The only criticism I have so far is the Sat Nav, which looks good but is pretty terrible at choosing the best route....so I use Waze which solves that problem but doesn’t look as good not the screen and can’t be displayed in the dials.Yep: that was my main criticism of the Golf hire car we had using Apple Maps. Nice fancy smart dash that should be able to take whatever feed you send it to at least one section.

Good to hear you're enjoying the Golf Martin. In many ways the R would be the perfect winter wheels to go alongside the GT4 but they're still big money and many look a bit tatty at the bottom end of the market. They are holding their money well, You’d be able to find a non tatty older one I’m sure but a lot are fairly basic spec. You could just get Porsche winter wheels, it would be a lot cheaper. I do a number of track days in the winter because its cheaper so couldn't be bothered to keep switching and on the odd nice day I'd be cursing myself for not being on cup 2's

It goes back in 12m but with CO2 ratings for all cars being up in the air due to WLTP it’s difficult to know what I’ll be looking at. The new rating system even adds extra grams for added equipment so a well specced model may have a much higher tax band than a model with less toys but the same engine. Most popular choice amongst my colleagues is the Ionic as it’s still 88g. Just not sure I can bring myself to do it. 😩 There must be a better option....at least you don’t have to decide now. Golf 8 will be out by then, but depends on the engine tech, mild hybrid would help. I don’t believe the Golf 8 will be available in the uk until 2020. Tbh I’ll have a proper think nearer the spring when I’ll know more about any new models, what WLTP has done to emission figures and, of course, what effect Brexit has on the cost and availability of new cars from overseas.

Now, if you really want a Golf R with some performance...... I can understand someone of 75 settling on a Golf for their car, I can sort-of-understand going for a Golf R instead of a "plain" version, but.......

Good for him, though suggesting that he 'built it' is perhaps stretching things.

I've never got my trousers dirty on the exhaust while leaning into the M5, or the Nissan 370 for that matter. However, I have got them dirty from leaning on the bumper to retrieve things from the furthest depths of the boot. That applies to ALL cars though.

Got a couple of milestones passed today, the first one is that we've had the Golf for 6 months today. It doesn't feel that long.
Total mileage has just passed 6,000 and I've done about 4,000 of those, partly due to us using it at the weekends if we're staying local but mainly because the plan was to try and get a slightly better mileage balance between the two cars. That's not working out quite as I'd expected because my business mileage has increased significantly and I'm doing more longer journey. Whilst the fuel cost is slightly better on the Golf, I only get 15p vs 22p per mile and it's much better than I'd expected on the motorway but some way behind the BMW.
Not much else to say that I haven't already, but.... I still really enjoy driving it, it's an excellent all rounder, brilliant at this time of year, no rattles or issues (yet) and most importantly, Lindsay loves it.
Great car.

Do you mean that the BMW is more economical on the motorway than the Golf, or more comfortable (or both)? Motorway economy is pretty much the same, but my employer gives me 15p a mile for the Golf and 22p for the BMW. The Golf is a lot more comfortable than you'd expect a hot hatch to be on the motorway, thanks in part to the Adaptive dampers, but the BMW is in another league.

What does that equate to in required MPG so your not subbing the company to do your job for both cars?

What does that equate to in required MPG so your not subbing the company to do your job for both cars? Assuming £1.25/litre, the Golf needs to do 38mpg and the BMW 26mpg. Over the time I've had them, the Golf has achieved 33.4 and the BMW 31.5. I was paying about £1.35 a couple of months ago, which would change the number to 41/28mpg. Based on the split usage, I'm OK and that's before I take into account the savings I make by ensuring I'm working in Swindon on the Friday I collect the kids (saves £70-80 a month) and my business mileage % increasing fairly significantly.

My R32 on winter tyres would go anywhere. I once drove to work in a blizzard and there were cars abandoned everywhere so I had to zig zag along the road, but I got there fine. It rained later and all the snow had gone by the morning!

Lindsay got to drive it in light snow and said it was great, but I didn't get to unfortunately.
It's just gone over 7,000 miles and definitely feels like it's loosened up and it getting even quicker. Theres a road test of a 310hp R with DSG (so same spec as ours) in Auto Express this week and they did 0-60 in 4.3s and 30-70 in 4.0s, not too shabby, especially in cold and slightly damp conditions.

I have Pirelli All Seasons on the BMW and they have been excellent as well.

I didn’t think anyone would ever read Autoexpress so it wouldn’t be a spoiler!
Read the Autocar review, won’t spoil it but the Golf is better suited to what I need from a second car.

I have Pirelli All Seasons on the BMW and they have been excellent as well. 17c yesterday and happy with the grip/traction, no issue with full bore exits from roundabouts. The Crossclimate+ is an excellent tyre. Weather is very variable, had to scrape ice off the windows this morning!
