It has the mouth of a sock puppet.

Horrid alloys too. Not very appealing.

Is this going to have the distracting light bar all the way across the front? What are the 5 lights below the headlights for or is it just DRL overload?

I never thought the Golf GTi could get any more dull, but I was wrong. The wheels look tiny, the ride height is comical, the shape is achingly dull.
It'll sell loads. May as well have a Hotpoint badge on it.

Front is too droopy and the wheels are awful. The interior is more modern, but they've gone too far with removal of buttons.
All depends on how good it is to drive.

Make mine a Megane Renaultsport RS if that's what the Golfs going to look like.

Make mine a Megane Renaultsport RS if that's what the Golfs going to look like. The does depend on whether you want to look at it or sit inside it.... The front end of the Megane has its own issues, but it is a lot more interesting to look at.

I'm struggling to tell the difference between this one and the last. Is the front a bit longer?

It's not lovely is it? The leccy Golf concept thing is much more appealing.

It isn't an improvement on the Mk7, but hopefully the R will look a bit better, it always has. and It's still the best looking hatch of recent times imho.

I'm sure it'll be great to drive, but it looks a bit meh.

It seems to be another of those designs where having decided to go with new slimmer headlights, they just didn't know what to do with the rest of the front, so put a sodding great lower grille there to fill up the space. Not a good design.
And I agree that the wheels are horrid.

Make mine a Megane Renaultsport RS if that's what the Golfs going to look like. Which, of course, is where they nicked the DRLs from... The Golf 8 is a proper munter and no GTI-ing or R-ing is going to save it.

It's still the best looking hatch of recent times imho. After it's Spanish cousin. IMHO.

Are the headlights lower than the Mk7 or is the bonnet more bulbous?
Those flicks at the back of the headlights are unpleasant too.

I think it's that they're narrower and wider that makes the look set lower and the bonnet more bulging. The picture above is typical of launch pictures which are taken from the perspective of a toddler. In reality we look down on cars more like in Martins first picture so it may look better in reality when we are more stood over it. I doubt it though.

242 bhp, a bit tame? Glad it still has a manual. I think I would go for an I30 N or Megane RS. Mind, the look of that Honda Type R with the lower rear wing does look better. It still looks like a mess elsewhere, unfortunately. I like the look of the mark 8, but not the GTI. Has nice silver round tail pipes though!

It's a Golf, it probably weighs more than a small moon so 242 bhp is only just going tl make it reasonably quick.

I don't think the latter MQB cars are as heavy, compared to rivals, as earlier Golfs may have been. And the GTi has to be contender in the driving stakes, VW know that. I think it will probably drive well and the R will be on another level. This Golf does look a bit long and still has that droopy nose, though!

I'm not writing it off just yet. It remains on my potential hot hatch shortlist, along with the GR Yaris (current favourite), Hyundai i30N, new Civic Type R Sport Line (with smaller wing). Other cars may be added to this list as they get launched.
My own buying decision is likely to be in a year's time!

The lower grille on that new GTi is simply gopping. Mk7 is cleanest and simplest in a long time.

Bigger wheels help a bit, even though I don’t particularly like the style. To Michael’s earlier point, be interesting to see it from a more natural angle, as this one is better than the first one in the thread. Still struggling with it though.

I hadn't realised those wheels were available on the Mk7.5 Golf R but I saw one advertised yesterday. They don't suit either iteration.

The ones on the 7.5R are optional on the standard car or come with the performance pack, the Pretoria is a much nicer wheel.
