Well if you never paid that tax you must still have it somewhere - that's how it works when I get my tax bill. I'm with Bob on Ronaldo - class act all round. Messi is basically a lesser-wanker in a team of outright wankers at country level and, putting last night's goal aside, this WC shows he needs €1bn of other players around him at FCBollocksalona to look as good as CR7 who can hold Portugal up with one arm. I still couldn't give my definitive answer as to who is best; Ronaldo or Messi - both phenomenal players. Ronaldo excels at being a force of nature, outstanding consistency, dragging his team along with him. Messi ticks along in the midfield before exploding with feats of brilliance. Obviously, neither is as good as Paul Scholes.

2 hours of thrilling drama and zee Germans are out! What a tournament this is turning into.
To be fair the Germans have historically struggled in Russia.

Unbelievable. I had the game on on my iPhone on my desk and Germany looked like Arsenal: all the possession; all the nice football but no final finish.
Bottom of their group: I wouldn't like to be driving through Munich in a Kia tonight.....

You’ve got to be worried if you’re Polish tonight. The last time Germany were this bad they decided to visit for an extended holiday.

In German they say “joy of someone else fucking up”
Fritz: Hast du dem Auto Unfall mit der rollerfahrer gesehen? Hans: Ja. Das war urkomisch. Ich hatte eine große joy of someone else fucking up.

Apparently the last time Germany failed to get out the the groups in a World Cup finals was in 1938. To say they didn’t take it well back then is a bit of an understatement.

Germany doesn't have an especially good record with summer campaigns in Russia, does it?

It’s shocking how poor some of the ‘top’ teams are. 4 of the last 5 world champs knocked out in group stages is remarkable .

Just a pity the Argie's got through, Brazil are nothing special either. Some of the so called minor teams have been blinding on the field, genuinely playing great football.

Neither Belgium or England looked like they were playing to win last night, but England's superior ability of losing matches eventually shone through. A reserve team game, meaningless.

Only Germany are out, assuming we don’t count Italy who didn’t qualify. I agree with the first statement though, all the top teams have looked shaky but tend to get better as the tournament progresses. Brazil particularly tend to be better at the business end of the competition. Although there’s been some upsets so far I expect quality to start to show itself in the knockouts.

Alex- the stat is about the winners of the previous World Cup getting knocked out at the group stage in the following World Cup. I think the relevant teams are France getting knocked out in 2002 after winning in 1998, Italy in 2010 (etc), Spain in 2014 and now Germany in 2018.

It does seem to be a curse of the champions. Perhaps it’s not having played the qualifiers makes them a bit out of practice of playing competitive games.

France 4 Argentina 3. What a magnificent game of football! That was a cracker of a game wasn’t it? Two of the goals were contenders for goal of the tournament! I almost though the Argies were going to nick a draw at the end there too, that would have been awesome.
