I wonder if he wants a (briefly) shiny 5 year old 320d with 110k miles but a full history. I never expected a modern BMW to rust though.....

The offside rear door fit isn't 100% perfect.

Have fun on the way back. A detour via Harrogate and Edinburgh (IIRC) is a small price to pay for an M5 in my view. ;-)

I hope it has an appropriate number plate, maybe AB19 BMW or JC19 BMW

I hope it has an appropriate number plate, maybe AB19 BMW or JC19 BMW On those grounds surely it should have as close to M5 BMW as possible? The one I saw this morning had 2G. I think M5 owners are a tad more mature about these things than M3, M4, X5 and X6 owners.......

If you can afford a £90k car, you can at least afford £399 to stick a distinctive plate on it !

Perhaps.
I'd probably just ask for a plate that looks local to where I live so as not to look like an out-of-towner or worse an English person!
Don't all Scots plate start with an "S"?

^ All Scottish registered cars have plates starting with "S", if you see what I mean - you could buy a non-Scottish plate but have the car registered in Scotland
EDIT: Same way as all Welsh registered cars have plates starting with C

It doesn't matter, if you look at the Scottish BMW dealers stock of nearly new cars the vast majority of them have a plate beginning YA, B, C, D, or E - I assume they are ex-management cars registered by head office and then passed into the network.
My 320, bought by the first owner from Grassicks in Perth with zero miles, starts with YC

Is there a different import centre for Oop North?
Although I ordered them both from Vines in Guildford (which I think would usually give you a plate starting with "G"), my M135i and 440i were both registered in Portsmouth, being their port of entry - the M135i had a plate starting "HY" for Portsmouth. The 440i went straight on my private plate but otherwise presumably would also have had a plate starting with something between "HK" and "HY".

For Guildford you get either H (for Hampshire) or R (For Reading) My Porsches have had R as I believe that Guildford is part of the Head office group so is registered in Reading. My Missus BMW is H as was her Alfa all ordered in Guildofrd.

Cars registered up here start with an S. Perth and Dundee appear to be SR and ST. Perth has SP as well; Herself's first TD5 was registered in Perth, as was a colleague's Focus. SF tends to be mostly police vehicles, certainly round Glasgow and seen a lot in Embra too. There's an 'unmarked' black Astra with SF plates round my work area, but you can quite easily spot the small blues front & rear if you look.

I already have my own plate which is about 20 years old now and went straight on to the car. I can’t post photos from my phone but I will when I am home. The car is magnificent! The upgraded leather has contrasting black stitching and the dashboard has contrasting light coloured stitching and the whole ambiance is wonderful. The sports exhaust sounds fantastic on start up but when driving normally it fades into the background with just a distant rumble. Open the throttle a bit though and it is aural delight. I have to keep the car below 4.5K for the first 1200 miles so I can’t be too daft but even so it isn’t slow. It is remarkably composed and quiet at 70 and a bit more and it’s easy to see how these cars could cruise all day long at 130+ . I think the colour combination looks brilliant although I know the cream leather won’t be to everyone’s taste. I have dye block to put on when I get home and that should protect it . I reckon the light colour lifts the interior into a different class especially with the black Alcantara headlining which would otherwise make the interior feel very dark. There is always a “but” with any new car and this one’s no different. However this one doesn’t need to be permanent. It’s the tyres - they are Pirelli PZero’s. There is no doubt that these tyres give a harder ride than the Michelin Pilotsport4 shod cars I have previously driven. One of the salesmen who had experience of both tyres agreed with me. Economy is very good. The car had 12 miles on it and was showing 14mpg which was the trip from the holding yard and a short post pdi drive and a visit to the petrol station. Including a trip through MK and all it’s roundabouts it is currently sitting at 34mpg although on the motorway at 70ish it was nearer 29 on the flat, 18 on the inclines and 60+ going downhill. I’m very happy with that. It does attract a bit of attention though from the fast car brigade: I had 2 Golf R’s, a 435D GC an F type and an Evo8 all trying to egg me on to floor it. One of the Golf’s (both black so it wasn’t Martin) was almost in my boot trying to push me on. The car is such a tech fest it is going to take me some time to work it all out but I can say that despite the cost (after £10K contribution from BMW and nearly £20K from the dealer) I am very happy with the car.

Sounds great John! Welcome to the twin turbo V8 club, we’ve got a hat trick on the forum now.
I’m sure you’ll be fine keeping it to 4,500rpm, mine only goes past that when I want full noise and a bigger smile, it’s never necessary and yours has more torque but is only slightly heavier. Will be really interesting to find out how much of the full performance you can use when it’s fully run in.
Full leather makes a huge difference to an interior. BMW aren’t consistent though, full leather on the current 5/M5 is now the same as extended leather on a 7. The tech is very intuitive, but worth reading the manual so you don’t miss anything.
Looking forward to pics.

And regarding public schools - I got a scholarship to Millfield. There were lots of thickies there too, and lots of very good sportspeople on scholarships too (this is one of the things that Millfield is very well-known for). I was the best distance runner in the school, which irked both the kids who'd been brought in on scholarships, and the athletics teachers

Sounds amazing John, I look forward to hearing lots more about it! I remember seeing your plate on your 3-series in 2009, but I'll be damned if I can remember what it is! It's very annoyin too, as I'm usually good with plates; I know racing's, and I've never even seen it in the metal!!

Glad to hear you are pleased! Sounds fantastic. Non-black interiors are the way forward unless perhaps you have small children. Black R wasn't a cop was it? I remember when I had my M5 being badly tailgated by what turned out to be an unmarked police car on the A12. Mercifully some sixth sense warned me.

Sounds like you're going to be very pleased and will be wearing that V8 smile every day.
The good thing about having a real performance car is that you can smile sweetly at race-boy wankers and ignore their games, just enjoying your V8 soundtrack at whatever speed you choose. Then occasionally, just to make a point, blow them into the weeds when totally safe and secure.

Saw a couple of M5s in Newbury today and Dick Lovett in Hungerford had an amazing looking 5 on the forecourt (not sure if it was an M car) in a metallic smoke grey colour that was one of the best paints I've ever seen on a car.
