This week I've seen a yellow Aventador (it must be Aventador month, when most of them come off SORN), a white McLaren sports series, and a black 981 Boxster Spyder, which I think is the first one I've actually seen on the open road as opposed to at a motoring event.

Saw my first 19 today which was also my first new Z4. It was a M40i.

I think it is a totally stupid system for engine identification and like most people I don't have a clue what's under the bonnet of these Audi's Whilst I agree with the last comment, didn't other makes start this trend in obfuscation? (And the 750i and 435d do not pack what might be inferred from their names!)

What is the solution though, a simple engine size is convenient but they love their differentiation for smugness. Otherwise what is the point with one engine covering more than one output. Even my car is properly a VW 1600 Type A Twin Carb (TC).

The new Jaguar system makes the most sense with the number of different power outputs you can get from one engine.

All the German big three are at it. 328i = 2.0, A45 = 2.0! Yes, they're all at it and have been for a while. When Mercedes facelifted the S Class just over a year ago, the 4.4 V8 S500 (saloon) became the 3.0 V6 S500 and there's a new S560e which has a lower powered 3.0 V6 topped up with an electric motor. That's not the engine that a S560 coupe has though, its got a 4.0 V8.

Agreed again. And if you do have one I think the way Audi used to do it by just having a TDI or TFSI badge and only the owner knowing what was under the bonnet was one of the better ways of going about it.

Agreed, what is the importance of engine 'badging' apart from anything else it looks bloody unsightly.

I am sure that one of the reasons for the trend towards ambiguous badging is the move towards smaller engines. 328i looks better than 320i Turbo.
Some will think that my new A4 has a 3.5 litre engine. It even has a fake second tailpipe for the full 'looks like a six cylinder' effect.

I spotted 2 vehicles getting trailered yesterday. First was an early 90s Audi Coupe Quattro and the second was an air cooled VW pickup that was in restored condition and painted a dark sludge grey colour.

SSangyong Rexton on a 16 plate. A bit nothing really, driven by someone in their 70's at least. No idea what they are like apart from rare.

From experience a 2013 Rexton is similar to drive to a 2009 Discovery (3?). The one with the Merc 5 pot diesel was surprisingly rapid if you put your foot down. They always used to make a big play of the towing weight.

I drove a few of Rextons and Korando Sports (the pickup one).
The garage had a 58 plate van version of the Rexton which was the 'hack' and not really looked after which came across clearly when driving it. The other Rextons were all gentrified with leather, autobox, etc.
The Korandos were surprising with a 2 litre diesel and a modern autobox plus niceties such as DAB radio and satnav. Not unpleasant at all. Fpr a pickup!

Saw a brand new Audi A6 yesterday. In black with 2 thick chrome strips across the back, the rear styling is a complete dogs breakfast.
Also saw a new A1 with the vents at the front of the bonnet, not outstanding at all really.

Not so much something I saw but something I did - I overtook a 5 series in a 30mph limit as we passed a speed camera - it was snowing and he was doing a maximum of 15mph and sometimes less! 30 mph dispatched him no problem and didn't trigger any camera anger! Some people really shouldn't be allowed to drive.

Just remembered I spotted a C43AMG the other day. White with a black roof - might have been a cabrio? Today, a Q6 50TDi. Which, at first, I read as 5.0TDi. Doh! Someone I work with had a couple of cars to plug a two week gap between company car, one of which was a Q8. He was telling me about it which included how quick but economical is was for a 5 litre engine.... Its a stupid engine naming system. I don't even know where to begin with that...!

He's got a XC60 T8, I daren't ask him what engine he thinks it has!! All he's said is it's quick but the mpg is poor (it replaces a 520d) and the the range is driving him mad, so I reminded him of how much he's saving in company car tax, for now...

I saw a bright McLaren filling its side of a backroad near St Andrews yesterday. Kudos for being out on that pothole ridden road with so much standing water.

A new shape 3 series Northbound on the M6.
You wouldn’t confuse it for the old (current?) model, one thing that stands out is how dark the rear tail lights are, makes it look different to anything else on the road

Saw a Scion Opendeck earlier today. If you knew what that was without resorting to Google I’m impressed.

A rather pretty mid-dark metallic blue Ferrari 512BB driving out of our residential development this morning.
Our house is near the main entrance gates so anything exiting has to idle a moment outside whilst the electric gates open. Heard a rather impressively angry mechanical gargling noise outside and peeked out of the upstairs window just in time to see said Ferrari drive out of the gates.
Now intrigued as to which house it came from. There are a fair few sports and/or classic cars in the development owing to the fact that all the properties (houses and flats) have garages, but this is the nicest I've seen so far.
