I bet that will ride really well, with only little trade off in handling.

Surely all season tyres are the worst of both worlds? OK in the winter but not as good as a winter tyre and OK in the summer but not as good as a summer tyre. They’re generally pretty close to a good winter tyre in cold/wet conditions and even in snow. The best all season tyres are better in the winter than an average winter tyre according to the tests and in the last one I read, incredibly close to the best winter. Then, when the temperature is in double figures, they perform a lot better than a winter tyre. I wouldn’t run them all year round, but they do suit our variable winter temperatures.

I bet that will ride really well, with only little trade off in handling. Depends on what you think good ride is. At anything above waking speed it will ‘float and wallow’ way too much (for me) on such a high profile tyre and standard SE suspension.

Bit (large amount) of exaggeration there - it's still a BMW, not a 1974 Oldsmobile. For 90% of people SE spec suspension plus smaller wheels/high profile tyres is the sweet spot.

Are in the majority or minority Bob? I would say I'm in the majority - the 3 and 5 series SE models ride much better than their MSport counterparts. The difference isn't as marked as it was previously but if comfort is your priority that's the way to go.

I thought your 3 series was a Shadow Edition?

I thought your 3 series was a Shadow Edition? It is. But it's also X-Drive so it deletes the sport suspension. It'd ride even better on 17 inch wheels but allow the tart in me the 19s.

I've just realised that site and the ebay seller are one and the same! Doh! On the ebay listing you can see there is a pretty big gouge in one of the tyres, but on the website it has been badly disguised using Paint. That could well be not as bad as it looks. I had a winter tyre with a small gouge in the side wall near the wheel and a tyre place said it was quite safe to use. But any sort of bulge and get rid straight away.

No exaggeration, just my opinion based on experience. I've driven several small wheeled SE suspended BMWs and I didn't like them, too much vertical movement, which can make me feel slightly car sick even when I'm driving. I didn't like the standard air suspension on the 7 series either (same with the S Class) for the same reason, if I had one of those I'd be in Sport the whole time to firm it up. Mine is either in voodoo mode or Sport, mainly the former.

They are in the EU with all its rules and regulations, after all! Or is caveat emptor and my decision whether to use it once I've bought it?

Have you tried phoning a few Audi dealers to see what price they might want for winter wheel and tyre packs?

I didn't know that (although I now vaguely remember it being mentioned before). I hate to think what a non-X Drive MSport is like then.

The 18" wheels from an Audi dealer? Are you sitting down?
£827 each! That's for one rim only. Centre cap? Extra. Tyre? Extra!

Think I saw those before but discounted them because the ebay page says used and they were more expensive than the supposedly new ones from Germany. But... when you click the read more button it says they're new, not used. Confused dot com.

I contacted the seller of the ebay wheels and got a reply saying they're sold. How convenient.

Surely all season tyres are the worst of both worlds? OK in the winter but not as good as a winter tyre and OK in the summer but not as good as a summer tyre. I reckon they are the ideal compromise for our winter climate. Something like Crossclimates or one of the others of its kind. I was suggesting using them as a winter tyre, putting your summers back on for summer. Should have been a bit clearer on that.

Is it worthwhile getting in touch with the Project Khan's of the world - they must do something with the normal wheels?

I went on one of those part finder websites where they send out a request to breakers around the UK. I got one answer from a place in Oldham that said set of four wheels for £300. I replied asking about size, condition etc.
Nothing.

If they were straight off a broken car there's a good chance they'd be 20" wheels, which would make for expensive tyres. I think I might just walk to work if/when it snows!
