As always, a test drive might give you a completely different view, but steering and ride seem like they’re right up (down?) there with the X3M. Real shame if true, as I had really high hopes for it.

Eastern BMW have a 6000 mile 68 plate M4 Comp in Champagne Quartz (a nice colour which looks great when shiny but also takes dirt well!). It's up at £42,990 This one: usedcars.bmw.co.uk/vehicle/201812313550205?Bit pricey for the spec if you ask me. Prefer this one - similar age and mileage and ok the colour isn't as interesting but it's got proper full leather, a sunroof, the Icon headlights and a host of other extra FG for slightly less money: usedcars.bmw.co.uk/vehicle/202001166238983?I agree racing. I only posted that because Eastern send me regular updates of cars they are selling and that one caught my eye. The sunroof with a dark interior is a great plus and the full leather dash makes a massive difference. The Icon LED's are fantastic too and a great help to ageing eyes (mine, not youthful Tim's)

I thought the M340i had adaptive suspension as standard. I haven't read EVO either but I wonder if the car was set up for the hardest suspension when in Sport and Sport Plus which seems to be the default for motoring journalists. I have never found a UK road where I thought the harder suspension brought any measurable benefit: with the crap surfaces, odd cambers and undulations, a car with more compliant suspension is always going to feel more at one with the road.

It had adaptive suspension and had to be left in comfort, which apparently isn’t comfortable as the firmer settings are way too hard. Really surprising after the positive reviews the standard car has had.

I love evo , but it isn’t what it used to be , and take some Of their reviews with a pinch of salt these days , especially if written by people like Jordan katsiantis or whatever his name is

Not like EVO to focus on comfort though. I’ve only watched a couple of Joe Achilles videos (not a fan), is he a big BMW fan boy?

He is (hes got a 7 series and m2 comp) I do like his reviews and out of all the ‘youtubers’ he’s about the best

I'd be interested to know what tyres the EVO car was running. Joe Achilles does like his cars on the firmer side but I remember him saying he felt the M4 Competition should just be left in comfort and also the M5 he had, he set it up with comfort for the suspension and Sports Plus for the throttle. Comfort in the M5 is quite acceptable around town and exceptionally comfortable as speed builds.
If EVO are being too critical it's a sad day because between EVO and CAR it was usually possible to get a pretty good idea of what a car really would be like to live with.

I like the recipe of the M340i Touring but it's just a terrible bit of car design. Manages to be both ugly in parts and dull in others.
When production of the 4-series ends, I think the only BMW range left in production that I think is good-looking will be the current 5-series. The rest are all munters to one degree or another.

I received my subscription copy of Car yesterday and had a quick read before bed last night. The one thing that caught my eye was the comment of the BMW design chief who said that they had to be bold and adventurous with their design to stand out. What he is missing entirely is the fact that you can stand out because you are super ugly, people are laughing at you and don't want to go near you or you can stand out because you are so achingly beautiful that they can't keep their eyes off you and they want to be close and have a part of you. There was a letter in the magazine which basically said the same and that the grill on the 4 series concept was an abomination. I can't disagree with the letter at all. BMW had better be careful.

For quite some time bmw have been must have white goods. People bought them because they ARE bmw's. A case in point is the bmw study that found a large percentage of owners thought the 1 series was fwd.

A case in point is the bmw study that found a large percentage of owners thought the 1 series was fwd. Straying into moonboots territory here, but that's an untrue generalisation - or at least no more true than for any other mainstream premium brand. If it was true, they wouldn't win so many group tests. I buy them because they are great cars - if they weren't, I wouldn't. The cars are still generally technologically excellent for their price points and typically more rewarding to drive than models from other mainstream premium brands - they are just unfortunately increasingly ugly. By all accounts, the new M135i is an excellent car which is great to drive. No doubt we'd all love the powertrain had BMW never put a 6-pot in earlier iterations of the 1-series. It is, however, another dull design with fearfully ugly detailing.

I quite liked the new 1 Series when I saw it in the showroom but one turned up here yesterday - an M-Sport in that nice blue they use in the advert - and as it reverse parked there was no getting away from that monstrous grille. It just looks so incongruous. No idea what I was smoking in the showroom.

I quite agree but actually the side-view still image at the top of thread is inoffensive, the problem arises when you can see the front and, to a lesser extent, the back. The black grille on pale cars is particularly offensive.

Yeah, kind of the opposite to when you were out at the nightclubs looking for a woman. When those big lights came on at 2am it could be quite a shock.

I nearly spewed straight up on the pavement: revolting.

My copy of EVO arrived yesterday and I immediately read the test of the M340i. If that tester had been a woman I would say it was the wrong time of the month. He was just in a bad mood and really didn't like it, apart from it being very fast. He didn't like the instruments or the ride, steering or feedback. I hope he is wrong although conversely it actually made me want to go and drive one to find out.

I’ve spent 2 weeks with them and they’re dreadful, that was with HUD which stops the need to look at them. I’m more interested in trying one now as well

What's wrong with the instruments? I certainly don't like the anti clockwise rev counter but from pictures, the rest looks OK. However I do agree with the comments that there is nothing wrong with analogue dials (which can be digital like the M5) and buttons. I certainly wouldn't buy a car that was all touch screen.

I've only seen the instruments in magazines but they look terrible compared with the traditional BMW style of round dials. It's change for the sake of it to my mind and as is so often the case its not an improvement.
Your copy of EVO takes a while to arrive, I think I got mine at the weekend and CAR arrived before that.

They are still on redirect - I am working my way through change of address notifications and fighting with banks and credit card companies. I wrote to one card company to tell them of the change and they have sent me a massive form back wanting all my personal details incl tax reference Nos, names of others in household with dates of birth etc etc etc. My words as I put it in a drawer were f*ck off. I have been a customer for 20 years and have moved house - that's all they need to know.

I spout up about Readly now and then. If you have a tablet it's the way to go. Most of the car mags are on there and it's £7.99 a month. From the top of my head there is
Car evo Autocar Auto Express Top Gear
...but it isn't just car mags...
