I've been toying with the idea of a second car for a while and I've managed to put a budget together to do this, £30k but might be able to stretch it.
Option 1 would be along the lines of a Boxster/Cayman or even an F-Type but there's so much more choice when you start looking at the classics, an old Alfa Romeo perhaps? Option 2 would be to swap the Discovery but I'm reluctant to do that as I dearly like the car and I don't think I've done enough with it yet.
So, for a COVID19 free thread, what would you get for £30k?

What would I get with £30K depends so much on other factors and cars in my life. If I was handed £30K and told I had to spend it on a car(s) in the next 12 hours it would almost certainly be a Boxster. The joys of open top motoring are hard to forget when you have experienced them. However as an only car, the equation changes significantly and it would probably be something like an M2 or Golf R. An M140i and a Mini for my daughter would also be a serious consideration. Left of field choices like an MX5 would also be in there because there is so much fun to be had at sensible speeds. I have also been getting some pressure to get my helmet out again and do some hillclimbs and sprints and that would require a Caterham or an Atom.
I really wouldn't want anything old because they are never as good as you remember them to be and they need a lot of time and maintenance.

I waste an inordinate amount of my day looking at the 20-50k sector and you can't beat a Cayman/Boxter. If you can find a manual 981 Boxster S with a few choice options like leather dash, climate, bose and DAB you'll want for little else.
If you had 35K and depending on how uncomfortable you want to go and if you want to get on track, I'd be looking at Lotus Exige S.
With regards to Classic, I'd love an Alfetta GTV6 or Clio V6
Left field Abarth 124 Spider, you get them from 15K now.
Stretch the budget a bit and I'd love an Alpine A110

I can't see past a Boxster with that brief and budget. Essential options are Full Leather, Sports Exhaust and Proper Xenons (look for headlight washers)

With regards to Classic, I'd love an Alfetta GTV6 ...... ... no, no, no. It'd be a huge disappointment. They're not fast, they're surprisingly soft and roly poly and the gearchange is a bit of a nightmare. They do sound good though! At the moment my £30k would go into a BMW 440i. If I had the cash in my hand though that would probably change.

NO, don't tell me that, I've lusted after them for years and should have got it out of my system when they were sub 5k. Beside they can't be that bad, James Bond made it look bloody good when he was outwitting all those 5 Series in Octopussy.

They can be made better with some suspension work and I think the specialists have found ways to improve the gearchange. The 2.5 version is preferable to the 3.0 as it's a freer revving engine. Or you could drop in a 3.0/3.2 24v from something later

To make the most of it, if it were me, I'd be considering a duo of a Caterham and a Renaultsport Clio for thrills when the weather isn't as good. Either would be trackable. If not that, then a classic, possibly something from Alfa with a lovely tuneful motor.

Having watched the latest Harry's Garage video I've covered Esprits already.
The car would be used in addition to the Discovery for those rare times I can forgo the extra tonnage. We're incredibly lucky up here in having some of the finest roads in the country and it'd be nice to get a bit more use of them. One particular route to a friend in the Moors is probably the reason I go through brake pads so often, that road would be much better in something more car-like.

Alfa 4C Spider?
Mixed reviews but owners seem to tell a different story.

Thought about a recent MX-5? Or the Fiat sibling?

Have you got decent covered storage available? Anything "classic" or "old" is going to need some care to prevent rust becoming a serious issue.

30k would get me the XF wagon that I want and an old Monza to drop a V8 or a BMW straight 6 into.

If this was in addition to the existing fleet then I'd probably choose a black 370Z Nismo and spend some of the remaining £5k getting the tacky red bits wrapped in black. I suppose the balance could pay for the 320 getting fixed!

TVR Tamora or T350 if you prefer a coupe. 3.6 Speed Six doesn't have the chocolate engine problems that plagued the Tuscan.

Not sure about the UK but here in the USA, E46 M3s are starting to appreciate in value and they were a fantastic car to drive. Could be a fun and financially good investment.

Agree with the comments re the boxster - it will be hard to beat at the price.
Couple of alternates:
Classic: Mercedes so r107 - Push the budget a bit: Aston Martin V8 vantage
Both offer a bit of style and are probably safer places to put your money

Well, if we can squeeze the 911 into the mix then this old Harris video belongs here.

If I was looking to sink £30k into a toy, I'd want it to depreciate as little as possible.
That's just one reason why my Z1 made such an excellent toy.
Much as I like the Alfa 4C, I suspect it would be an uncomfortable nightmare on the sorts of roads Michael might be driving on.
So, I'd look at (purely in alphabetical order):
Alfa Romeo Montreal (more for classic appeal than outright driving) Aston Martin V8 Vantage Aston Martin DB9 Audi TT RS Audi R8 4.2 manual BMW Z3M/Z4M Citroen SM (again more for classic appeal than outright driving) Lotus Evora Maserati GranSport Maserati GranTurismo Porsche 996 Porsche 997
I'd find it very hard to look past a really nice and well-cared for Audi R8 4.2 manual. If you've not tried one, I'd recommend doing so. They are probably perfect for the sorts of roads around you with the benefit of AWD.
