A manual, I don't think 'rare' quite covers that adequately.
Can you both stop now!? I've been forbidden from making any more changes until we've moved house.

Stonking value and a lovely colour.
Exactly my point re the Alpina. Although, it should be admitted that the more appropriate comparison is with an M4, which would cost a similar amount if not more.
After all, the B4 has 76bhp more than a 440i and the B4S has fully 108bhp more (which is also more than an M4), with both versions capable of around 190mph and of knocking off 60 in the low 4s as opposed to 5 for a manual 440i.
I'm not so sure a manual 440i is the way forward though. I suspect the auto 'box is the better match and you could only get the manual with the 2dr coupe body - the GC and convertible are both auto-only.

Does the Alpina cope with all that power? I remember John saying the M4 was a handful which wouldn't be welcome on the roads around St Andrews.

Dakota leather in an Alpina is a no-no, surely?

That's decent headlights and a leather dash away from the perfect 3 series.

I think it has the decent headlights?

I think it has the decent headlights? It’s got the basic LEDs. I had them on a 3 series hire car in Spain and they weren’t great / particularly bright, you’d find them quite a step down from Xenons. The way to spot them is the horizontal plastic piece, if it’s up near the top of the unit it’s the basic LEDs, in the middle then it’s the brighter voodoo ones.

That’s weapons-grade spotting! I was caught out because it’s different for the 4-series.

That’s weapons-grade spotting! I was caught out because it’s different for the 4-series. Guilty! Although the knowledge comes from experience rather than general spotting, having had the full fat voodoo LEDs on the 535d and the ‘lite’ versions on a hire car. It’s not clear, if you read the brochure you’ll think the only difference is the adaptive functionality. They’re bi-led, so like bi-xenon, one unit that does both dipped and main beam, the adaptive lights have multiple LEDs. The Golf has standard LEDs, but separate units for dipped and main beam, so are as bright as the decent BMW ones, just without the voodoo technology unfortunately (which is now standard)

Please stop it!! I'm not sure about the lights, they look the same as the ones on the 320 and I'm happy with them, love the sunroof too but it's clearly missing the 'slutty' (according to one of my female colleagues who is one!!) red leather.

The work net nanny won't open that. Maybe that's a good thing?

But it has the upgraded proper leather seats in a colour that isn't difficult to keep clean.

I always think of very pale/white leather as fairly "tart's boudoir"...or is it just not tarty enough!?

Having experienced both, Audi's red is a tartier lipstick shade than BMW's slightly softer coral red in my view.

The TR6 has always been a favourite of mine and I always hankered after one but I don't think I would buy one now.

The TR6 has been a favourite of mine since I saw one parked in the marketplace in Penrith when I was a kid. A neighbour then bought one of the newly launched TR7s and I remember thinking then what a retrograde* step it was.
*obviously I didn't actually think the word "retrograde" as I was eight.

Oh God no! I drove one of those (my wife had one as a company car) and whilst it was OK at the time, it really wasn't a good car - water in the boot and sometimes rear foot well, ice on the inside of the windows, an engine that seemed to promise a lot at first and then just disappointed and suspension that whilst compliant had a habit of fairly terminal understeer in very strange circumstances. Driven at no more than 70% all the time it was just about acceptable. Velour seats were nice to have at the time.

The TR6 has always been a favourite of mine and I always hankered after one but I don't think I would buy one now. I had the pleasure of driving one of these to a classic car show near Edinburgh. I loved it, I had a brand new MX5 at the time and the two cars were both great to drive, the cool factor of the TR6 made it the pick of the two (for the brave). Why wouldn't you want one now John? It would be lovely to cruise around Loch Lomond in one.

I nearly bought an early '90s Merc 320SL lin bright red last time I was there because £4k seemed ridiculously little for a car in such excellent condition, I could imagine cruising round in it for the summer and I was 100% certain that it would make money when the time came to sell.

It would be lovely to cruise around Loch Lomond in one. The only reason is time - I don't have any and I know from friends who have ventured into classics that time and money are both needed in fairly reasonable quantities. I still love the looks and would never tire of the fantastic straight 6 sound but boring as it might sound I would probably go for a Boxster because it is newer.

Are you serious? That generation of Escort and Orion are among the worst cars I have ever driven. Hateful things, built down to a price. The Mk 1 Focus was from another universe compared to these.
