It's not looking good is it, in any sense.

Having refamiliarised with the disaster that's about to be visited on the 4 series, I saw this and it no longer looks so bad. Maybe that has been there plan all along?

If you get hit over the head often and long enough you begin to think it's normal.

It might become an acquired taste but no-one is going to say Wow when they see it at first, except in shock!

Lets Get Grille Done!

Lets Get Grille Done! Just because you get it done doesn't make it a good thing! I reckon the grill department at BMW must have some serious dirt on someone very high up on the Board. Grillgate!

Them grilles are bigger than George Foreman himself...and look remarkably like two of his grills have been simply stuck side-by-side on the front...

I saw the other day that BMW's designer had take to print to defend the new style direction. And of you have to do that, it means you're going down the wrong path. There's edgy design - which people might take a bit of getting used to - and there's just plain fucking ugly. One would hope that BMW board had the courage (after the Bangle era) to be able to spot the difference.

There's edgy design - which people might take a bit of getting used to - and there's just plain fucking ugly. One would hope that BMW board had the courage (after the Bangle era) to be able to spot the difference. I read that too and had the same feelings. There has been a massive negative response to the grill on the new 4 series by current BMW owners and for BMW to keep their head in the sand whilst everyone is shouting "NO" suggests that they are a company which might find themselves with far fewer customers very quickly. BMW had one of the most recognisable and prettiest faces of any car manufacturer up until the point at which they decided to mess with it. It appears they are getting rid of the good and keeping the bad in the design department - a bit like UK planners and architects from the 60's and 70's. I really liked the back end on the 4 series concept coupe and I really hated the front. They kept the front and have "productionised" the rear, removing everything of interest.....and that's from a die hard BMW fan.

Looks like an Audi! In fact, thinking about it, someone should've said that to the designer at the beginning and it might have put them on a different train of thought...

Surely it can't be considered good design if it requires the addition of a numberplate to soften the blow? Those markets where a front plate is optional are going to have a tough decision to make..

Imagine how bad that's going to look in a pale colour with the M Sport Plus pack that gets you the black grille surround!
I can feel prices of late model F30 4 series firming up already.

I saw that photo last week on Facebook and just thought that BMW are trying to do to themselves what others such as Peugeot did after the success of the 205, 405 etc. The nose on the 4 Series might appeal in some markets but in their traditionally strong markets, BMW are really going to struggle to persuade people to buy that face. There is bold design and ugly design - this is firmly in the ugly camp. No thanks.
Messing with a proven formula is a dangerous thing to do when the competition is (in my eyes) much better looking and getting very close, or even just as good, dynamically. It's not as if this is a one off because their grill enlargement has been under way for several years now.

The second photo is a photoshop of the first. It is but apart from the dividing line down the middle, the two look as though they are pretty much identical.

The second photo is a photoshop of the first. I had noticed; someone has mirrored it and filled in the grille (probably someone who works in BMW PR) to suggest what it's going to look like. I suspect it's indicative, I can't image any scenario where this is going to turn out to be a looker.

Don't Photoshop experts usually use it to make stuff look better?

Maybe now that BHP is not a good race, in these green times, have BMW and Audi found something else to have a race about - just who can fit the bigger, ugly more horrible grille to the front of a car?

I hope its a total disaster in terms of sales and they make something similarly-attractive looking like the F32. The thing is, at least from other angles of the undisguised version, the new 4 looks good...except from the front grille!

I showed the pictures to a Merc loving, car enthusiast colleague and he's still chuckling to himself.

I think it will be but in no small part to the collapsing sales of cars like this in favour of SUVs.

Well BMW have already got that scenario covered. How many in their range now?
Speaking of which, I saw an X2 the other day and they're not very tall for a crossover, are they? Probably ony a few inches taller than a 1 series, I reckon.

Probably ony a few inches taller than a 1 series, I reckon. I think they have quite a flat roof that makes them look lower. Anyway looking closely at the 4 series shots I think some enterprising firm could provide an alternative front end, as far as I can tell its all plastic and almost one piece so it could be bolt off, bolt on.
