[quote author=" Alex" source="/post/83894/thread" timestamp="1637944462" Lastly I personally feel more needs to be done to improve public compassion for these people. The rhetoric in a lot of the media in this country is incredibly dehumanising and a lot of the usual suspects whipping up such hatred were only a few weeks ago moaning about the lack of foreigners coming over to help us with the harvest. Well here's a ready workforce who are desperate to come here and work to make a better life for themselves. [/quote] Leaving aside the rest of it for now I think this is what really needs to be highlighted here. It is easy for us to condemn from the comfort of our UK lifestyle, where a shortage of a particular flavour of Walkers crisps makes the headlines, but we have to remember that real fathers, mothers, sons and daughters are in the midst of this horrific situation and using them as political pawns in a cross-channel slanging match is abhorrent.

To me, the combo in photo above looks superb and would definitely be my choice.

Back home now. It has been an absolutely knackering, but thoroughly enjoyable four days. I got to meet a lot of interesting people and spend most of the weekend talking old cars. After the show, during break-down, the last thing you want is to be stuck in a log jam of cars so, when the big roller door was opened it was a case of 'gentleman start your engines' and it was was like an old style Le Mans start with people rushing towards cars and racing towards the door. We had vintage Bugatti's, V8 Jensens and Porsches and Bentleys thundering past. Much entertainment was had when this was started and extravagantly warmed up before heading to the door: I did get to drive this around the hall. It is a famous Alvis team race car from 1922 We are already talking about next year's stand and I think I shall be very much involved with organising that.

Great pictures Andy. A shame I managed to miss you all.
It has been another busy day here today, although not as busy as the previous two.

A yellow Interceptor. I think I may go and have a little crisis. Not just any Interceptor, but an FF. It is really rather nice.

Hope you've got tea and biscuits ready for when we stop by. I do have a business meeting at 2:00, so avoid that time if you can.

A previous boss ordered a 3.0 V6 Discovery and was concerned at its lack of effortless progress compared to his old RRS. It turned out they had supplied a four cylinder Discovery, so that went back, he cancelled the order and kept the RRS.

I did look up the cost to hire a Maserati Lavante through a specialist and very quickly changed my mind. Over £3,000 for the week was somewhat over budget...

We shall probably be flying BA from LHR to Pisa, so I might just go for a combined flight and car deal.

I expect there are some on here with some recent experience. The last time I hired a car in Italy was in 2005, but we are possibly going to Tuscany in April next year and I am researching the options. Any advice?

I agree. I think the latest Octavia is the best one yet to wear that badge. Underneath it is a Golf Mk 7, so it should be decent to drive.

Normally I would advise against buying new, since you are just buying a five figure sum of depreciation when compared to something about 12 months old...
... but, we all know that Porsche is one of the few exceptions to that rule and this is all the more evident in this age of inflated used car prices.
Ultimately, this is a big expense whichever way you cut the man-maths and one which is not strictly necessary given how fit for purpose the 440 still is. The Porsche would be as much a heart purchase as a head one and so, if it were me, I would want to ensure there was as much heart in it as possible by settling only for my perfect specification. If that means buying new, then so be it.

I do find that dashboard massively disappointing. It’s as if Tesla have designed it. I agree. None of the sense of occaison I would expect from a £100k car.

Outstanding! Top petrol head points earned there. I prefer the pre-facelift models, too. Excellent choice.

Is it all new or a big update/facelift? According the report I saw it's all new, using the MLA chassis that can be ICE, hybrid, PHEV or BEV. I think the same chassis was going to underpin the canned XJ6 BEV, which was a decision I still can't fathom. I think Martin may be pleased for a while and then not pleased. My experience of Range Rover values was that the old model held its value really well until the next one was 3 years old and there were lots coming onto the market off 3 year contracts. Then the old one fell like a stone before levelling off. Expect a new car thread on here in about two and a half years time...

Being close the Fosse Way, which seems to be the main Gaydon test track, I have seen a few of what are probably these, in swirly disguise. I fully expect it to be exceptional.

On the Benz I really like the adjustable side bolsters on the driver's seat which means that I can have the seat wrapped around me. I really sit in the seat, rather than on it and together with the multi-level, multi-adjustable lumbar support it is an extremely comfortable place to be. The voodoo cruise and voodoo lights are also superb.
On the Mini the head up display is a must-have to overcome the style-over-ergonomics design of the main dashboard.
On the Standard it is the group of remote greasing points under the bonnet, which reduces the amount of crawling around under the car required.
On the Alvis it is the fact that all the brightwork is nickel plated, rather than vulgar, modern chrome!
