Well, I ended up having to spend the weekend in very snowy Suffolk after my mother had a fall and cracked a couple of ribs, and that would have been tricky without winter tyres. The side road to her house was absolutely sheet ice and the drifting snow meant you'd be driving down an otherwise clear road and go round a corner and encounter full-on Narnia. The back road from her village to the nearest Waitrose in Saxmundham was particularly bad. However, the car coped fine, much I think to the dismay of the two Farmer Giles-types in the double-cab behind me who clearly thought that the fancy BMW was going to get very stuck indeed, particularly each time I had to pull over into the heaped slush at the side when passing on-coming traffic.
And in case anyone is wondering, those are the power cables leading out from Sizewell.

Wishing your mother a speedy recovery. That must be very sore. We also have been on a mother visit this past few days (support bubble) but not a single snow flake to be seen in Worcestershire. Not yet got any winter tyres for this Benz and will wait until next year now. 8 degrees here right now.

Good to get some decent use out of the winters. Hope your mum makes a good recovery.
The weather at the moment is why AS tyres are a good option for the UK. We've had snow / very cold weather over the last week and now it's into double figures with 14-16c forecast for the next 7 days, not good conditions for winters.

Thanks all. Neither she nor we are part of any other support bubble, so we decided we now are one.
She should be ok, but obviously can't drive, nor walk very far. So is going to reliant on deliveries. We did a massive shop for her and cooked a few things, and then her cleaner will do another for her at the end of the week, and we'll try to get down again at the end of next week (can't this weekend).

I hope your mum gets over it fairly quickly, difficult healers at that age. The old girl upstairs had a similar fal some time ago but is starting to heal properly now. A hot water bottle on the affected area (Not too hot) can help.

Had these fitted today as the mismatched summers on the RAV were down to bare bones on the front. The rears were still 5mm so they will be going on ebay later. They were much cheaper than all the other all seasons thanks to an offer Pirelli are doing at the minute so it was a no brainer - Harry M rates them on his RR, and I think Land Rover fit them as OEM so worth a shot. Although you can get Scorpion Verde summer and all season which is a bit confusing as I thought Scorpion Verde was their all season tyre. Anyway, bring on the snow!

Yes, my car has the same tyre, but with the foam inserts to reduce noise and I don't know if there are any differences in the JLR marked tyre or not. If the compound is the same, they'll last forever! They are a bit more expensive (£294 vs £274) but if/when I need new tyres I think I'll give the Scorpion Zero All Season tyre a go, as that's a JLR marked tyre but a bit better rated.

Peskily, it seems that BMW have issued a diktat that they will no longer offer seasonal wheel storage. I had an apologetic call from BMW Battersea to break the bad news that when the car goes in for its winter wheel change at the end of next month, I will need to take the summer wheels away with me and find somewhere else to sote them.
Fortunately one of our neighbours has kindly agreed to find some space for them in her garage.

I had a look at the forecast for the next few weeks which says it is either pouring or cold, so on Saturday I got the winter wheels back on the car. The size of the brakes never cease to amaze me when I take off the wheels and the rear ones are nearly as big. The glove in the photo is 9 inches long! and now it looks like this: The ride is so much better on the 19" wheels and I think it just feels even more connected to the road from a driver's perspective. There is no doubt the summer 20"s provide enormous grip but I quite like the extra playability provided by the 19"s.

I must say that the 19” ride on Eva is like a water bed compared to the 20” of the Gorilla. That’s also down to the dampers working differently in Eva as whereas the Gorilla was always in Sport, the new set up won’t allow Sport dampers with Hybrid or Electric running as it assumes Sport means ICE. I can get it in Adaptive but that means I need to put every journey in the Nav: to the country club and back, to stage school and to the Supermarket don’t really warrant it to be honest plus being Adaptive I would barely get any Sport set-up journey time in those trips.

I've had a few moments recently on greasy roads - usually coming off a roundabout when the grippy bit ends (so at higher speeds) so I've just ordered a set of Continental TS860 tyres. Fingers crossed they're not shite!
£856 all in from Kwik Fit mobile.

Thanks Martin.
The standard fit Bridgestones have been really struggling when the roads are shiny, even when the temps were above 10 degrees.

Whatever was on it when I bought it but presumably BMW approved ones since it came from John Clarks, although as I've said before JC aren't particularly impressive. The car is 10 minutes walk away so I'm not going to go and check!

I found the Bridgestone S001's to be pretty good but the RE050 whilst good in summer, went rock hard in winter and also had a very hard ride.

From the feel of the car I think it might be the RE050s then. I'll try to remember to look when I go back to the car later.
I do intend to ditch the runflats in favour of, say, Michelins next year

I am guessing I might have RE050s as the normal/summer tyres on my car, but I've not found the ride materially different on the 18" winter wheels (Pirelli Sottozeros) than on the standard 19" summer wheels.
My tyres are definitely slippery when wet at this time of year. I don't have to use much hoof coming off, say a roundabout on a wet dual carriageway, to feel the back end twerk momentarily before the DSC steps in. Happened the other day exiting Heathrow T5 to join the M25.
Mind you, the Pirellis aren't much cop either unless it's really cold. They are excellent in actual snow and ice. But in merely wet and cold conditions, I'm not convinced they are significantly better than the Bridgestones.

I've always found Pirellis to 'enhance' an already hard ride so maybe that applies to their winter tyres as well?

My car doesn't have a hard ride - I have adaptive suspension and it's five years old next month which has probably softened things up as well.

Post by Tim on Nov 4, 2021 14:16:22 GMT
Righto. You should try one without the adaptive!
I put Pirellis on the back of the 370 and noticed the ride got harder.

It might save hassle if you had separate wheels for the winter tyres.
