I would love to extend my existing garage, but I doubt planners would approve as it is right on the edge of the village green and the cost would be astronomical, plus it would look too big. Anyway, it arrived first thing this morning.

I agree a second garage is useful but leaves little funds for the contents! Must be room to store a TVR undercover in yours? Distance aside, obviously.

What about a car port - it'd give partial cover at least.

I can’t remember the layout of your place but is the garage built into a hill? Would you be able to build behind it?

That gives you options then. I’m tempted to build one but I think one of the neighbours might come onto the market next year which creates other opportunities.

Chassis is painted. Prepped with degreaser and washed off with soapy water and rinsed. Left to dry for a couple of days and then coated in Buzzweld Galv in One. Very happy with the finish. That can cure for a few days before I build up the suspension and axles.

View from the front now it’s safe to open the garage door. I dragged the axles out of my mates shed and put them in the garage. They have been doused with Plusgas ready for disassembly. I’m going to wash them off before wire wheeling them with the grinder and painting them with Buzzweld Chassis in One. They are going to need new swivels as the chrome is pitted and they are leaking. They currently have freewheel hubs and I’m going to ditch those in favour of standard drive flanges as they are less of a PITA. I tried to to remove the steering relay from the old chassis, but I need to rig a frame to hold the old chassis while I jack the relay and beat it out. I also need the fuel tank and that will be plenty to be going on with.

There is but it would be better with a Landy chassis underneath to cope with the scaffolding on the drive and about 20t of MOT1 so there isn't a 1ft drop from the garage to the ground!!

I like the placement of the obligatory tea mug. In true British Leyland fashion, is this to be inserted into one of the doors as the car is built, to rattle around and cause aggravation ?? (although I suspect that there isn't much hiding space in a Landy door)

No door cards in a Series and I suspect the rattle from a cup will be the least of my worries!

Got the front axle stripped down today. I’m leaving the final drive in place as there’s is no play in it.
The halfshafts both sides look very new and the play is coming from the freewheel hubs which is good news. Brake wise, the drums are fucked and the relatively new looking shoes are contaminated. New shoes and drums needed, but the wheel cylinders look new so I won’t change those and all of the adjusters are good. The swivels are done for - the chrome is peeling so I will replace those. The Railko bush on the driver’s side was very swollen and tight. All the bushes and bearings come with the kit.
I’m not happy with the corrosion on the half shaft bearings, so it’s getting a couple of those.
I’ve ordered all the stuff including brakes and drums for the rear axle which I’ve yet to strip. Hopefully it won’t need half shafts. I’ve ordered new drive members as they are less than £10 so I’ll see if that removes the free play.
Once the rear axle is stripped, I’ll wire wheel the tubes and paint them before mating them to the new springs and get them installed out of the way. It will be easier to install the new swivels and seals with the tubes attached to the chassis.

Ref your garage issue there's an interesting atricle in the Christmas edition of Autocar about getting a shipping container installed.
£2k + VAT for a brand new 20 foot one apparently and no need for any form of planning permission.

Yeah I think that's what it said. Plenty room for a TVR though shirley?

Whether they need planning permission is dependent where you put one - especially in an AONB.
I would have one for storage for the quad and mower down at the yard but condensation can be an issue with them for car storage. I wouldn’t have one next to the house. The TVR is fine outside under a cover. Once the Series is done in the spring (with any luck) it will go back in the garage and the Series will live out.

Getting fed up of moving parts about the garage....... How can that be when you remind us so frequently (in your signature line) that you are "living the dream" ? (unless the dream is really a nightmare)

I’ve been pretty busy. Front axle is painted and installed. New axle seals and swivel balls installed. I can’t finish the rest of the front end off as I’m waiting for a BSF tap and die kit. The only seized bolts were the lock stops and these need to be drilled out and retapped before installing the outer swivel housing. I have installed the studs into the outer housings with loctite. Some of them came out on disassembly. Once the housing is installed, the stub axle and brake back plate can be installed and the hubs built up from there. I started the strip down of the rear axle which isn’t as bad as it looks. Most of the brown stuff is clay rather than rust. It needs a pinion seal as this is leaking badly. There was very little oil in the axle. The halfshafts are getting replaced. I’m not happy with the free play in the axle. I have new drive flanges and tried them on the shafts, but there is still a lot of play. No big deal, they are £20 each. I omitted to order enough bolts so have ordered some more to reattach the stub axles to the main axle tube along with gaskets. All the backing plates are salvageable and I have the brake refurb kit to sort those out too. Once I get both axles installed so I am happy, I will have a rolling chassis. 😀 Shouldn’t be long. Then I can install the brake pipes, steering relay (if I ever get it removed from the old chassis) before getting the engine and bulkhead installed.
