I know this won't go down well but I've never liked the R8. I can't get on with the looks at all and I feel they're quite wide? I like the idea of something like this: www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1119280I'd worry though that I have no clue about them and I don't want to have to become a full-time mechanic as a certain Land Rover enthusiast on this forum has. I also really like F-Types but should I get wind that an M2 Competition can be had within budget I am likely to go for that.

Fair enough. It'll be your car so you need to like it!
I have two friends who own one of those Alfas. They are gorgeous but you need to be a decent home mechanic (as both are).
F-Types seem to depreciate like stones flung from buildings, and I found the V6S version a bit "meh", so for a toy surely it needs to be the V8 version. Can you get one in budget?
What about an 1M?

Good find Racing. I like that a lot and it does appear to have been well cared for.

I've had to hide my feelings for years in fear of coming out as a hater. As for the M2 Comp, if you find one for 30k let me know! I've seen a number of good OG M2's for 25K. To be honest, your in that dangerous camp at 30k, in that a lot of cars are within reach like Maseratis, Astons etc but your looking at the more ropey end of the market where big bill roulette awaits.

I could do a 1M. I believe the F-Type has got better over time and the more recent models are better than the earlier models.
I'm conscious that being able to afford to buy is different to being able to afford to run and with that in mind I'd avoid Astons, Maseratis are anything that can cause me that much grief.

but should I get wind that an M2 Competition can be had within budget I am likely to go for that. You will get an M2 for around £30K but M2 Competitions are closer to £40K but up to 2 years younger. My friend got his brand new 20 plate M2C for under £49K and there are 69 plate pre regd cars for about £44K. On the same roads that I marvelled at my car's magical suspension, he said he couldn't believe how well the M2C just dealt with the bumps and undulations and how soft and wallowy he found his 330D MSport Touring by comparison when previously he thought it was great (and it was in comparison to other more normal cars)

I'm still holding out on the perhaps unrealistic hope that some serious discounting will need to be done when the recession really hits, but I suspect that's misplaced opportunism on my part.

The 1M is certainly a classic (and priced as such) but they are getting to that age when if they are properly used they will fall in value. However as something to keep tucked up in a garage and brought out on sunny days, it would be great and a rawer (but slower) experience than an M2C.

That's always the issue when you look at more interesting stuff. M2 competitions are down to £38k, so holding out for £35k doesn't seem impossible but I think you'd have to wait quite a while for them to get to £30k.

The budget has a degree of elasticity.

Well elasticity gets you into a Giulia QV.
Maybe more of a daily then a weekender.

The budget has a degree of elasticity. OK and if you get something newer you can man maths the lower running costs (longer service intervals, warranty etc) into the budget. On running costs. I had a brief thought of getting a Cayenne Turbo last week, as my local dealer has one that's (relative to others for sale) a decent price but I wondered how much the PSCB brakes would be to replace. They last 30% longer than normal pads/dics, but based on what I've read that would still mean a replacement set of both in the next 3 years. A full set of discs and pads from Design911 (so plus fitting) would be £5,800!

The budget has a degree of elasticity. I do like the M2 a lot. From the sounds of, well just about everything, an M2C is worth every penny over an M2. Apart from the fact that at least personally I far prefer the wheels. I've never remotely the liked the design the M2 (and non-comp M4) wears. Advantage of an M2 over a 1M is that you can have one with a sunroof. Don't know about you, but if my toy isn't soft-topped, then I'd want at least a sunroof. I just like light and air from above. Coming from a Disco you might find it less claustrophobic too. Putting all that aside, an Evora would tempt me if I lived where you live. Albeit with the "lots of trouble usually serious" caveat.

I'm not a fan of the wheels either. I saw Chris Harris has taken delivery of an M2 Competition with the wheels off the run out version:
I could get on board with that but they don't feature on the configurator. I'd Also be tempted to stick on CSL style wheels or some of O.Z finest.

But I'd have been tempted by the orangey-red colour they come in. Having seen a few around, it's a darker, more elegant shade than the bright tangerine hue the 1M came in, and I rather like it.

Number plate is similar to my Kuga's original.. RO17TZZ, so it may well have come from Barons BMW just down the road from me

I'd start with the Wheels and get a nice set of BBS CI-R's, then you move to springs and spacers, carbon bits, ECU upgrade and you've spent a fortune.

I've got a friend with one of those M5s in white. It looks very much of the wrong sort but then he is.

Having watched the latest Harry's Garage video I've covered Esprits already.
I've watched both those Esprit videos and whilst I'd prefer a non-turbo S2 or S3 they've done nothing to dampen a fairly strong desire to have one.

I used to ponder an Esprit with a BMW v8 or v6 but obviously never had the money to do it. Would a BMW v8 fit?

That's more than the RRP on the BMW website, but is supposed to include a £750 discount. The price for the M2 wheels are actually £5000, it's the 20" with Super Sport rather than Cup 2 tyres that's £4500. A set of Cup 2 tyres is £1100, so slightly cheaper to buy them separately but BMW would offer a discount.
