one, but opted for the 172 Cup instead and quite glad I did when the rear dampers needed replacing and only cost me £50 a corner.

You’d never buy new dampers for them anyway . people get them rebuilt by someone like BG motorsport for £500 a pair . Bovingdon and metcalfe have both done articles/videos on the process of having theirs done
When I bought the clio off you , a trophy was exactly double the cost . I couldn’t justify double. A better car, but not that much better I doubt

Mrs P has watched all of the Harlan Coben TV series' and said the Stranger was the worst of the three. She thinks the Five was the best (only one I've seen), followed by the one with Dexter in it and then the Stranger.
