I hadn't realised those wheels were available on the Mk7.5 Golf R but I saw one advertised yesterday. They don't suit either iteration. They are the same wheels. The ones on the 7.5R are optional on the standard car or come with the performance pack, the Pretoria is a much nicer wheel. I agree. There's no way I'd pay extra for those things but most of the used Rs have a five spoke with a triple split (?) design that reminds me of the cookie cutters on my 2nd MG Maestro!

I’m not a fan of the 18s either, but there are fairly good quality 19” Pretoria replicas available for less than £600 or Racingline do a nice set. Are these the ones you saw on the R?

Yup it was those. They don't suit it at all to my eyes.

It's the new nose on the Golf I don't like. A bit like the Arteon which looks as though an elephant has sat on the front of the bonnet, the Golf now has that droopy nose with the lights set lower and I don't think it is attractive.

The nose on the F30 shape 3 & 4 series is surprisingly droopy if you look at it from the side but its hidden much better than the new Golf.

So, the front does look better from a more natural viewing angle and the ride height/stance looks OK too on 19s and the R should look better as the honeycomb grille will be broken up.

And red has always suited the Golf GTI.
I had three tornado red Golfs - a Mk2 1.8GL, a Mk2 GTI 16v and a Mk3 GTI 8v.

Definitely looks better from that angle!

I like the look of that and its stance. Just need to see one properly from all angles now but that looks as though it will be another success.

The lower grille still looks pretty big to me. And those wheels are gash. Unsymetrical wheels never look good. They may look good on one side but are backwards on the other.... But the shape and other detailing looks good. Maybe get it in black with normal wheels?

The grille looks huge but otherwise it looks 100% better than the official photos. The ride height appears very low too.

The grille will be broken up on the R, so it will be the best looking version (same as the old model....) and should have better looking wheels again as well.

As I thought, the front will look better than the GTI as it doesn’t have the large expanse of honeycomb. I still think it will look better when you see one on the road than it does in pictures.

I haven't read the article but from a glance at the pictures it looked like a much larger car than the Mk7.

I haven't read the article but from a glance at the pictures it looked like a much larger car than the Mk7. It's on the same platform, but it is slightly (3cm) longer and pretty much the same width and height.

from a glance at the pictures it looked like a much uglier car than the Mk7. Is that better?

It's certainly different. Car design is heading to more complex treatments of all parts and VW are just following the trend.

At least it will have the excuse of needing enough air for 760BHP.

Why have they copied an old Astra?

Suddenly the hatch looks a lot better! Ideal for the person who wants 14 feet of car.

Suddenly the hatch looks a lot better! Shooting myself in the foot here perhaps, but I'd liken it far more to a Mk3 Octavia estate. (vRS version shown here)

Skoda looks much better proportioned
Just like the outgoing ones, I reckon the Leon estate will look much better than the golf
