Looks good though If I'm being unkind it looks more like a countryman then a new defender.
Got my spec which is a 110 S in P300 spec to 55k without going crazy. I know it was never going to be cheap but that's adventurous pricing.

Starts from £40k, so they say in the article, so that's only for people or businesses who can afford the extra £310 VED each year

The pricing may be adventurous but I'm guess there's enough pent up demand to fill all the production slots for the first couple of years.

I’ll spec my Defender later, but looks pretty good on first impression. Not a huge SUV fan as I may have mentioned....but this is different to a hatchback with a slightly higher driving position.

£64,570 going for a 110SE and trying to keep the cost as reasonable as possible. Which is mad, but not as mad as the spec I would want which is the one with the only appealing engine. The P400 110X, a snip at £84,180.
Racing would approve of my Green with tan colour choice.

It's a proper Defender - none of your poncy frippery for the townies.

It's a proper Defender - none of your poncy frippery for the townies. Apart from what looks like £800 of metallic paint and £2,900 for satin protective film. I like it on steelies actually.

Nice to see that all models have a 3500kg tow limit.
I'd be more likely to go for a 90 Commercial but you can't spec those or any 90 yet. So starting with a base 110 200Tdi and being as mean as possible, I got to £48,500 (keeping the steelies). Adding alloy wheels would add £1000-£1500 to that.
But up a spec level to S plus some options and a P300 engine and I easily got to £59k.

Yeah but you'd just order it in a flat colour and get a vinyl wrap done locally if that was your thing. That would be white.
I'll assume they've restricted the colour palette for the launch but the colours available are very dreary and the only colours, is not black, white or silver, look washed out.

I love the steel wheels – they look fab with the big chunky tyres. That’s the look for me – but unfortunately I don’t think the 3.0 six cylinder diesel will be available in the lowest trim level However – I had a look at the X pack trim and the vintage tan leather with the wood looks ace, so I would like posh innards and UN outards.

It looks better than the first release, obviously. I like it.

I like it a lot, but the price makes it very much a townie's plaything rather than a working vehicle. Farmers will continue to buy a Navara or a Ranger and it looks unlikely to make it onto the car list for our sales team. A shame.

We all knew what it looked like pretty much due to the leaks and drip-drip commentary. I do think it is a great update. I'd delete the side plastic window cover things, but apart from that it's hit the spot. Of course I wish it was a lot cheaper, but one has to be realistic. If Merc can charge £100k for a G class, LR would be stupid not to charge £85k for a P400 top of the range. Of course there will be the usual "it's not a Defender" commentary from some quarters, but what did these people expect?
One thing that has not been mentioned much is that it actually is pretty close to the original DC100 from way back in 2011 that got an absolute slating at the time. But then I never saw why the DC100 got that slating - it did look like a modernised Defender.

The steel wheels are far preferable to the optional alloys on the lower level models.

That’s the look for me – but unfortunately I don’t think the 3.0 six cylinder diesel will be available in the lowest trim level According to CarWow there will only be 2 diesels and they are both 2 litres. The 3 litre is going to be a petrol. Hope they are wrong since a 3 litre diesel is exactly the kind of engine a working Defender needs.

Does that suggest they do not intend it to be a working vehicle? Would a 2 litre diesel not be enough? I can still see a role in the military for a vehicle like this especially in the communication roll.

All the engines can tow 3.5t so I don't think it matters so very much. I assume the TD6 will be along at some point. I don't really have a problem with the cost of the utility versions, either. A 4Motion Transporter costs similar money and for a specialist vehicle it's very much on the money.

A 4Motion Transporter costs similar money and for a specialist vehicle it's very much on the money. I have a client who ran a whole variety of 3 litre diesel vehicles almost all of which did towing and off road work. When the VW Amorak came out with the 2 litre twin turbo diesel, they started buying those because they were more economical. After 3 engine failures, they went back to 3 litre diesels. They reckoned the 2 litre got too hot and was under too much stress when towing fully laden trailers, particularly when the going got tough.

Mrs M has commented that it looks very similar to her Yeti....she has a point! I've thought that, too. Similar proportions. For me, I think the new Defender looks ace. As always, there are those crying all over forums about how it isn't a Defender. Well, just carry on buying and running an original Defender then. Clearly an extremely difficult job for JLR to pull off but I love it and I hope it is a huge success. As others have said - for me the basic outside, with a bit of luxury inside. Steelies are non-negotiable, although I'd prefer silver to white. Maybe they should do a County version in brown.

This new Defender has clearly been developed to appeal to the wives of the idiots that feel they need a Defender to drive round Chelsea. Justified idiocy.

There will be a 3.0 diesel, but not until next year.
The only launch 6 is the petrol

It’s part of the structure on the 110, only optional on the 90. It’s interesting that the pictures most of the mags are using are of the basic exterior and luxury interior, a combination that most of us would prefer.

I agree with you entirely. The steelies look great. And "posh innards with UN outards" would be exactly right.
I like this overall. I reserved judgement before, but on balance, I think it is successful. I think a £30k starting price point would have been better though.

The Defender ‘Mark Edition’ You can fiddle around with it, taking it to bits and putting it back together as much as you like.

^ the only one I'd consider owning. It looks like they reinvented the Disco purely so they could rename the old boxy-shaped one Defender. The 90 model looks like a Tonka toy.
Aaannndd... if you want the 6 cylinder engine it'll cost you nearly 80 grand (if I've read the website correctly). Fuck. Right. Off!
