The opportunity doesn’t come up all that often, but surprising someone in a car they think is particularly fast is the best sport, you don’t even have to be quicker but when a big estate or saloon keeps up and then they slow down to have a look at what it is, it’s pretty amusing. Having said it doesn’t happen often, had two this afternoon. First was a retirement aged chap in a flat cap who was driving his 2018 F Type (V6 S) surprisingly aggressively. As we approached the NSL limit sign coming out of the roadworks on the M6 he was too close and weaving around a bit despite me not having anywhere to go. As we were almost at the sign I was able to move over, so did, then as he accelerated hard I did the same. It wasn’t a decisive ‘victory ‘ but the 750 is a bit quicker. Second was a 2017 335d Estate at the M6 Toll GP, I was quite a bit quicker until I lifted off at 90 leptons and he came flying past. He then slowed down to about 70 and was practically leaning out of his car getting a good look as I wafted past. Mark of the tosser, that... It is indeed. He carrried on behaving in that way including undertaking and forcing himself back into small gaps which just made things worse for everyone.

Had my first TLGP type experience in the 640d today (I don’t really care but typically pull away swiftly). I was at a red light on a dual carriageway near mine tonight and a Range Rover Sport SVR pulled up (swiftly) behind. I love the noise they make and I was interested to see how much faster he was as the 640d has never felt properly fast to me despite a few occasions where it had kept pace with some ‘proper’ sports cars. So when the lights went green I accelerated and immediately pulled into the near side lane expecting him to fly past in a cacophony of exhaust noise. Well, there is no doubt at all he was gaining and closed the initial gap but the rate of gain was smaller than I expected and he barely got his nose alongside before we had to slow for the next lights. Now, it goes without saying that we never went over the limit but had we have done I would guess it would be significantly above the limit and nearing 3 figures before the difference would have been marked. Judging by the way he shot off as I slowed to turn right it felt like he had something to prove. It made me smile and reminded me that despite being a big lump of metal these BMW diesels aren’t too bad at shoving things down the road and the RR driver probably felt less pleased than I...now, a 750 would have been far more fun I’ll almost certainly miss that low down shove if/when I change! I assume that once over the 3 figures point the RR would start to go backwards due to its excessive size and weight being a factor.

First one in the dieselly VRS today. Taken a while to be served up with something that needed to be shown. It was only an E90 320d and my getaway was a little uncouth, with some hefty tyre squeal, but a win is a win, right?
Utterly childish, I know!

I was TGLP’d by a diesel E-Class estate the other day. We were stopped side by side at a light near the Mandarin Oriental in Knightsbridge and when the light turned green, I pulled away reasonably smartly as I usually do. Whereupon muggins in the Merc, to whom I had paid zero attention up until this point suddenly absolutely stamped on the throttle and shot off up the road like he had all the hounds of Hell behind him and vanished off towards and down the Hyde Park Corner underpass. Deeply dangerous in an area full of pedestrians so I just backed off and let him go. Weird behaviour.

I guess city driving and the TLGP really don't go hand in hand. There seems to be a inverse relationship between TLGP likelihood and smallness of diesel engine.

I do take small pleasure at getting the better of people at the lights but generally due to them being on the phone or talking to a passenger. My ex expected me to look at her when speaking to her. My attitude was that as the driver I was focusing on the road environment so too bloody bad for her.

Had a numpty in an old shape Discovery (a 3 or 4, who can tell the difference?) pull up next to me at some lights last night and then jumped them before they changed. I waited for green and then went and still exited the roundabout before 2 tonne Tessy! Easier to tell the difference form the back I find. If it took so little effort to catch it, I'd hazard a guess it was a 3, which only had the 2.7L engine in it.

We got tailgated yesterday by a car that turned out to be full of neds. The driver was doing all the weaving and edging out things things that impatient folk do. At a red traffic light they dived for the right hand lane with the clear intention of burning off this 'slow' campervan. Sadly for them Mrs Tim (who was driving at that point) rose to the challenge and as the lights changed sank the throttle and left them behind in a roar of V6 goodness and a touch of wheelspin! It turned out the high-speed neds were in a Yaris, presumably a 1 litre so it wasn't a fair contest

More power to both her elbow and her right foot.

Some upstart in a faux by four upset them.

Not a TLGP, but I was behind a Tesla Model 3 at some lights today, joining a motorway. Tesla drivers seem to mostly be normal people, but there's clearly a subset who are determined to show the fossil-fuelled dinosaurs where it's at. I think he was the latter, because he set off like a scalded cat. My take of was a bit less full-on, but I was catching him steadily from 2nd onwards. I don't think he expected that. I'm pretty sure it was the one-below-top in the range, as the top spec one is in the mid threes to 60 - this one was a twin motor variant though.

I think I have said before that I regularly see an i3 and a big Tesla who like to put ICE cars in their place - very often in the pain in the arse kind of way!

I think the performance of these electric cars has to be considered against how long and often they need to be charged.

I think if you'd seen the handling of the Tesla P100S that was behind me on the A3 in the summer you'd never ever ever ever use its "performance" in anything other than a dead straight line on a well paved road!

Stopped at the lights at a large roundabout, in the middle lane as it's the only one permitting the exit I take. Nearside lane filled, third lane is for the exit after mine only. It becomes occupied by a young, festive fool in a Mk5 Golf GTi. You can see the lights that govern traffic from the right, so Mr Golf is not so much edging ahead as jumping the lights - he was comfortably clear of them before they showed any inclination to change. But I was ahead within 3-4 car lengths, and when I took my indicated left, I see that he has swerved across behind me and is going straight ahead. And ooh, the glare of unhappiness and hostility (in equal parts).
Childish, but very satisfying.

Not quite a TLGP. I was hassled a bit by a 911 on a a dual carriageway when I was in the outside lane but unable to go any faster due to traffic and certainly wasn't going to pull over into the 20mph slower inside lane and end up stuck there. The intimidation continued for a few miles with the 911 falling back a bit and then racing up to my bumper and sitting a few feet behind before falling back again. Anyway, we got to a roundabout in a 40mph limit which then opens up into a de-restricted dual carriageway (straight ahead) after the roundabout with most of the traffic going either left or right. As I exited the roundabout, the 911 went straight for the outside lane and floored it as I stuck to the inside and did the same. It is safe to say that an M5 can accelerate faster than a C4S. I backed off and let him go when it got silly but I was pulling away albeit slowly up to that point. He disappeared at licence losing speeds and was out of sight after about a mile but the point had been made!

Good for you.
I lost unexpectedly, yesterday. Coming back from swimming, I take a roundabout with enthusiasm and hit the slip road hard, seeing a Seat Cupra type thing trying to keep up but losing some ground. But over the next k or so though, he must have taken 100 metres out of me, probably more. I was taking the next exit so pulled onto the nearside lane and there was no indication of anything unusual about the car (a 14 plate with quad pipes), but it must have been putting out a lot more than it left the factory with.
Can't win them all!

We have a plethora of S3's Golf R's and Seats which fly past the office and quite obviously have way more than their standard 300 ish HP. One white S3 who always lets loose just after the speed camera, regularly spins wheels in the dry, in what I suspect is 2nd and 3rd gears and the acceleration is monstrous - it must be 500hp+ the way it goes.

It doesn’t cost much to get a lot of performance out of that engine, £600-£700 gets the 0-60 down from 4.5 to under 4 seconds. Upping your budget to £2-3k can get that down to 3.1-3.2 seconds

No idea what the 0-60 time is, but I know he's taken it to RWYB meest at Santa Pod and (I think) Crail and done 'alright'.

I don't think it was that dark, and it didn't have the 'tow' sticker. I'd also imagine it's packing more than 420!

You do realise that the two are mathematically-related.

You do realise that the two are mathematically-related. Are you referring to an equation that refers one to the other?
