Are you serious? That generation of Escort and Orion are among the worst cars I have ever driven. Hateful things, built down to a price. The Mk 1 Focus was from another universe compared to these. +1 to "are you serious?" I had one as my first company car. A car of its time and not one to be desired now, at all, under any circumstances.

The 75 V6 I understand...the Maestro less so...

Less so! I really don't understand it at all. The only Maestro I had any dealings with was a friend's Dad. His was a 2 litre something (HSE?) which had lots of small niggles and then developed a bad dose of rust spots. I will admit it wasn't a bad looking car but I have no want at all. However I like liquorice but many people hate it - that's what makes us individuals.

The MG Maestro was considered a decent car back in the day. It went well and had very slick gearbox. I got close to buying an ex-demo model once, but then bought a Rover P6 V8 instead!

My mother had a brace of Montego estates (in those days there wasn't much choice in the smartish family estate market) - an F-plate 2.0SLX and a J-reg 2.0D Countryman. She liked the first enough to replace it with another, but the second one was a complete and utter Friday car and she quickly replaced it with a K-reg Volvo 940 estate.

The 75 V6 I understand...the Maestro less so... I had 2 bright red MG Maestros (and a Montego GTI as well). I'm sure they'd feel pretty awful now but I loved them at the time. They never really got a great press but magazine articles could be grudgingly positive, they seemed to think the handling was far superior to the XR3i for example. They tended to rust around the rear wheel arch - there was a lip that was perfect for collecting crud. The 2 litre injected engine (EFI in MG speak) was actually pretty smooth, way better than the carburettored version in the Montego HL my dad had. The white one in the advert actually appears to have decent rear arches but the front and rear spoilers should be the same colour, i.e. either all white or all black. An F reg would be at the changeover point for these becoming colour coded so either its had a replacement front bumper or a new tailgate.

I notice there are no photos of the interior on that "barn find" (more like barn dumped...) MG Maestro. Which probably means it hasn't got one. I also reckon the MG Maestro was underrated. All the press ever went on about was the talking dash.

I imagine the interior will be mouldy. The talking dash got binned - in the MG version - along with the original 1.6 carb fed engine.

W2.1 has finally mooted she could consider a newer car to replace the E46-that-refuses-to-die. She does under 1,000 miles per annum, and as both girls go to school in walking distance those miles are to swimming twice a week, occasionally to Waitrose and maybe to yoga if it's pissing down. She still wants sat-nav, however, in case she gets more adventurous. She refuses to have an M3 no matter how hard I try. This car, whilst leggy, seems to have had every useful option ticked and is the right colour. I hope it's still around after we return in January and I've paid all my taxes. www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201911064093554?fromSavedAds=true&advertising-location=at_cars#db-tab-1

Surprising they didn't spec xenons but hardly a deal breaker. With the mileage you'd add that's a sensible car.

Would you get W2.1 (what happened to W2.0?) plus 2 girls plus a load of swimming stuff into a MINI ?
I presume that auto transmission is a pre-requisite?

I am a huge fan of the MINI, but it might be worth looking at the four door which is on a longer wheelbase, or the Clubman, which is vast and rides more smoothly than the standard models.

They'll fit: none have the seat anywhere near pushed back and one sits in the front - she's 1.4m (4'7") tall at 8 years old and doesn't need any booster in the UK (still needs in in SK). That said I need to get them all to sit in one for prudence. Yes: must be auto and this 1.5 3-cyl engine (ie an S3 (F56 I think)) We had a Countryman a couple of years ago for summer hire and it was great but she says it's too big for the knockabout car.

Fairy nuff. The 1.5 triple is a super engine. It will cruise at illegal speeds without hesitation and ours returns 45 MPG messing about on the school run and short commute.

Now that is rather lovely. I picked up an old Fast Lane a few months back and read the comparison of the V^ and the Twin Spark and if memory serves the TS was picked over the V6 as the pick of the range. I'd still have the V6 however.

The Twin Spark was preferred due to the lighter engine making the turn-in sharper.
The earlier 2.5 V6 version of the engine was sweeter revving but having driven both I'd still take the 3.0. I test drove a Twin Spark as well but was a little disappointed by its performance.

I always thought the bodykit on those 75s looked a bit aftermarket and not particularly well incorporated into its design.

The worst ones that Alfa did were the homologation ones with a very similar bodykit but attached to a 1.8 turbo engined 75 that had small, narrow wheels. It was rather like the Mk2 Fiesta Populars that had the full XR2 bodykit minus the wheels.
Otherwise I don't think the bodykit on that 3 litre was any worse than various Zender equipped cars or the Treser Audis.

I really do like those. I think it'd have to be red for me, though. Is that price typical or are 4 star classics still taking the piss?
