A bit of a come-dowm, a Yaris after a Cayman, surely ??

Looks like a great spec and a lot of effort has gone into it. Not my sort of thing, but can see the appeal.

A rally car for the road. What's not to like?

That's a properly engineered and sorted little car which looks as if it would be massive fun. I'm surprised they haven't tried to sneak a bit of hybrid power in there too. My only concern is the price might be pretty steep with all that engineering on board. With the performance it will have with 4WD, 1260kg and 260HP I reckon it might be well on the wrong side of £50K.

Apparently it's going to be priced from about £32k in the UK, probably more with the circuit pack which adds diffs on each axle, forged wheels and PS4S tyres. Given that they need to sell quite a few in order to homologate the rally car, Toyota need to be sensible about the price - especially given the pricing of really good hot hatches from the next size-class up.
Haven't been offered a slot regarding the 718 GT4. Might get offered one later on in the run - who knows. But I know that I love the idea of this Yaris!

Kudos to Toyota. It really does sound like a bespoke pocket rocket. I'm not sure Toyota will make much money from making it, the enthusiasts at Toyota are winning. The cheaper option would have been to closely relate it to the stock FWD Yaris. And they would have shifted more units as well, pricing it closer to the Fiesta ST.
Here is Toyota making a 4WD hot Yaris, and Renault can't even commit to a hot Cilo!

Who'd have ever thought that Toyota - the home of dull, sensible motoring - would be getting a lot more headlines of a good sort then other manufacturers? They've just been plugging away all those years and suddenly they've become interesting. Kudos to them for doing this car.
They were early into hybrids They're investing big into hydrogen power They're the only manufacturer who still says that city cars (of Yaris size) have a future The Corolla has become good looking and nearly interesting to buyers They've never given up with Lexus (although they do need a new designer....) At least they've done another Supra.
And now they've brought out a 3 door proper hot hatch.
Perhaps they're not as dull as everyone thinks?

My only reserve would be the flaky quality of Japanese sports cars. I seem to remember that the Celica GT4s needed new turbos every 70-80K or so and you were very lucky if the clutch lasted that long. I think the Nissan 350/370Z also eats clutches for a pasttime. I overheard a couple of owners discussing this issue the other day. Er, the Celica GT4 is from 30 years ago when EVERYTHING needed a turbo before 100k miles. Don't forget BMW managed to put the 335i on sale in the late 2000s with twin turbos that failed fairly regularly - more than 1 car mag had turbo failure on their long termers. From experience 370s are keen on clutch slave cylinders. Could've been a minor issue except they're integral with the gearbox so that has to get dropped to replace it.

Yes!
Finally, what I would call a 'proper' hot hatch: Light, rowdy and a bit naughty looking. All Toyota need to do now is do an Aygo GR, with a detuned version of that engine and drivetrain.

An Aygo with 4WD - that would be like the really short remote control toys that just go round in circles doing donuts!

I'm hoping that what Toyota do next is a proper manual version of the Supra and that it'll depreciate like a stone so I can pick one up at a sensible price in a couple of years.

£30k according to Autocar today. Seems surprisingly cheap. £33.5 for the track pack.

Please bring it to Oulton Park when you get it and give me plenty of notice so I can book a day off or talk our crew into doing a trackday.
