Fabulous ,I came so close to buying one when I got the bm,needing an estate though swayed it as in estate form it’s a fugly thing. Saw an estate R yesterday as it happens, in the same colour as Martins; I thought it looked pretty good actually. Only saw it briefly as it fired past me at 100+ leptons mind you!!

I am another fan of the R estate. Someone used to park a blue one in our office car park and it looked great. If I didn't need the space of a full size estate it would be high on my list.

Not my cup of tea, but looks good in that colour. Thought it would be right up your street blarno (if it was a manual)
I prefer my hot hatches small, light and with few fripperies. Granted, they don't really exist any more.
The only Golfs that have ever turned my head were the Mk1 GTi and the Mk3 VR6.

I’m sure Lindsay has been saving business miles, she hasn’t used the BMW in the last month but she’s out 3 days this week.
Just received a text which started “Bloody Love this car...”. Happy wife and all that plus it’s not run in so she’s not able to drive it properly.
I’m getting regular updates on all the things she likes, This mornings discovery is that the start/stop uses the voodo cruise system to fire it back up as the car in front moves away
I should get a chance to drive it properly soon and get it run in quickly.

Up! GTi is well on my radar . Not the fastest, but £13k and as close as you’ll get to an old skool hot hatch these days

Without watching that I presume that the BMW is the favoured one? After all the ability to go sideways in a cloud of Queefish tyre smoke is the number 1 consideration.
It's not the Audi is it....

I’ve not driven the RS3, went to look at one but wasn’t wowed by it (I know it’s all about the engine) and it’s a rediculous amount of money for a small hatchback when you select it right, no matter how quick it is. I don’t like the way the Sportback looks either, would have to be a saloon.
I did drive the M240i, lovely engine (a touch quiet) but doesn’t flow down the road well at all and you have to back off when you want to keep pushing on and it felt like it was about to let go on a regular basis, which isn’t fun to me on an everyday hatchback.

And that seems to encapsulate the M v Aplina argument in one phrase. I'm not sure that feeling like it is about to let is acceptable on any everyday use car. Hatchback or not.

I've lived with that feeling (in the wet) for the past 2 1/2 years with the Nissan and it's not a pleasant one. Clearly my credentials as a 'Hand' are severely lacking.
It's one of the reasons that when looking to upgrade the 320 I've focussed more on 335ds (only available in 4wd) than 340is (rwd only).

The grip from the 4WD on the 35D is quite a revelation having come from a powerful RWD car. I know that in the dry there isn't much in it except in slow speed corners but given that we live in a country where it is wet about 1 out of 2 days on average, the 4WD is fantastic and never leaves you with that nervous will it/won't it feeling. Wet roundabout exits are fantastic for dispensing with the idiot stuck to your tail. I can induce a bit of understeer on a quick corner entry which just requires a slight lift followed by full throttle and the nose just tucks in with the rear kicking you down the road. I have a client who has just bought an ex demo RS5 so I am looking forward to seeing what that's like when I eventually get an opportunity.

I’ve only had one proper wet road drive in the 7, 50% throttle was about all you could go for on roundabout exits without the TC light flashing. That’s still pretty quick though and traction fine once you’re well under way and it is superb in the dry. Still much too early to be testing traction in the Golf.

Actually, in the real world the Audi probably is best if you ignore initial cost and, presumably, fuel economy. I mean, how many normal drivers actually try to drift their BMW - probably less than 1% - so that rules it out as a contender given that its clearly very traction limited in normal UK conditions. So that leaves the 2 4wd cars and, as I said, ignoring cost then why wouldn't you go for one with a characterful 5 pot and an extra 90 odd BHP?

Ignoring the cost, the engine would probably compensate for the looks and the running costs in a direct comparison. But with a similar spec to our R (the RS3 can’t be had with memory seats, which was an essential option), the net price is £13,000 more, or nearly 40%. That’s a lot and if I was spending close to £50k, it wouldn’t be on a fast A3.

The Golf is now nicely run in at around 1,500 miles so I’m able to enjoy it properly. It still impresses with a really good ride and it’s quick in a straight line (doesn’t have the shove of the 750 though), but I’m enjoying the handling more and more. As I said in another thread, it feels quite predictable, but that just means you can push it a bit harder and it really flies across county. It flows down a twisty road, corners with hardly any roll and despite the steering not being as great as it was in the Boxster, it does have a nice feel and I like the way it feels when you enter a corner and fire out the other side.
I like the individual mode, which I’ve set up to have the middle setting on the suspension, the fake sound in Eco (pretty much off), gearbox in normal (pulling the lever back puts it in sport mode if wanted and the throttle / exhaust / steering / voodoo cruise / headlights all in sport. When I’m on the motorway I switch to comfort which settles everything down nicely.
Really pleased we went for the Dynaudio upgrade, it’s a bargain at £550
The only criticism I have so far is the Sat Nav, which looks good but is pretty terrible at choosing the best route....so I use Waze which solves that problem but doesn’t look as good not the screen and can’t be displayed in the dials.
Other than that it’s a cracking car.

My blue motion estate is probably one of the easiest and most satisfying cars I’ve had to drive for some years (probably since the Civic Vtec I had as my first company car). The lightness of the 3cyl TSI compared to the diesel lumps I had in previous cars makes for such an eager front end. I can well imagine the combination of the extra power and 4wd you enjoy only adds to that especially as the 2.0ltr TSI is really not a heavy engine either. Agree re the sat nav, I’ve only got basic Discover Nav and it’s not particularly brilliant at picking up the best route. I just check Google maps before setting off as it’s much more accurate.

It goes back in 12m but with CO2 ratings for all cars being up in the air due to WLTP it’s difficult to know what I’ll be looking at. The new rating system even adds extra grams for added equipment so a well specced model may have a much higher tax band than a model with less toys but the same engine. Most popular choice amongst my colleagues is the Ionic as it’s still 88g. Just not sure I can bring myself to do it. 😩

The new tax system is bloody stupid. That's a polite way to describe it. Somebody should have told the Treasury that "rich" people - if buying a car over £40k makes you rich then WTAF - already pay more tax when they buy a car. It's called VAT you cretins. This was nothing more than a stealth tax. Company car buyers are not specifically affected by it (as far as I am aware, although I know he did muck about with the bands, so they may have suffered in other ways). The real hit was on private buyers, who are royally screwed. And of course like all allowance limits, the £40k has never been increased since it was introduced, causing tax creep to add insult to injury. Useless fucking bastards to the lot of them. There is a big step up in monthly cost on our car list for anything over £40k eg £60pcm more for an outlander 4hs over a 4h .list difference isnt great but tipped over £40k

Golf 8 will be out by then, but depends on the engine tech, mild hybrid would help.

They are holding their money well, You’d be able to find a non tatty older one I’m sure but a lot are fairly basic spec. You could just get Porsche winter wheels, it would be a lot cheaper.
