I think they have quite a flat roof that makes them look lower. Anyway looking closely at the 4 series shots I think some enterprising firm could provide an alternative front end, as far as I can tell its all plastic and almost one piece so it could be bolt off, bolt on. Khan Design? Or Mansory? That'll be £25,000 for that bumper, sir. Card or cash?

Mansory or Khan won't bother. They will realise that they can't make the front any more chavvy or ugly than it possibly already going to be.

I don't know what the legal position on a new bumper would be given it is effectively the entire nose cone and engineered as a key part of pedestrian impact structure. Plenty of companies offer different bumper styles but I'd guess it would invalidate your warranty and potentially your insurance as it's a safety critical item. It could be done but it'd cost a fortune to do it properly.

In a few years time everyone will have grown used to the way it looks and there'll be several owners on here.
Possibly!

Or the company with a propeller badge will remove it from sale having seen sense. I hope.

BMW did this with Bangle - shock people with a challenging design departure and then dial it back in subsequent re-freshes/models.

Indeed, and while appearance is subjective, I can only think of one Bangle-era design that remains universally considered ugly and that's the original Bangle-butt 7-series.
To me, the thing about the Bangle designs is that they all tended to look iffy in SE-spec with dowdy bumpers and small wheels, but much better when given a bit of a schporty makeover, which just made you think that the M/MSport version was how it looked in the designer's sketches and then they uglyfied it for production in order to upsell more expensive versions with bigger profit margins.

But there's no hiding the Coypu-teeth grille on this new design, no matter how much you wave the magic wand of schportiness.

I just think they have run out of ideas and when lack of talent runs out of ideas it is always going to be a mess.

Rather than having run out of ideas I think it's possibly an ego problem - BMW have had a very clear design language and the big heads in charge of design don't want to simply evolve that but would rather make a statement and this hideousness is what you end up with!
After all everyone has heard of Chris Bangle but how many people know who Paul Bracq or Klaus Luthe are?

I just think that left alone BMW designers naturally gravitate towards the "same sausage, different length" default styling. I'm not saying what they are coming out with now is good but they do need the occasional kick up the arse to shake it up a bit. "From chaos comes order" etc

"From chaos comes order" etc Something about grilles of that size on cars does invoke certain pre-conceived notions about "sausages" and "length" but perhaps not in a manner flattering to the drivers thereof.

I think as BMW drivers we are automatically relegated to cocktail sausages in the eyes of many....

Bit damned if you do damned if you don't with BMW design, currently its either boring like the 1, 3 and 5 series or hideous like the 6, 7 & 8.
Whats worse is that for a company like BMW, who has years of history to fall back on, for a decent car design their best offerings are the X3 or X5.

We’ll get used to it like we did with Audi’s beard. The LCI might tweak it too.

We’ll get used to it like we did with Audi’s beard. The LCI might tweak it too. Perhaps but getting used to something is totally different from seeing it and thinking "I must have one of those". I will view it in the same way I view a Nissan Juke or a Prius - when I see one they no longer make me say "what the f*ck" but I sure as hell wouldn't buy one through choice.

The 2 Series CG looks comical at the rear, the CLA looks like an oil painting in comparison.
The G20 is a rather big car now, a slightly shrunk sedan on the CLAR platform could have been compelling. No idea how realistic it was, but the Autocar image of the next M2 looked pretty decent a few issues a go.

Based on current problems, there won't be anyone with any money around to buy such a monstrosity very shortly. That grill just looks all wrong and I'd go as far as saying that the new 4 series otherwise looks pretty boring. The interesting rear end on the concept car has been totally toned down leaving not a great deal to like. A great shame and a missed opportunity.

Perhaps somebody will design an oversized number plate that can hide more of that snozzle?

^ Bizarrely although many plate companies offer larger custom-sized rear plates, I've never seen any larger-than-standard front plates. Smaller ones, yes, but not larger ones.
Anyway, with an effective worldwide lockdown, who's going to buy a new car at the moment when it seems the furthest you can drive is to the hospital or supermarket?

^ Anyway, with an effective worldwide lockdown, who's going to buy a new car at the moment when it seems the furthest you can drive is to the hospital or supermarket? I have received several email offers from dealers who are understandably beginning to panic. If the world stops for 3 months there are going to be many who don't survive and Government backed loans mean that businesses who do survive are going to be saddled with debt to repay which will considerably slow down any economic growth. I hope the Government are taking not just medical advice but financial and economic advice too.
