That's the basis of the sphere of maths as I understand it. Mine was a slightly tetchy post-Xmas Monday morning post - what I mean is that the utility of a large torque and a large power figure vary with speed, in that a high top speed is more dependent upon the latter than the former - and that fits the scenario described.

It's something I've never properly understood as to how the two can differ so much. My old Alpina D3 and an early 2000s Civic Type R have roughly the same BHP of low 200s but the Alpina has over 400lb ft of torque and the Civic has under 200. I've no idea how the maths works on that.

On a separate note, I'm not much of a TGLP'er but I must say that European motorway toll gates do offer lots of scope for gunning it out at max attack. Particularly in France, for which I have the telepeage pass so you don't even need to stop.
The Belgian in the grey 4GC (debadged but presumably a 420d) seemed particularly discomfited as he got comprehensively dusted.

Peak torque is measured per rev as I understand it, and power is effectively torque x rpm. Diesels produce more torque per rev, but fewer revs hence lower power, proportionally-speaking.

Did it get repainted as well?
At higher speeds, aero is at least as important as weight - hatches are less aerodynamic than saloons, generally-speaking. Also as the only person there, and one who has seen how many other fast cars compare, 420 just wouldn't be enough for what I saw.

Some years ago while driving the M5 I got pursued away from a T-junction by an E36 Evo and up to quite near the top of 3rd gear (at which point I eased off) he only dropped back by a few feet so 400BHP vs 320BHP didn't give me any clear advantage at all. I know there are weight variance issues as well but I think these reduce at higher speeds.

Smaller frontal area, too.

A van yesterday. Dual carriageway roundabout, with him in the right lane and nothing else around. Quite why I deserved a blast of the horn and some Neanderthal tailgating when he eventually caught me at traffic I have no idea.

He had the same option and chose not to, so no idea why he got all pissy about it.

That reminds me of an incident last week when we were driving back across France. My wife was driving in the fast lane at about 150kph when she suddenly gasped and swerved sharply into some fortunately free space between the cars travelling the slow lane, giving me quite a fright. A split-second later a black Belgian-registered FF Range Rover shot past at warp speed 9. Apparently it loomed up so fast in the rear view mirror that my wife genuinely feared it simply wasn't going to stop and would slam into the back of us unless she got out of the way. Presumably that was precisely the effect the RR driver intended by such twattish driving.

I had a newish RR Sport trying to frighten me out of the way on the A45 (dual carriageway) this morning when I had nowhere to go Thanks to one lorry overtaking another at 51mph. There was a small risk it was an SVR, but I’ve that before and it’s not been a big issue plus would probably annoy him even more as he’d be sure he could deal with me..... Anyway, full throttle in sport mode and despite a bit of TC slowing me down, it was amazingly easy to pull a large gap. Surprisingly, he didn’t come flying past when I settled back down to cruising speed, just sat a decent distance behind me.

It's been a good few years since I drove long distance in France but the Belgians were, without doubt, the fastest.

I'd forgotten about this one - waiting at lights on a large roundabout the other day, and after the lights went green a Golf GTi flew past from the left - fuck knows how long his lights had been on red. Aaanyway - the next set were on red, and I stopped alongside him. Recumbent driving position of the apelike yoof. Utterly toasted him when the lights changed, and when we got to the next roundabout I was queueing to turn right. His lane was empty so he passed, and Mrs 12th said 'That's not actually a GTi, is it?' It wasn't. No visible 'zorts.

It was the day for semi-modern classics and poor driving. The first was a black Escort RS turbo (immaculate and in what looked like standard spec) which was aggressively moving between lanes on the M5 and also weaving within the lane like an F1 car getting ready for a safety car restart.
The second was a MK2 GTI 16V, also looking fairly standard, but possibly not as it was quite loud….he was weaving behind me when I had nowhere to go which did wind me up a bit. He pulled alongside at a double set of lights, the first went green when the second were still red, so 10mph for a few metres then green and go….I couldn’t resist and the look on his face when he looked over as he pulled alongside at the next set of lights, after a 2.5 tonne diesel truck had easily pulled many car lengths on him despite all the noise his car made, did make me laugh…. How times have changed, I assume it was a decently quick car in its day.
