The first 75 minutes of that game was like an audition for WWE! Seemed to me that when the Columbians finally settled down to actually play football, they really should have won it in normal time. Serves them right for pissing about so much.

Tears of joy in the drawing room. Hid under a cushion at one point. Like a kid watching the Daleks in the 70s.

I can't help form the impression that the home crowd isn't entirely on England's side. Or is that just me?

As a relative non-fan of football - I used to watch quite a lot but about 10 years ago got fed up of all the diving - I feel a little conflicted.
I've watched some matches and it has partly restarted my enthusiasm for the sport but I've got to be honest and say that while I wish England all the best if they actually win the World Cup it will guarantee me not watching any football for the rest of my life.
I can't abide by the constant references to '1966' - few people under the age of 60 will have much recollection of that event - and I just know that if they win this year any domestic match for the next 20-30 years will somehow refer to 2018, e.g. Man U vs Liverpool will have references to player X who was in the winning team and played for either of these domestic teams during his career, or player Y played for Sweden, Panama, whoever when they were defeated by England during the 2018 WC campaign.
I've heard these sort of references in commentaries over the years and see no reason not to assume it will continue on the back of a win.
And just to clarify this, simply because I live in Scotland doesn't mean I'm anti-English (I was born in Darlington and half my family are English), I just loathe the way commentators, in particular, constantly refer back to a historical event - 52 years and counting for the 1966 win - as if it is somehow relevent to what you're watching.

I'm still in shock that we've finally won a game after a penalty shootout. This!

Hello Slightly Puzzled!!
What I meant was that if you were watching a domestic league match in, say, 1996 or even a foreign international there was a reasonable chance that at some point the commentator would refer to the 1966 world cup victory. Perhaps I'm the only person in the world who has noticed it but that number of times 1966 has been mentioned (at least when I was still watching football) in circumstances where it is irrelevent are excessive.
Clearly, mentioning it during the current world cup IS acceptable but that's not what I'm talking about.

Unfortunately I couldn’t enjoy the rarity of England winning on penalties,we put our retriever down this morning and I spent most of the evening cuddling her and crying with sadness.

I think you're slightly mistaken - I watch a lot of football, especially domestic, and I can't ever think of a time or an occasion where a commentator would refer to the 1966 World Cup - unless you were watching in the early 1970s when some of that team were still playing. Where you? If you're the only one who has noticed it I think we have the Mandela Effect coming into play here. It's like Scots who complain loudly that their sports stars are referred to as British when they win and Scottish when they lose. Upon examination it has no basis in truth. They also remain silent when English sporting stars; Lewis Hamilton, Bradley Wiggins, Seb Coe, Jessica Ennis etc. are referred to as British.

To be fair that puts football into perspective. Sorry for your loss, I know how hard it is to put a much loved pet to sleep.

I must've been watching different matches from you then as I've heard it (albeit not within the last 10 years as I stopped watching) quite often.
The Scottish/British thing happens but not as commonly as it used to. There are also rare occasions where English sports stars are referred to as English when its in a British context. I don't care about that though.

I was just reading a bit about England's possible path to the WC final and couldn't believe that Belguim are ranked 3rd in the world When did that happen? Switzerland ranked 6th as well. I always have it in my mind that these teams are much lower down the order, certainly below England, France, Italy, etc.

Even after winning the last WC Germany were behind Belgium in the rankings a mere 6 months later. Belgium who have won er..... won...... er...... well...... As to '66 references I lost cont how many times last night it was "Tottenham vs Arsenal". FFS - when Kane / Trippier etc. play for England they play for England and when Ospina drops the ball for Columbia he does it for Columbia (thank goodness - he should have saved that Dyer penalty). Anyway for throwback on Saturday the commentary team will be using "ABBA vs The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band" to compare the teams to an historic, unconnected representative of either side.

What can you say? A comfortable England win in the knockout stages. Defies belief.
Loving it with the rugby-loving Scottish guy on our project.

England have one every game during which my 13th's girlfriend has watched with us, and during which I have played the theme to The League of Gentlemen and Town Called Malice on my bass by way of relieving tension. Both will be present later this week...
