-7 on the way into work this morning, with a light dusting of snow and some ice. I replaced the original and worn Toyo winter tyres last week with a set of Vredestein Wintrac Exremes. They stick to the road like glue and even when trying to provoke something with a swift-ish pull out from a junction, the traction control light remained resolutely dark.

Both Herself and I have cleared our paths and driveway today, once each, but it's back over an inch deep again half an hour later! Took this before I took the dogs out, the table has another couple of inches of snow on it since then. The difference a day makes .. .. ..

That's some serious snow some of you have. In London at present, everything is white (about 2-3 inches at our house) and it is bitterly cold (real -4, windchill -10 or more), but so far today it has mostly just been fine "snizzle" blowing around in strong winds rather than new meaningful accumulations.
Garden is looking like a warzone - I think we will have some botanical casualties. For example there is a huge Acanthus (bear's breeches) by our front door that is usually the most indestructible of triffids, second only to the wisteria in terms of having to be kept firmly under control with regular pruning. It has completely collapsed into a sad wilted heap.

Tractors with huge ploughs have just arrived from Stanhope. It took them three hours! (10 minutes journey normally).
Our usual guy has broken down which explains the lack of progress.

I've been struck today, having driven both cars, how much good steering feel makes to driving with confidence in dodgy conditions.

What a difference an hour makes. Spoke too soon! Is driving 23 miles to work a bad idea? Bearing in mind that I won't get paid if I don't go. You said you have winter tyres, right? Front wheel drive, winter tyres - you ought to be alright providing you stick to roads where you think you are unlikely to get stuck (ie ones where you can leave/turn around (ie not dual carriageways/mways etc) and ones which are likely to get gritter/plough attention).

Just got home. The usual 21 mile, half hour journey took 45 minutes. Fish Hill was, er, interesting; with a convoy of cars, vans and lorries slowly edging themselves down, a bit sideways. A SAAB had given up and had pulled partly onto the verge which only caused more havoc. Going up there was a 3-Series convertible, at about a 45 degree angle, and mostly going nowhere. I just pulled out into the overtaking lane and breezed on up the hill as if it was mid summers day. On the level at the top I tried, not a full emergency stop, but a fairly brisk stop to see what would happen. The car just stopped in a straight line with absolutely no drama. If you don't already have any, go out now and get some Veredestein Wintrac Extremes fitted to your car.

Winters tyres started to get a bigger take up after the last bad winter we had. I hope that this one will have the same effect, as people sliding about on summers need to wise up. Especially all those people stuck on the M80 last night for 18 hours - they ought to be campaigning to make winters a legal requirement!

I heard somewhere today there were a couple of gritters stuck in among them too! I've also seen stories posted from various friends/acquaintances about the sterling work carried out by the gritter crews vs. the likes of Herself, who saw not a sign of any such on her trip to the stableyard this morning.

Anuvver fing, I heard on the radio that some insurers can invalidate your cover if you knowingly head out in the car during a red weather warning and then ding it. Anyone else heard that nugget? It’s a load of shite. Dickheads are spreading it all over Facebook as usual. If your numpty actions cause an accident then they could cite contributory negligence, but that’s it.

Nor did we. My eldest is rather upset that her school is fully open again, especially since our youngest is having her second snow day as her primary school has closed. Currently it’s just rain rather than snow.

I’m going to attempt to get to Consett today. We are virtually out of coal and could do with some provisions, although we won’t starve or freeze if I can’t get out. One of our neighbours has been snowed out for the week and is currently at his mother in laws. He is desperate to get home so I may be giving him a hand today too.

I've not bothered venturing out the last few days. The car is on performance tyres and I have no interest in changing to winters which to my mind just have you on the wrong tyre for half the time given our changeable weather in winter. It'll be 15c in the next week or 2 and I haven't felt the need for winter tyres before this week

Two flakes settled on the car yesterday and it was around 30 minutes before they melted away, so for us, pretty extreme conditions! Whoops - spoke too soon

I've just spoken to a client who is snowed in - the local roads have 8 to 10 foot drifts and his Golf R is buried in his driveway and he can only see the top of the VW sign on the boot! He reckons it will be Monday before the main roads are opened again and well in to next week before he can get out - and my wife wants to move to the country!

The wild winds got up last night. There are now really bad drifts everywhere. For the first time in 25 years in our house we were snowed in this morning. The lane was blocked in both directions. Has now been made just passable by some locals with their tractors and I've been out to get some provisions. More snow is forecast for tonight. It took all morning to feed the sheep and sort out the horses. I managed to get the quad bike stuck in a drift and had to dig it out - after manually dragging the small trailer I was towing out of the way. Bugger, I'm knackered now! Our lane to get to a main road -
