Emperor, the death of kings by Conn Iggulden. The young Julius Caesar and Brutus apparently friends. No idea how the locations and events mesh but it seems quite close from memory of history lessons.
A good read, flows quite nicely.

Agreed. Green Wing was hysterically funny. It’s from a similar time to Black Books which also has Tamsin Greig in it and is also well worth a watch if you didn’t see it. I have these (and Spaced), all 3 are excellent, though my wife sometimes is confused by the humour (not her fault, she's Canadian).

I know what you mean, there were moments I liked but overall couldn't get into it. My hidden comedy gems are Early Doors and Still Game (not so hidden if you're north of the border). From a US perspective, Silicon Valley is great.

An evening with Machine Head in Lausanne No support bands, just 2 and half hours of supreme metal, jaw dropping command of their instruments and epic song writing. Considering these guys are 50, I don't know where they get the energy, I was fooked just watching and I blew my throat out singing along. The new album is divisive but they still kill it live and make me want to jump around and break stuff. Called it a day apparently.

The alter bridge live cd of their royal Albert hall concert with the parallax ochestra is stunning if you like AB.

Not quite. 2 members are leaving after this tour run (The 2 best members as well - guitarist Phil Demmel and drummer Dave McClain).
Robb Flynn has turned Machine Head into a farce, sadly. He's also turned into a whiny little girl on social media. I genuine think this will be the actual end of Machine head - this is the longest running, most stable line up there has ever been, but Robb's Axl Rose/Dave Mustaine attitude to band leadership has clearly taken its toll. Still, nearly 30 years is a longer career than most bands get, so if it is the end then it's been a good run and at least I got to see them live.

He had announced the end of the band when I posted that, but has since retracted it/moved the goalposts. Not that I really care...

Latest book I’ve been reading is Palin’s latest ‘Erebus’. I’m really rather enjoying it so far and hadn’t realised quite what the ship achieved. Well worth a read.

We went to see First Man last night. The reviews said it was "OK". We thought it was a fantastic film. Perhaps we enjoyed it so much as we remember the moon landings - getting up in the middle of the night to sit in front of the TV and watch history being made.

Interesting choices in Flintof and McGuiness to replace MLB on top gear. A shame Rory not going to be as prominent..he seemed to be growing into the role

Freddie’s been a good foil for James Corden on A League of Their Own so I think he’ll be a good co-host. Is Chris Harris staying on?

Not sure how it's going to pan out. Paddy is funny on Celeb Juice and back in the day with Peter Kay, but he's little more than a professional Bolton-ite. Flintoff is a Flat Earth nutter, enough said. Not sure how much experience or knowledge of cars the 2 of them have, not that that matters for TG as it's pretty much just cocking around with cars in between. Still can't be doing with Harris. He's the living embodiment of Queef.

Will this be for the next series or the one after? Presumably they're filming one currently which will be the last with MlB?

I'm not sure how this will work out.
Looks like the BBC are going back top three middle aged blokes on the principle that it worked before so will be bound to work again. Yeah, right... Clarkson, May and Hammond really did know about cars and Clarkson and May had earned their dues as car journalists and Hammond as a radio broadcaster, plus it was the chemistry between the three of them that added to that . Paddy - I've never heard of him before this - and Flintoff and both "entertainers" (well, they think they are) and so it'll just be two guys trying to be funny reading a script. At least in the last series, Harris and MLB seemed to have some chemistry going and actual real banter at times. Which I think is where Rory Reid fell from grace - he didn't seem to have that ability so much.

Much as I lament the loss of the Clarkson days, any programme that talks about cars is OK with me. Can't stand Paddy's infantile humour though - maybe he will up his game from that dating show.

"Let the Stig see the gig..."

As part of my 50th birthday to treat myself I splurged on some new guitar stuff,a Hughes and kettner GrandMeister deluxe with an orange 1x12 cab. Basically it’s a tube amp but with midi programming so you get the quality of tube tone and the convenience of a digital multi effects pedal.
Got the new slash album but it’s very repetitive ,also got the Alter bridge at the royal Albert hall with orchestra cd which is great, especially ‘words darker than’ .

Alice In Chains touring the UK next year. I say touring, it's 3 dates, all arenas, the nearest to me being Birmingham. I'm more of a club venue kind of guy - arenas are a bit too open and lose the intimacy. I like being mere feet away from the band and the whole notion of sitting down at a gig makes no sense to me at all. I like to move around, dance a little, wander off for a beer if I feel like it. £58 a ticket as well, so I have some big thinking to do. AIC are one of my favourite bands and I would really like to see them again, especially as they have released 2 corking albums since the last time I saw them.

Last night - new series of Bitchin Rides - shame we didn't see the end result - I've loved pretty much every car they've built and the standards they build to are stunning. I can't imagine how much money their customers spend.
